Object Name: Block and Tackle
Object ID: 95.656
Date: 1800-1850
Description: This wooden block has a double sheave, iron bands and a hook with wooden wheels. Block and tackles are used in conjunction with ropes, cables and pulleys to increase pulling force in order to change the direction of ship sails. This block is similar to the types that were used on 17th-century merchant sea vessels and on Mayflower II in 1957. Modern versions of the block are still used on Mayflower II today.
