4/2/2026 - Banquet Info and MORE
Congrats to those competing at OHWay States. The guys got some good mat time and had a fine showing.
Quick reminder! The Pleasant Athletic Boosters Spring Gala is 4/17. Tickets are still available and can be purchased HERE.
Some of these wonderful wrestlers have yet to turn in their wrestling gear. Parents... please check in with your child and see if this has been done. Thanks in advance!
The PHS wrestling banquet is Sunday, April 12th at 6:30pm at the high school. We generally put on quite a production and it takes time to get awards & put together video for the event. Thank you for your patience. We will take the time to honor our wrestlers and others who helped make the season a success. The event will start in the cafeteria and then finish in the theater area.
In order to contribute to the event, please bring the following:
Freshman - chips / pretzels / or desert
Sophomores - side dish
Juniors - beverages
Seniors - main dish
** I recommend networking with each other on what is being brought. You can also reach me at 740-225-9044 on the topic. The Robinson family will be bringing my wife's famed pizza casserole along with plates, napkins, etc.
It will be great to see everyone again. Please reach out to me with any questions.
ps - Those of you who have not turned in your wrestling gear... Wrestlers... if you do not turn your stuff in the only thing you will get at the banquet is kind words, a firm handshake, and a notebook piece of paper that says "good job". I may use crayon.
3/18/2026 - Quick Info
Hi there. See below for some quick info.
Uniform turn in.
Please bring all singlets and warmups (jacket and shorts) to school with you and drop it off in my classroom. I will be in the wrestling room after school as well. Some of you have as many as four singlets and 2 warmups. Have these items in a bag with your name on it. Some of you have turned in stuff already after the first request.
There has been interest in having an NCAA Wrestling Tournament watch party. We have done this for several years now and will do so again on Saturday, March 21st at 6:30pm. We are gonna do this at the school in the theater. I will let you know if these plans need to be altered in any way. Please bring $5 to help with pizza cost. Athletes may bring additional food items if desired. Games such as Kan Jam can be played. I will be asking for a head count at some point. NOTE: Athletes can turn in gear at this time as well.
Please see the previous post on the OHWAY Tournament on 3/28 and let me know if you have questions. We have some guys signing up.
The current plan is to have the banquet on Sunday, April 12th at 6:30pm. This allows time for awards, video, and additional planning. It also keeps us away from spring break and Easter. There will be quite a bit more details on the banquet as we get closer. We had a great season. There's a lot to celebrate and many to honor.
OHSAA State Tourney
Our wrestlers killed it at the musical.
3/10/2026 - Districts + Odds & Ends
It seems like only yesterday that season started. I was talking about things like parent meetings and picture day. The end of the season is upon us.
Our 8 district participants represented Sparty well with numerous wins. After some excellent victories and close losses, we emerged with 2 district placers! Congrats to Chase and Greyson on earning spots on the district podium. Additionally, Chase will head to the Schott and weigh in as a state alternate. Fingers crossed.
Practices are continuing this week for anyone wanting some extra mat time for next year. I know many are now knee deep in spring sports. Chase needs some dance partners. We will be in the room on Tuesday and Thursday after school. Practice will be at Elgin along with Delaware Hayes on Wednesday 3:45. Please let me know if you want to come in.
Here's a few odds & ends.
I would like to start collection of uniforms, singlets, etc. There's a ton to collect. Most guys have multiple singlets along with both old and new warmups. To make this as easy as possible for athletes, turn in can be either at school in my classroom or after school in the wrestling room. PLEASE have items in a bag with name in or on it. I will be in the room after school Tuesday - Thursday. Then all of next week. Find me at school or at the room.
I will be sending out information about a banquet in the coming weeks. It will be after spring break. We put on a good show for the banquet and need time for awards, video, etc. There's much to celebrate.
Also on the horizon is our annual NCAA Wrestling Championships watch party. This would take place March 21st. More details later.
Some of the guys are considering wrestling in the OHWAY state tournament on 3/28 at the Marion Fairgrounds Colosseum. Information about the event can be found HERE. There will be additional efforts to get guys on the mats + strength training through the off season.
This was quite a year. Tournaments were won. Medals were earned. The guys wrestled a ton of matches. Our seniors were able to compete at a high level and go out in style. Of our 35 athletes, 24 were underclassmen. The future is bright. Reach out with any needs. Enjoy your evening.
3/1/2026 - Sectionals Aftermath & Heading to Districts
Hello all. Here's a post for the week.
The boys battled hard at Ridgedale Saturday, earning 4th place as a team and advancing 7 guys to districts + 2 additional alternates. We are taking a pretty large group to Coshocton!
HERE is the spectator info posted on Baum's Page for the district tournament.
Team check-in starts at 10:30am and weighins are 11am. Qualifiers and alternates will depart from the school by 8:15am to arrive comfortably. Wrestling begins at 1pm. There will be 4 rounds wrestled on Friday.
After Friday's wrestling and weighouts, we will have a team meal. This cost will be covered.
As previous mentioned, the guys are staying at the Spark by Hilton. 200 Morris Crossing Ave, Newcomerstown, Ohio, 43832 Friday night. They have a continental breakfast. Wrestling begins at 9am Saturday.
Here's our practice schedule for district week.
Monday - after school standard time. We will assess our own health and add some guys in to create a good workout.
Tuesday - combined practice at RV w/ Harding. This will begin at 3:15pm.
Wednesday - combined practice at Marysville along with other teams starting at 3:30. We will leave together after school.
Thursday - practice after school until 4pm. Athletes can stay longer as needed and come back in the evening for weight checks.
That is all. I will post updates through the week as needed. Don't be shy if you need anything. Additionally, be on the lookout for information on a season banquet. There's much to celebrate.
2/22/2026 - Post MOAC Tourney & Sectional Week!
Hello everyone. I hope this message finds you well and maybe a bit rested. I can't believe we have reached this point in the season. Here's a post to get us through the week.
All things considered... the guys wrestled well yesterday. In a week that we could not get healthy, there was much to be proud of. Congrats to all of our placers at BOTH the MOAC Tournament and Marysville JV Finale. Despite being short handed, it was still a great time to be a Spartan.
The OHSAA Sectional tournament is this Saturday at Ridgedale High School. This is a varsity only tournament. Historically, I have always kept my jv and varsity B athletes up to sectionals to keep high energy in the room. With us having skin problems along with some illness, I am going to offer a release to my spring sports athletes on Tuesday. This will thin out the room a bit and maybe optimize our chances to enter the weekend at 100% while also giving guys a smoother transition to the spring season. I would like to have all of our guys Monday (tomorrow) to bookend their season. Those who would like to remain with the team and practice through sectionals to get better are welcome to do so. Please let me know if anyone has questions on this.
Sectional weighins are at 8am at Ridgedale. We will depart by 7am so we can arrive and check weight on site early. Wrestling begins at 10am. Those not wrestling in the event are very welcome to come in support. It is always an exciting day. Tickets can be bought with cash or online HERE.
