Molly Rule

Columbus Children's Choir, Columbus, Ohio

Molly McCorkle Rule received her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and Music Education and Master of Music in Music Education with Kodály emphasis from Capital University, where she was a section leader and soloist with the Chapel Choir. She completed a portion of her Master’s degree at The Kodály Institute in Hungary. Growing up in central Ohio, she was part of all-state choirs, bands, and a trombonist with the Columbus Youth Symphony. Molly spent the last several years teaching at The Ohio State University School of Music. She currently directs the Pinta Choir in the Columbus Children’s Choir program and teaches preschool music classes in an under-resourced neighborhood in Columbus. She also hosts and narrates the Link Up concerts and Young People’s concerts for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. She began her teaching career with early childhood music classes for WeJoySing and also in Pickerington at Fairfield Elementary, where she was chosen Teacher of the Year for 2004-2005. Molly is very excited to be back in Pickerington to conduct this festival!

Dr. Chivington

Otterbein University, Director of Music Education

Dr. Chivington is a graduate of Otterbein University and earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Music Education from The Ohio State University. Professor Chivington is the Director of Music Education in the Department of Music at Otterbein University where she teaches courses such as Music Education Practicum and Vocal and Choral Methods. Dr. Chivington founded Kinderchor at Otterbein University, a community children's choir formerly in residence for 20 years at Otterbein University. Dr. Chivington serves as Music Director at Indian Run United Methodist Church. She is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, the Ohio Music Education Association, and the American Choral Directors Association. She has published articles in the Choral Journal, Music Educators Journal, and the Triad.

Julia Shaw

The Ohio State University, Assistant Professor, Music Education

Julia Shaw holds a PhD in music education from Northwestern University, a master of music in choral conducting from Butler University, and a bachelor of music education with high distinction from Indiana University. Her teaching experience includes ten years working in diverse school and non-profit settings in Indianapolis and Chicago. Dr. Shaw was honored as Teacher of the Year for the Zionsville Community Schools and Boone County in 2007. She has worked extensively with children's choirs, including the Chicago Children's Choir, Indianapolis Children's Choir, and the Indiana University Children's Choir.


Dr. Shaw’s areas of scholarly interest include child and adolescent vocal development, culturally diverse learners, music teacher education, urban education, and socio-cultural issues in music education. Recently, she received the Society for Research in Music Education’s Research Grant to investigate effective professional development experiences for urban music educators. She has presented sessions for state and national conferences of the National Association for Music Education and the Organization of American Kodály Educators. She serves on the editorial committee of Music Educators Journal, a journal in which her work has been published.


An active choral clinician, Dr. Shaw is frequently called upon as a guest conductor for All-State and honor choirs. She is also a certified Kodály educator and has taught in the summer Kodály institutes of DePaul University, James Madison University, and the University of Central Missouri. She has also taught in the summer graduate program of the University of St. Thomas.
