The Diploma in Library and Information Science is a 24-unit program composed of eight courses that offers theoretical and practical applications of librarianship in the field. This program aimed to train and prepare non-LIS majors to harness knowledge and skills in different types of information community. This program also covers technical aspects of librarianship, reference service skills, collection management as well as integration of technology to varied types of services in the library.
As a post-baccalaureate course, it is designed for graduates of any courses who currently works in the library and wants to gain background knowledge and skills of librarianship. As a culmination of this program, students are required to undergo apprenticeship in the library to apply their gained knowledge and skills needed in the library.
The DLIS curriculum consists of 24 units of LIS Introductory courses.
Graduates of the program are expected to be able to:
· Effectively plan, organize, develop, implement and evaluate library and human resources to anticipate future educational and organizational changes.
· Identify user’s needs and wants through reference interviews, survey and other feedback mechanism in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the library services and other practices
· Select, evaluate, organize and disseminate print, multimedia, electronic and digital resources
· Exemplify innovativeness and resourcefulness in organizing and providing services and resources in the library and its clients.
· Demonstrate knowledge and skills in applying and handling of information tools and technologies which lead in developing and utilizing appropriate technology solutions.
· Conduct research projects that will assist the improvement of the library organization.
TARGET CLIENTS
· Paraprofessionals – professionals who are working in the library as library staff but are not library and information science graduates. The program will give them basic knowledge on library services and collection management.
· Library Custodian – teachers who were designated as library custodian by the principal or school director. The program will equip them with the necessary skills needed to practice librarianship as well as proper supervision of the library.
· Information specialist – professionals working in different information centers, such as archives, museums, databanks, etc. The program will train them on the appropriate management of different collections which includes organization of information sources, collection development, indexing and abstracting.