Those qualifying for districts will compete at Coshocton High School the following weekend. I have hotel rooms reserved in advance at the Spark by Hilton. 200 Morris Crossing Ave, Newcomerstown, Ohio, 43832
** That is all. I will offer further information in the near future on districts, banquet, etc. Thank you everyone for your hard work, support, and fellowship. I am proud to be part of this wrestling community.
2/18/2026 - League Week!
Greetings. Here's a post for the week. I apologize that it hasn't been released sooner. Things have been rather hectic.
The team had a great time at Cooper's Bowl on Sunday. Thanks to all for the experience. It's nice to get everyone together away from the grind of the sport. These guys are a lot of fun. If you have not yet seen the highlight video, it can be found HERE.
We are knee deep in our very competitive "MOAC Challenge". After war ball, baseball, relays, knee football, Kan Jam, and puzzles (?!) the team race is tight. We have a few more competitions to go before champions are crowned.
We have two events this Saturday. The varsity and JV will be heading opposite directions.
Our varisty will be going to the MOAC Tournament at Ontario High School. Wrestling begins at 10am. I have us scheduled to depart at 6:45am to make it comfortably prior to 8am weighins. Tickets can be purchased with cash on site or online HERE.
With exception of those dealing with injury, sickness, etc, those not competing at Ontario should be ready to wrestle at the Marysville JV Finale. I will get as many as I can into the tourney. The Finale begins at 10am with an 8am weighin. The bus will depart by 7am.
** I will make rosters clear to athletes through the week. We are a bit banged up as we head into MOAC. Efforts are being made to field a competitive squad this weekend while also looking ahead to the Ridgedale sectional next weekend.
This is a very exciting time of the season. PLEASE let me know how I can assist athletes / families.
2/8/2026 - Onward We Go!
Hello everyone. I hope you have enjoyed your Sunday thus far. Here's a post detailing the week. Forgive me... It has some length to it. :)
St. Charles was an extremely productive tourney for our athletes. The guys worked hard and did some nice things against a mix of competition. It was great to get some on the mat who have not had as many opportunities. We have proven that with time these fellas can really developing. Wrestling is a process. Our team is young. Eventually they won't be young anymore!
We have a slow week (for once). As we head into the stretch run, I tend to pump the brakes to maximize health. Still... we will amp up the training and add some extra stuff to keep focus and maybe even provide some entertainment value.
**For starters, I need to announce a change on our schedule. The Marysville JV Finale is NOT this weekend. It is Saturday, 2/21 on the same date of our MOAC tournament at Ontario. We will divide and conquer. I apologize for the schedule error. It is 100% my fault and I take ownership. I was looking at corresponding weekend from last season instead of distance from sectionals.
Without a competition this weekend, we will have a relatively standard week of practice... but add some razzle dazzle. Here's the breakdown.
Monday - standard practice after school
Tuesday - standard practice after school (no youth wrestling due to conferences)
Wednesday - practice after school until 5pm. I am adding some extra time to allow for the MOAC Challenge draft. This is our annual fun yet fierce team competition. It takes the form of a bunch of games and contests in the lead-up to league and sectionals.
Thursday - standard practice after school. Youth wrestling begins at 6pm for younger grades and then 7:20 for older. Athletes are welcome to help. Especially those who have not be involved in it much this season.
Friday - standard practice after school
**This Saturday, we will have a practice at 10am. I am looking to create a competitive environment with alums or even a small scrimmage. Stay tuned.
**Each year as part of our MOAC Challenge team competition, I like to take the team to Cooper's Bowl for some shenanigans. This is still in the planning stages, but I am looking at Sunday, 2/15 at 1pm. I will confirm once I talk communicate with players and coaches.
**Lastly, our varsity sectional tournament will be at Ridgedale on 2/28. Those qualifying for districts will compete at Coshocton High School the following weekend. I have hotel rooms reserved in advance at the Spark by Hilton in Newcomerstown.
200 Morris Crossing Ave, Newcomerstown, Ohio, 43832
** I will lay out details as we draw closer to the league and post season. Please reach out with any questions. I am happy to help.
2/6/2026 - St. Charles Info + Misc
Hello. Here's some zero hour info / reminders about tomorrow's St. Charles Nye Memorial Tournament.
This is a varsity tournament. BUT it was also advertised to me that a bunch of teams bring varsity B / JV guys. Regardless, the guys work hard each week and need opportunities. I am glad to get these guys extra time on the mat.
The event begins at 9am at St. Charles Preparatory School. With 7am weighins, we will need to depart bonkers early ay 6am. Please be early if you are concerned about your weight. Those NOT wrestling in the event may attend but are not mandated to do so. There will be no practice so athletes are encouraged to find a cardio workout on their own.
As of about an hour ago, the weigh in is scratch +3. Those who have certified get an extra pound. For example, weight class 120 is now 123.
Coming into next week, we will begin the stretch run into the final act of the season. Another JV event followed by the league tourney. It is the most exciting time of the season!!
PLEASE reach out if you have any questions. Additionally, athletes let me know if you need to check your weight.
See you in the morning! Have a great night.
2/1/2026 - Post Sally, Senior Night, and Schedule Addition
Good afternoon. I hope everyone is having a restful Sunday. This post is lengthy so settle in. :)
Words cannot express my level of appreciation to all who helped make our home tourney a success. To parents... THANK YOU for all the sweat & sacrifice in helping run the hospitality room. I heard nothing but praise about your efforts. Extra thanks to Megan Hibar for running point on the effort. AND to all who helped with setup and teardown of the event. We have a special group. I love seeing so many people willing to support their kids by helping the program. THANK YOU coaches for performance and dependability though the weekend. I get to work with great people. Additional thank you to David Little for design work with tee shirts, award brackets, and other stuff I may be forgetting in addition to his coaching dependability. THANK YOU to Gerald Smith for giving back to the program by serving as tournament director. He works tirelessly and makes me look much better than I am. To athletes... THANK YOU for your hard work during the weekend. We have some work to do as we lean into the final act of the season, but I was never worried about the level of focus and work ethic from the guys.
For those with interest in tournament tee shirts, the order form can be accessed HERE.
Coming off of a laborious weekend, we are presented with a busy week.
This Wednesday is the county duals with Elgin, RV, and Harding. This event is at PHS and also serves as our senior night. We have a special group to recognize. We will get things started at 5:30 and celebrate seniors after the first round of duals.
As mentioned in a previous posting, I have added an event to our schedule. This Saturday, some of the boys will be wrestling at the Nye Memorial Tournament at St. Charles High School. Wrestling begins at 9am and weighins are at 7am. We will need to depart by 6am from the room. With so many athletes on the team, it is important they get opportunities to compete. Due to setbacks with sickness, skin, etc some have missed previous events. That is the rationale for adding this to our schedule. It will be for some varsity and some JV. We may have a few wrestleoffs, but I will mostly be setting this lineup. Again... I want to get guys opportunities. Some varsity starters will NOT be able to compete in this one due to limited schedule points. The boys will be informed of participation status through the week.
