Department of English

P.N. Das College was established on 20th August, 1962 and was affiliated to University of Calcutta.

Pass (Presently General) Course of the English Department started with the establishment of this College. B.A. Honours course was introduced on14th July, 2003. Presently, the department offers 4 Year Multidisciplinary Programmes (Honours / Major / Minor) along with a host of Skill and Ability Enhancement Courses under the NEP UCCF.


The vision of the Department:

Our vision is to develop the department as a seat of academic excellence through a series of quality programmes that enhance the literary sensibilities, communicative skills and critical thinking of its students. The department also envisions to churn out a set of students deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of the state and the nation, while acquiring technological competence and knowledge of world literatures and cultures to become global citizens.


The mission of the Department: 

To offer advanced, career-oriented UG programmes imparting professional knowledge, employability and life skills, as well as fostering strong ethical values.

● To promote rational thought, inquisition and an argumentative bent of mind through literary, theoretical and linguistic teaching.

● To employ technology based pedagogies, interdisciplinary approaches, and project based learning toward building strong foundation of literary sensibilities and linguistic competence.

● To promote cultural awareness, diversity and social responsibility through the study of  English literature, literatures in translation, language and rhetoric.

●   To offer opportunities for studying diverse literature, aesthetics and cultures, in a multicultural environment.

●   To contribute to students' academic development, knowledge, and critical thought.

●   To encourage and guide students toward successful careers in education at all levels, like research, professional writing and editing, publishing.

● To develop distinctive personalities equipped with knowledge and ideas to be conscious of issues like democracy, environmental and gender sensitivity, class and caste issues, ethnic, linguistic and geographical diversities.

●   To develop a set of inspiring and courageous young minds who are sympathetic towards the suffering of fellow citizens,

●  To offer unique opportunities for digital literacy and updated ICT skills through the study of language and literature. 

●  To open up learning and research opportunities in key areas, like Interdisciplinary Studies, New literatures in English, Technology in Language and Literature Teaching, Modern and Postmodern Literatures, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Translation Studies, Sociolinguistics and Film Studies.

●  To organize Training Courses/Workshops for life skills, soft skills and digital skills.

●  To collaborate with other institutions to interact in academic discussions and teaching.

From the partition of Bengal this area witnessed sudden demographic growth. Incidentally a large number of inhabitants belonged to backward classes of the society. Vast agricultural fields, water bodies and a drainage canal - all in combination then meant Santinagar.

Many of the students of the Department are First Generation Learners and from socio-economically backward Classes.