Here's a breakdown for the week.
Monday - standard practice after school
Tuesday - standard practice after school
Wednesday - athletes need to be at the room by 3:30 to grab their stuff. We will begin setting up the gym by 3:45ish dependent on basketball practices. I will be at the room after school if there's anyone staying after.
Thursday - standard practice after school
Friday - after school practice until 4pm
That is all... Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.
1/27/2026 - Update
Hi there.
Things continue to be wildly unpredictable this week. We have not had school or practice and are already called off for tomorrow.
It is my hope that we can at least put together a small practice tomorrow. I will not know what we are allowed to do until sometime after 12 noon. If we are to practice it would be at 3pm or later. IF WE CANNOT... It is important that athletes find workouts on their own. You can do quite a bit with a treadmill, bike, stance & motion, burpees, etc. Be disciplined and focused. This is an important week.
The absence of practice creates a time crunch. Wrestleoffs will either be drastically abbreviated or non existent. I will get as many into the tourney as possible.
Speaking of the tournament... as far as I am concerned we are full steam ahead. I will not cancel it. That decision would have to come from above me.
Thursday is still earmarked for Sally setup. We will do this after practice (hopefully). This will include spotlight, mat movement, risers, chairs, etc. I will do whatever I can on my own but will need help with heavy lifting. We can also use this time to start putting things in my room for hospitality. Athletes can use the wrestling room for cardio and weight checking through the evening as well.
I will have a scale in the school on Friday during the day for weight checking.
Please let me know if there's challenges I am overlooking. There's nothing I won't do for the Sally. This is our crown jewel and important to all of us. Reach out to me as needed.
1/25/2026 - Centerburg, Snow, the Sally, and SNOW
Hello all. Here's a post for the week. Things are quite unpredictable.
After a tough semis round and some close losses, the boys bounced back and did good things at the Centerburg Invite. We had quite a few placers and 3 champs. Just as importantly, we entered 21 athletes into the tourney and got tons of time on the mat.
This Friday & Saturday is our Sally George Invitational. Wrestling begins 4pm on Friday with a 2pm weighin. We will have an evening weighout and then begin 10am Saturday with 9am skin checks. It is my intent to enter a "B Team" into the Sally in addition to our regular starting lineup. The guys will be informed through the week.
We take great pride in our tournament. Everything from flow of brackets (special thanks to my man Gerald Smith), loads of design work (Coach Little), production value, hospitality room, and more. Things are shaping up for a great event. Don't forget the hospitaility room link from Megan Hibar HERE. There's a second page on the signup that includes not only food item donations but also shifts to work the room.
Now... the weather. The snow has created a great deal of unpredictability for the week ahead. The guys will need to be on point with focus and discipline. School, practices, and events have already been canceled for Monday. Those in the starting lineup and close on weight need to get a workout in and watch food portions where necessary. Desired wrestleoffs for A and B lineup will have to start Tuesday and conclude Wednesday as needed.
Here's a breakdown for the week.
Monday - school, events, and practices canceled. Try and get a workout in on your own.
Tuesday - standard practice (hopefully) after school. Youth wrestling at 6pm and 7:20pm.
Wednesday - practice after school until 5pm. If wrestleoffs are concluded we may finish earlier.
Thursday - practice after school until 4pm. We will then set up for the Sally. I will keep the guys for the heavy lifting mostly - mats, podium, stage, etc. I should be able to get them home between 5:30 and 6pm.
That is all for now. I will most certainly have more information coming for the week as we go. Athletes, parents, and coaches... Please know you are all appreciated. It is an exciting time to be a Spartan wrestler.
1/18/2026 - Mid January! NU, Centerburg Tourney and MORE
Hello everyone. Happy Sunday. Here's a post for the week.
The North Union Invitational was a very productive tournament for us. Varsity and numerous JV athletes got tons of mat time. Many experienced success along with some productive defeats. Our camaraderie and culture was on full display for everyone. Thanks to all for a great Saturday.
**We will have a full week of practice this week.
Monday (tomorrow) - practice at 10am
Tuesday - standard after school practice then youth wrestling at 6pm
Wednesday - practice after school until 5pm along with some wrestleoffs
Thursday - standard after school practice with possible remaining wrestleoffs.
Friday - after school practice until 4pm
**This Saturday is the Centerburg Invitational. This is a new tournament for us. Wrestling begins at 9am. With weighins being at 7am, we will need to depart by 6am. This is bonkers early so please be disciplined and get some sleep. This is a varsity tournament BUT I am told that I can get some extras in to fill out brackets. I will let athletes know as the week progresses.
**The Sally George Invite is two weeks away! Things will get super busy. Parents please refer to THIS LINK from Megan Hibar on how you can help with the hospitality room for the event. In addition to stocking the hospitality room, we also need help staffing it. It is great to have a rotation of sorts with everyone so parents can watch their athlete.
** Don't forget about the apparel store. The ordering link can be found HERE. The first batch and second batch has already arrived.
That is all for now. Have a great evening.
1/11/2026 - North Union and Misc
Good evening. After two full days of matches, I hope everyone was able to find time to rest. Here's a post for the week.
**The guys wrestled well at the Ron Thomas Invitational. I am so thankful for the help and support from athletes, coaches, and parents. We have a special group. Congrats to all of our placers.
**We have a chance to put together a productive week of practice and assemble a relatively complete group.
Here's a schedule for the week.
Monday - standard after school practice
Tuesday - standard practice time. Youth wrestling starts at 6pm for those able to help.
Wednesday - practice 3-5:30pm. I need extra time for any needed wrestleoffs.
Thursday - standard after school practice. Youth wrestling starts at 6pm for those able to help.
Friday - practice after school until 4pm
Jim Blevins at The Image Bar has our photos online and available. These turned out great. Please consider purchasing. Jim has always supported the program. Team and individual photos are HERE.
There's a strong possibility that we will be adding an event on Saturday, Feb. 7th at St. Charles. This would be for those with points remaining on their schedule whether JV or varsity. With the numbers we have, it is important that athletes get opportunities.
This Saturday is the North Union Invitational. At press time I have not been sent information about this year's event but it generally begins at 9am with 7am weighins. We will therefore leave the school by 6:30am. It is my intent to enter some extras into this tourney. The guys will be well informed of this.
Our Sally George Invitational is a few weeks away. A great many parents already have the ball rolling on hospitality room help, outside donations, etc. I am so very thankful. Let me know if you want info on how to get involved. We take great pride in this tournament and put on quite a show.
That is all for now. Reach out with any questions.
1/4/2026 - Powering Our Way into January
Hello everyone. I cannot believe that we find ourselves in January already. The season is moving along quickly.
I would like to thank parents, athletes, and coaches for making the Larry Holman JV Invite a success. It takes a village to make this stuff happen. Everyone stepped up! I am very grateful to be surrounded by so many supportive people.
Things settle down just a bit this week. Here's some news and notes.
Practices will be standard time this week.
Wrestleoffs will be Tuesday and then Wednesday as needed. Athletes will need to declare intentions sometime tomorrow so matches can be set up. Athletes need to manage weight throughout the week. There will be added emphasis on following a descent schedule to maximize performance.
There's youth wrestling Tuesday evening. Athletes are always encouraged to help out.
Please stay vigilant with any possible skin infection. In talking with other coaches through the weekend, it seems other programs are experiencing frustration with this as well.
Don't forget about the apparel store. The ordering link can be found HERE. The first batch has already arrived.
This Friday and Saturday is the Jonathan Alder Ron Thomas Invitational. This is a varsity bracketed tournament. I am told that there may be opportunity to additional wrestlers to be entered. We will know more about that through the week. The event is being held at Jonathan Alder High School (9200 St Route 42 South in Plain City OH). We will depart as a team by 2pm from the wrestling room. Weighins for day 1 begin at 3:30pm. Wrestling begins at 5:30pm. Saturday competition begins at 9am. We will need to leave by 7am to arrive in time for skin checks. Tickets for the event can be ordered HERE. Cash is also accepted. Those NOT competing are welcome to travel with the team and attend the event but are not mandated to do so. There will be a practice Saturday morning for those not in the tourney.
Jim Blevins took team and individual pictures of the guys in the room on Friday. A link will be available in a day or two in case anyone wants to order. Jim at The Image Bar is a super talented guy and very supportive of the wrestling program.
That is all! Have a great start to the week!
12/31/2025 - Classic Aftermath & Our JV Invite
Hello everyone. Here's one more post for 2025.
** Thanks to all for navigating through our busy Harding Classic weekend. It was a busy and laborious tournament.
** We were unable to practice this morning due to the level one snow emergency. While I was hoping to get a short workout in before holiday, having a little break is ok. Time to heal up and rid the room of lingering sickness. A few have asked about getting into the room for a bit on New Year's Day. I will send something out if there's opportunity.
The PHS Larry Holman JV Invitational is this Saturday. There's work to be done.
Our next scheduled practice is this Friday morning at 10am. This is an important one as well get back into a groove and settle JV guys into weight classes. After practice we will begin setup for the JV tourney over in the gym. This process shouldn't be bad so long as everyone buys in and gets involved.
I will communicate with athletes over sportsYou on the topic of entry into the JV invite. Most everyone who did not wrestle at Harding should expect to wrestle Saturday.
Those who do NOT compete in the JV invite will practice 8-9:30am. Varsity athletes will then stay and help with the tournament.
We will have a hospitality room for workers, officials, and coaches in my classroom. Reminder... Our very own Megan Hibar has created a signup for this. Click HERE. She has left her contact info on there as well as needed. We already have others stepping up. Our wrestling community is amazing! I will help in providing resources and network with others for help as well. THANK YOU to all in advance for your continued willingness to serve the program. We are truly blessed.
Looking ahead to next week, we will work hard in preparation for the Ron Thomas Invitational. Varsity athletes need to focus up on weight management. We will have a round of wrestleoffs starting Tuesday, 1/6.
Don't forget about the apparel store. The ordering link can be found HERE.
That is all for now. Quit reading this and enjoy your holiday. I will see you all in 2026!
12/27/2025 - Apparel Store, Classic, and MORE
Greetings wrestlers and families. I have some odds & ends + reminders for you.
The apparel store is up and running. It was posted to the program FB page yesterday. Batch one orders need to be placed by midnight Sunday night and will be delivered on Jan 7th. The ordering link can be found HERE. Special thanks to our own Coach Little for all the design work.
Varsity starters for the Classic need to be at the wrestling room tomorrow (Sunday) and ready to go by 1:30pm for a brief practice. The workout will be light for some and a bit more intense for others. Those not in the lineup for the Classic are very welcome to attend if desired.
The Harding Classic is a two day event starting Monday, 12/29 at 11am. We will depart via bus by 8am to arrive for team check-in and weighins. I will be there much earlier than that for people checking weight and such. The plan is to take all athletes (whether wrestling in the event or not) to the Classic on day 1. All need to wear the team warmup. On Tuesday, wrestling begins at 10am. We will leave via bus by 8am to arrive for skin checks. The finals for the Classic are estimated to begin at 5pm. Those not wrestling in the event are welcome to attend on day two but it will not be mandatory. There will be a JV practice though at 9-10:30am.
The boys will have a quick workout New Year's Eve 9-10:30am and nothing on New Year's Day.
The PHS Larry Holman JV Invitational is Jan 3rd. We will set up for the event the night before as soon as all basketball practices are finished. As previously mentioned, Megan Hibar has a sign up link HERE for volunteer efforts to provide for and also staff the hospitality room located in my classroom during the event. We will do the same (at a larger scale) for the Sally.
Our skin situation seems much better. BUT we now have some sickness. Please be wary of symptoms (fever and such) and keep me informed so we don't further spread it around the room. We aren't the only team dealing with this. It is all over the place.
That is all I believe. Please reach out with any further need of additional support.
12/22/2025 - Just a Few Things
Hi everyone. Here's just a few things as we enter the holidays.
The PHS Larry Holman JV Invitational is Saturday, 1/3. We will need all hands on deck. Any and all volunteer efforts are deeply appreciated. Megan Hibar has prepared a sign up link HERE. There's plenty of opportunities to sign up for drinks, breakfast items, etc. Please consider helping out. You may reach out to Mrs. Hibar or me with any questions. This is usually a tune up for the Sally. At Pleasant, we take great pride our home events.
Additionally Megan has been snapping pictures of our early events. See the links below.
The JV guys did some good work at River Valley. We had a ton of athletes get tons of matches. There's a lot of work to do as we finish December and roll into January. With our need to stay in shape, keep weight under control, and continue our skill progression, we don't get to slow down much.
We will practice tomorrow at 10am. Some guys are coming in early. Please be ready for a great practice. Our Christmas Eve practice begins at 8am Wednesday.
Please read the previous post for run down of Harding Classic. I will likely shoot more info out shortly after Christmas.
That is all! I am thankful each day for the people we have as part of the wrestling program. Reach out if you need anything.
12/18/2025 - Holidays and Misc.
Hello all! Here's a quick post to update and clarify the calendar over the holidays.
Practice on Friday will be a 3pm start time. The athletes do not have school BUT teachers do. Practice will likely finish by 4:45.
Saturday's practice will be 10am. We will hopefully have some guests in the room to work with the guys.
On Sunday, I am gonna open the room at 1pm for anyone needing to come in and train. With the RV JV Invitational being the next day, some guys may need to come in and keep their weight under control.
The River Valley JV Invitational is Monday, 12/22. Most of the guys who have not wrestled both varsity events will compete at RV. As previously mentioned, the event begins at 9am with 8am skin checks. Athletes will need to report to the wrestling room by 7am. I will be handling satelite weighins just prior to our departure at 7:20am. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online HERE.
Those NOT competing in the RV JV Invite will practice 9-10:30am. These athletes are then welcome to go to the tourney in support of their JV comrades.
On 12/23 we will practice at 10am. This is different from the original calendar.
The 12/24 Christmas Eve practice will start at 8am with PJs and our gift exchange. This has become a bit of a tradition. Athletes need to use THIS LINK to draw a random name if they have not yet already. Let me know if you do not wish to take part in the exchange.
Practice will be 10am on both 12/26 and 12/27. With the Harding Classic starting on a Monday, I will have the room open Sunday, 12/28 at 1pm for optional training. I can then have the room open later towards evening for a weight check as needed.
The Harding Classic is a two day event starting Monday, 12/29 at 11am. We will depart via bus by 8am to arrive for weighins. I plan to take all athletes (whether wrestling in the event or not) to the Classic on day 1. On Tuesday, wrestling begins at 10am. We will leave via bus by 8am to arrive for skin checks. The finals for the Classic are estimated to begin at 5pm. Those not wrestling in the event are welcome to attend on day two but it will not be mandatory. There will be a JV practice though at 9am.
After the Harding Classic there will be a few practices just prior to our own Larry Holman JV Invitational at PHS. There will be much more information about this as it gets closer.
LASTLY... We have been having trouble with skin infection in the room. The majority of the problem seems to be impetigo (a bacterial infection) on ears and / or harlines. This could be caused by a number of factors. Some we can control and some we cannot. PLEASE make sure athletes are vigorously cleaning using antibacterial soap. I have a ton of it in the wrestling room. Additionally, I have been preaching the need to clean headgear, towels, etc. With 35 athletes and limited space (and hot water) for showering, I have opened up the opportunity for athletes to shower at home. To be clear, I still recommend that the guys shower on site. However, if an athlete is going straight home and has quick and easy access to a hot shower, I am open to that option. Skin issues happen in all sports. Certainly with wrestling. Some years we have quite a few issues. Some years we have next to none. With the size of our team and modest sized facility, it has been tough this year. Please do everything you can on your end. I will remain vigilant with my own efforts. If you are in need of a skin form, it can be found HERE or in the practice room. Hopefully we are completely rid of the infections soon so we can focus exclusively on maximizing the potential of our athletes! This is a great group of guys and thus far a joy to coach.
** If you have need for more info please reach out. I am thankful for our wrestling community and am happy to serve however I can.
12/14/2025 - Tourney Aftermath + Odds & Ends
The guys wrestled hard and earned a 1st place finish at the Bucyrus Invitational. The event was incredibly frustrating at times, but the boys picked up a ton of mat time and earned some nice wins. Thank you all for the support. The team earned high praise for team camaraderie and culture from other programs. I continue to be proud to serve this program.
We are off to a nice start! There's need to stay focused. The schedule gets tougher from here.
We will get back to work this week. I am making a few changes in order to maximize usage of coaches. Here's a breakdown.
Monday - practice 3-5pm
Tuesday - practice 2:30-4:30
Wednesday - practice 3-5pm
Thursday - practice 2:30-4pm
Friday - Athletes do not have school this Friday but I do. I need practice to begin at 3pm that day.
We have youth wrestling 2x this week on Tuesday and Thursday. It is always nice when our high schoolers give back by coming to help.
Athletes please keep your foot on the gas as it pertains to academics. This is the final week of the grading period.
As is tradition, we are doing a secret Santa gift exchange for the holidays. The exchange will take place at our early morning 8am Christmas Eve pj practice with a limit of $25. Athletes need to use THIS LINK to draw a random name.
We have a 10am practice this Saturday but no event. We now turn our attention to our junior varsity wrestlers for our next event. The River Valley JV Invitational is Monday, 12/22. The tourney begins at 9am. We will do a home school weigh in. I will hold a brief optional workout this Sunday prior for those needing to keep their weight down.
Our home tournaments are fast approaching. The Larry Holman JV Invitational is Jan 3rd and Sally George Invitational is Jan 30-31. I will need some volunteer help with our hospitality room for both events. Please let me know how I can help.
Lastly, we will have a Pleasant wrestling apparel sale starting relatively soon. Look for ordering info in the near future.
That's all. Thanks for everything. Let me know if you have questions.
12/8/2025 - A Productive Weekend!
The varsity won the Van Buren Duals with a 5-0 record. Everyone got mat time. Great job to all!
The junior varsity wrestled admirably at the Northmor JV Invite. Several wrestlers wrestled 4-5 matches. Many of the guys wrestled their first matches ever.
We cannot be content. the schedule gets much tougher from here.
This Saturday is the Bucyrus Invitational. The event is held at Bucyrus High School 900 West Perry Street–Bucyrus, OH 44820. It begins at 10am. We will need to depart by 7am to arrive comfortably prior to 8am weighins. This is a varsity event BUT I will make efforts to get others some varsity B matches. At press time my intention is to bring those not wrestling to the event as well. Our younger inexperienced athletes can learn by watching and being part of things.
Wrestleoffs will take place tomorrow. Wrestlers need to let me know if they intend on challenging for position. Those who did not talk to me at practice can message me on sportsYou.
We have youth wrestling tomorrow night. Anyone is welcome to come and help out.
The end of the grading period is middle of next week. PLEASE make sure you are meticulous with your academics.
Thank you parents for your support and flexibility up to this point. This is a good group. There's nothing easy about being a wrestling parent. Please reach out if you have any questions.
12/4/2025 - Odds & Ends
REMINDER - We split up on Saturday.
The varsity will head to The Black Knight Duals at Van Buren High School. Departure is 6:15am and wrestling begins at 10am.
The Northmor "Meat & Potatoes" JV Invite begins at 10am. Departure is 7am.
** After a few days of wrestle-offs, the guys now know where they are headed this weekend. Again... we do not split like this often.
NOTE - For athletes headed to Northmor... There is a bus available for drop off but we are on our own to get home. The guys were given a consent form today at the end of practice allowing me to take home athletes who are not being signed out by parents at the end of the tourney. They can ONLY be signed out by parents. In case they lost it, I am attaching the form HERE. This is ONLY for those headed to Northmor.
I have been pushing several of the guys pretty hard on academics. Both at school and in the wrestling room. Some were sent home today with a copy of grades and instruction to talk with teachers. Let me know if you need me to further supplement any efforts made at home to help them be better student athletes.
We have had some skin issues but seem to be getting on the other side of it. Please continue efforts to emphasize good hygiene habits. The carpets in front of the room have been removed so I can have better control on keeping all floors clean prior to every practice. The guys have been told that street shoes are not to be worn in the bathroom, entryway and certainly not the wrestling room. With no carpet, the floor can be rather slick after showers. Wrestlers are welcome to use shower shoes so long as they stay at the room.
Don't forget... This Sunday is the winter sports meet the team. The concession stands will be opened up. There will be dessert silent auctions and a few raffle baskets. A game of The Queen of Spartans will take place AND there will be a 3-pointer buy in game. Each of the guys will get introduced. Good times shall be had. Doors will open at 6PM with Meet the Team starting at 7pm. I want the guys there by 6:30.
The guys have worked hard to get to this point. I look forward to showing them off. Please let me know if you have questions.
12/1/2025 - A Wild Week + Start of Competition
Hello everyone. This post will detail the wild and crazy week in front of us. There's much to cover.
The boys wrestled rather well at our scrimmage. I was proud of how hard they worked. Even our guys with limited experience. We got out of it what we came for.
As previously posted, picture day for wrestling and a few other sports is tomorrow at 3pm in the gymnasium. The order form for pics is not currently available in physical form at the school. I am told copies will be available tomorrow. I am attaching a digital version HERE so you have an idea of options. Additionally, prints can be ordered HERE. Senior banner pics will take place just after team pictures.
On Monday (tomorrow), boys will meet at the wrestling room as per usual right after school. Singlets and warmups will be handed out. The guys can go ahead and get prepped for pics as well. We will head back to the school by 3 dressed and ready to go. NOTE: Standard singlets and warmups are being handed out for the school sports pics tomorrow. When our new singlets and warmups arrive we will likely do another team shot in the wrestling room. Since pics will likely take awhile, I am extending practice until 5:30pm. Please let me know if this creates issues.
Wrestleoffs for our first competition will be during practice Tuesday and (if needed) Wednesday. A certified official will be used for this one. We always have a ton of matches for the opening season wrestleoffs. Please arrange for practice to extend to 5pm on these days. This will allow more time to finish the matches AND achieve sufficient practice time.
There's youth wrestling Tuesday night 6-7:10pm and then 7:20-8:30pm for older kids. The guys are always welcome to come and help.
The wrestlers divide and conquer this weekend. We have a jv event AND a varsity event. This is the only time we split during the season.
The varsity will head to The Black Knight Duals at Van Buren High School - 217 South Main St, Van Buren, Ohio 45889. Wrestling begins at 10am. We will wrestle 5 duals. In order to arrive comfortably for our 8am weigh in, we will need to depart from the school by 6:15am. This is rather early. Get plenty of sleep.
Anyone not going with the varsity to Van Buren will be going to the Northmor "Meat & Potatoes" JV Invite at 7819 State Route 19 Galion, Ohio 44833. Wrestling begins at 10am. We will depart at 7am to arrive for weighins. I will enter as many of our athletes as possible. It is always my intention to get our jvs and varsity B athletes on the mat as much as I can.
LASTLY... This Sunday is the winter sports meet the team. The "Chili Dinner" portion of the event has been canceled due to lack of interest. Instead, the concession stands will be opened up. There will be dessert silent auctions and a few raffle baskets. A game of The Queen of Spartans will take place AND there will be a 3-pointer buy in game. Kids can shoot a 3 pointer for $1. If they make it they get $2 back. If they miss, the money stays in the pot. Doors will open at 6PM with Meet the Team starting at 7pm.
That's a lot of info to take in. Please reach out with questions. Thank you for all you do!
11/23/2025 - Alphas, Turkeys, and Misc.
Greetings! I hope everyone has had a great weekend. Here's some important info as we head into Thanksgiving and alpha assessments.
Congrats to Greyson and Chase on representing our team at the Central District All-Star Meet.
Practice this week will be standard on Monday and Tuesday. It is important to have excellent workouts as we head into Alpha assessments. I am available to open the room ANYTIME dependent on the needs of our athletes.
Alphas are this Wednesday morning 7:30am at Jonathan Alder.
We have two opportunities for alphas. It is up to athletes and where they are with weight as far as which one they choose. The first one is 11/26 (prior to Thanksgiving) and the second is 12/3 at Delaware Hayes. It is likely that most will be assessing on 11/26. I am including that form HERE. There is also an alpha profile sheet HERE. I will provide hard copies at practice as well. Again... those who do not alpha on 11/26 will need to do it on December 3rd.
Alphas is an assessment used to determine a wrestler's lowest allowable weight during the season. It also provides a safe timeframe for athletes to achieve that minimum weight. Alpha results are established through hydration testing along with percentage of body fat (skin fold calipers). While I do not mandate that wrestlers cut weight, it is important that they take alphas seriously to allow for weight class flexibility during the season. In other words, they have options if they later decide they want to move to another weight class. Athletes may only lose 1.5% of their body fat per week when moving to optimum weight. It is recommended that athletes avoid caffeinated beverages and vitamin or mineral supplements at least 2 days prior to testing. These could affect level of hydration for the test. It is also recommended that athletes be awake 3 hours prior to testing. I will talk to the boys at practice on best practice routine for the morning of alphas.
** I would like athletes to report to the wrestling room by 5:45am Wednesday morning. Those close on weight can sweat a bit (although this is not ideal). Others will do a very brief light technique session on top position. We will depart as a team via bus for JA by 6:40am to get there comfortably. Alphas should not take all that long. Athletes will have a chance to refuel a bit. We will then scrimmage with JA and a few other schools.
**After the scrimmage we will clean up and then head to Der Dutchman for a team meal. The cost of this will be covered. I look for us to return to the school by around 1pm. I will have the guys reach out if that time changes.
This time of year is very important. Guys are trying to get in shape while achieving optimal weight for alphas. For some, this is the toughest part of the season. Coaches are trying to keep the fellas working hard while also keeping them sharp mentally.
** There will be no practice on Thanksgiving. Please enjoy time with friends and family. We will practice on Friday at 10am. Our Marysville scrimmage is Saturday at 8am. This will be a 2 hour live wrestling practice with other schools. We will need to depart by 6:45am to arrive and get warmed up.
Whew! That is all... PLEASE let me know if there are questions. I am happy to serve.
11/17/2025 - Off and Running
Hello all! I hope everyone had a great weekend. Here's some odds and ends as we enter the first full week of practice.
The team is off to an excellent start. We have loads of young and motivated wrestlers led by a great group of seniors. The freshman and newcomers thus far are fitting right in to the program culture. This is a very tough and physically demanding sport. There's much to look forward to. Especially as the guys get into shape and gel together.
We have a full week of practice this week. Reminders...
The boys must have an updated physical to practice. If you are unsure of physical status contact the school and / or access Final Forms.
We have a very new schedule this season. It can be accessed on this website along with a calendar for practices and other events.
Needed forms such as physical, drug testing, alphas, and more can be found on the Links and Forms page.
Youth wrestling registration for grades 1-6 is Monday & Tuesday night 6:45-8pm in the hs wrestling room. HERE is the registration form in case anyone is asking.
REMINDER - The parent meeting is this Tuesday in room 100 of the secondary building. I would like to move the time back to 5:15pm instead of 5:30. This will help out the football athletes and parents who have a banquet at 6:30. I will talk about expectations, communication, some handbook items, and alpha assessments.
Picture day is Dec 1st at 3pm. This day will also be used for senior banners. I will have forms available for athletes.
That is all for now. If you have need for additional info I can be reached through SportsYou. Parents are also welcome to reach me at 740-225-9044. Thanks and see you soon.
11/11/2025 - 1st Practice + A Few Items of Importance
Hello everyone! The time is now. Tomorrow is our first official practice of the season. This is not optional. Please be prompt after school. I will be clear on standard operation procedure. Practice on Saturday practice begins at 10am. Be ready to start by 10am. We will finish at 11:45am followed by a somewhat brief team meeting. Athletes should be ready for pickup by 12:30 dependent on how long it takes for them to shower up. Don't forget... the parent meeting is Tuesday at 5:30 in my classroom (room 100 at the secondary building).

Currently, both our middle and high school rosters are tracking to be around 30 athletes each. PHS now has a girls program! Additionally, many have been asking about youth wrestling registration. Wrestling is the greatest sport in the world and it is a great time to be a wrestler at Pleasant.
I have recently finished the season calendar. It has all practices and events. There's also a season schedule posted. Each week, I generally post announcements that offer specific details. Particularly on tournament start times, weighins, departure, etc. You will be well informed.

8/15 - The Slam is Here!
The Spartan Slam is tomorrow (8/16). With almost 50 teams and more than 50 raffle prizes, this has the chance to be our biggest event yet.
Wrestlers... I would like as many of you as possible to have a presence at the event. All of these efforts are being made to benefit the program that you are part of. While I do not necessarily need wrestlers there for the entire duration (6 hours), I would very much like each of you to be there at least half of it. More is better.
You may certainly stay longer. It is generally a very fun day. At the event, there won't be a ton of work needing to be done. Perhaps helping with the raffle, tee shirts, and / or handing out golf prizes. BUT MOSTLY... I need you to walk around, be kind, be friendly, and be thankful. Some of you are playing in the event. That is absolutely fine. Enjoy time with your family and friends. Certainly be willing to help out when asked. PLEASE wear a Pleasant tee shirt (preferably WRESTLING) so you stand out.
I think that is all for now. I look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow!! Please feel free to reach out if there are questions. Thank you.
8/12 - Slam Tickets Update pt 3
Hello all. The event is fast approaching! We have quite a few teams already and many more will be added. Our raffle is loaded.
*Special thanks to Coach Little for his artwork for the event.
I will be available at the school for $ and ticket collection.

I will collect money for raffle and teams. You may also pick up more tickets as needed. Let me know if you need more than one team. I can establish general tee times. Raffle tickets will also be sold at the event. Reminder... Those purchasing tickets for the raffle do not need to be present to win.
8/6 - Slam Tickets Update pt 2
Hello again! The tickets have arrived.
TOMORROW (8/7) - I will be in my classroom (Room 100) from 7:45am-10am for the purpose of handing out fundraiser stuff. Drug testing is tomorrow as well. In case you are in need of the DT registration form, I am including it HERE.
Friday - I will be in my classroom (Rm 100) 9-11am and then again 4:30-6pm with tickets.
Saturday - I will be in the wrestling room 10-11:30am
Sunday - Open mats 1:30-2:45pm.
** I will establish times next week for turn in of tickets and $.
Reminder! Athletes will get 25 raffle tickets ($1 each) and 1 team ticket for $50. Many have already expressed that they want more than 25. That is no problem at all. You are also welcome to enter more than one team.
You are welcome to see the previous post as needed for details. This is a popular event. There's much to look forward to. Please reach out with any questions.
8/5 - Slam Tickets Update
Good evening!
I have to call a bit of an audible for ticket distribution for the Slam. Our event tickets are still in production. We will have open mats tomorrow 10-11:15am BUT tickets will not be available until Thursday.
Thursday - distribution window will be either morning or evening dependent on arrival of tickets. This will be communicated as soon as possible.
Friday - I will be in my classroom (Rm 100) 9-11am and then again 4:30-6pm with tickets. Football wrestlers can pick up tickets and info after lifting or prior to scrimmage.
Saturday - I will be in the wrestling room 10-11:30am
Sunday - Open mats 1:30-2:45pm. Tickets can be picked up at that time as well.
Reminder! Athletes will get 25 raffle tickets ($1 each) and 1 team ticket for $50. Many have already expressed that they want more than 25. That is no problem at all. You are also welcome to enter more than one team. I have well over 15 teams already entered and didn't break a sweat :)
You are welcome to see the previous post as needed for details. This is a popular event. There's much to look forward to. Please reach out with any questions.
7/28 - Spartan Slam + Odds & Ends
Hi everyone. I hope you have all found some rest & relaxation this summer. Strap in... There's quite a bit of info here.
It is almost time for the Spartan Slam fundraiser. As most of you already know, this year's event will take place on August 16th. Again hosted at Paradise Park.
This event will be a putt-putt golf team competition along with a raffle to make money for our program.
This is our 6th annual event. The fundraiser has been great over the years and really has evolved into not just a great day for the program but also the Spartan community. We continue to be ambitious from a fundraising standpoint.
This year, we expect to again be a quality team with loads of participants engaged in a rock solid schedule. This not only requires funds for tourney entry, but also travel, and potential overnight stay at a hotel, plus occasional team meals. There are other typical expenditures such as workout and cleaning supplies, awards etc. Additionally, I have in mind to pursue new warmups + singlets. It is ALWAYS a goal for me to keep financial burden minimal for families.
We are asking Wrestlers & Parents for their assistance in multiple ways:
Selling Team Entry Tickets – We will be selling entry tickets for participant teams; one team of 4 players for $50. The teams will need to present their purchased ticket at the event to play and receive a commemorative Spartan Slam ball. The team with the lowest total score (18 holes) will win $250 and second place will get $100. Third place will be awarded team entry fee back.
Selling Raffle Tickets – We will be selling raffle tickets to help generate some extra funds in addition to the Putt-Putt event. Raffle winners will not be required to participate in the event nor be present to win. The cost per ticket will be $1.
Volunteering – Of course, when August 16th rolls around, we will need helping hands. At the event, we will need help for raffle, taking tickets & logging team scores. As much as possible, I would like the wrestlers there being visible, kind, and thankful. I am aware football players will likely have practice commitments that morning. I will certainly work with this.
Thus far, we have a tremendous showing for hole sponsors. Well over 25 and likely approaching 40. Thanks so much for the help we have already received. We are still in the process of gathering items to use for the raffle. Much like last year, we will hope to have some items of high value along with smaller items such as car washes, gift cards, tumblers, etc. If any of you have ideas / suggestions for raffle items please let me know. I am bad at turning down help.
Each wrestler is expected (PLEASE) to sell at least 25 raffle tickets and at least one team entry. Athletes are allowed to enter a team if desired. Raffle tickets cost $1 each and team entry of 4 competitors comes at a cost of $50. This stuff sells VERY easily. If you need more tickets simply let me know. PLEASE make the effort. These efforts are being made for the program to which YOU belong.
I am asking that wrestlers come and pick up tickets for sale. Please stop by during one or more of the following windows of time. 3pm times are set up for the convenience of football players wanting to simply swing by prior to practice.
Wednesday 8/6 10, 10-11am (open mats) or at 3pm at the wrestling room.
Thursday 8/7 3pm at the wrestling room.
Sunday, 8/10 1:30-3pm at the wrestling room.
I am giving wrestlers loads of opportunities to meet up for tickets. But please let me know if none of these windows work, I will happily drop tickets off to your house. I will begin collection of tickets and stubs as the event approaches. Probably a few days prior. Those with questions are certainly welcome to reach me at 740-225-9044.
Additionally (and unrelated) I am transitioning us to a new platform for communication this season. I have always used REMIND. The school would like all athletic programs to use SportsYou. I am including a link for detailed instructions HERE. For those already well versed in with this app, the code is HBHZ-9U76. I will use both REMIND and SportsYou until we have fully transitioned.
We have had some athletes in for open mats both at our place and some over at Elgin & RV. Please let me know if there's a time others want in the room to train. I will do my best to accommodate.
By all means let me know if you have questions. I am happy to serve.
7/3 - Pleasant Youth Wrestling Camp
This camp is important. It furthers the continued quality of the program and helps raise funds at the same time. If you cannot make sessions for any reason, please reach out to me so I can plan.
There will be no open mats this Wednesday due to the camp. We will resume open mats Sunday in addition to mat time available at RV and Elgin. If you need the room at a different time for workouts, let me know.
That is all. I look forward to seeing everyone. Have a great day.
4/30 - Need Some Volunteers
Hello everyone.
I am in need of some volunteer help on Saturday, 5/3 from 2:45-4pm. Our recently purchased practice room mat is being reconditioned (at no cost) due to some issues discovered on the competition side. The company is coming with a semi to pick up the mat. I need help rolling it and moving it a short distance to the semi.
The mat will be away for reconditioning for 6-8 weeks. Therefore a lightweight mat will need to be moved to the room as well. This will not take long.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
4/7 - Banquet Reminder + Open Workouts
Hello everyone. Don't forget! The PHS wrestling banquet is Sunday, April 13th. See the previous post for details. Let me know if you have questions.
Some area programs are combining efforts to offer open mats to our athletes. Here's a rundown of each week for the remainder of the school year.
Sunday: 1-2:15pm at Pleasant
Monday:
Tuesday: 3:15-4:15pm at River Valley
Wednesday: 4-5:15pm at Bucyrus
Thursday: 3:15-4:15pm at River Valley
Friday: 3:30-4:45pm at Elgin
I am knee deep in softball coaching... BUT still very willing to help these guys pursue off season training opportunities. This can be discussed more at the banquet as well.
Have a great remainder of your day! I look forward to seeing everyone at the banquet.
3/27 - Banquet Announcement
The PHS wrestling banquet is Sunday, April 13th at 6:30pm at the high school. I apologize for the delay. We generally put on quite a production and it takes time to get awards and put together videos for the event.
Please reach out to me with any questions.
ps - Those of you who have not turned in your wrestling gear... bring it to me asap. Otherwise the only thing you will get at the banquet is kind words, a firm handshake, and a notebook piece of paper that says "good job".
3/9 - State Aftermath & MORE
Hello everyone.
I want to thank all who made the state tournament weekend a success. Whether competing, coaching, or simply there in support... thanks very much.
Congrats to our OHSAA State Tournament participants Ayden O'Dell and Sean Murphy. Both represented the program well!
**What a season it was! We have much to celebrate. Look for info on a banquet in the near future. Likely to take place just after spring break.
**I will be busy cleaning the room and putting things away. PLEASE help by bringing in your gear.
Uniform turn in.
Please bring all singlets and warmup (jacket and pants) to school with you and drop it off in my classroom. Some of you have as many as four singlets. Have these items in a bag with your name on it. This makes things quite a bit easier on me. For those who do not attend at the high school, I will be in the wrestling room after school until 3:45 on Monday and Tuesday.
There has been interest in having an NCAA Tournament watch party in the wrestling room. We did this last season. We will do this again on Saturday, March 22nd at 6:30pm. I will let you know if these plans need to be altered in any way. Please bring $5 to help with pizza cost. Athletes may bring additional food items if desired.
Again... Banquet info will be forthcoming. As per usual, we will celebrate the season in style. Let me know if any of you have questions. Thanks very much.
2/23 - Postseason! Districts are HERE
Hello to all. Here's a post for the week.
The guys put together a solid performance at sectionals as we finished 4th out of 29 teams. Congrats to all participants. Additional praise to our district qualifiers Ayden O'Dell, Sean Murphy, Greyson Haycook, and Sam Mentzer along with alternate Keagan Fogle.
Districts are this Friday and Saturday in Troy, OH at Hobart Arena. The address is 255 Adams St. Troy, OH 45373.
Team check in at the arena is Friday at 12 noon. Weighins begin at 1pm. Participants and alternate will depart from school by 9:30am to arrive comfortably. There will be an overnight stay at the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Troy + a meal Friday night covered out of the wrestling fund.
Please check out THIS LINK for complete details on the event including ticket information and tournament timeline.
Here's the practice plan for the week. Remember... practice is NOT mandatory for non qualifiers as many are now transitioning to spring sports. However - those wishing to come in for additional work (head start for next season) and / or helping qualifiers are very welcome to come.
Monday & Tuesday - after school technique until 3:30. We will then use coach transportation to head out to Elgin for practice along with Harding and others. This will begin at 4pm.
Wednesday - focused practice after school with guests coming in.
Thursday - light practice after school with cardio available after for those in need.
That is all. Please let me know if any of you have questions. Additionally, be on the lookout for information on a season banquet. There's much to celebrate.
2/18 - Sectional Week!
Greetings and happy snow day. Hopefully the wrestlers have been busy shoveling driveways. It has been tough sledding recently with sickness and injuries, but we seem to be returning to some normalcy. Here's some important info for the week.
The OHSAA D3 Sectional Tournament is this Friday & Saturday at Ridgedale High School. This will be a rather competitive tourney and one of the few 2 day sectionals in the state. As previously announced, wrestling on Friday begins at 6pm. We will depart from the school by 3:15 to arrive quite comfortably for 4pm weigh-ins. There WILL be a Friday evening weigh out. Wrestling on Saturday (for those advancing) begins at 10am. We will depart by 8:15am to arrive prior to 9am skin checks. This will be a varsity only event. Those not competing are welcome to attend but not mandated to do so. Use THIS LINK for more info about the tournament including timeline.
Those finishing top 4 advance to the district tournament held next weekend at Troy High School. 5th place finishers serve as alternates. There will be details offered for that tournament next week.
I am a bit behind on this but here's a schedule for the remainder of the week.
Tuesday (today) - practice 2:45-4:30
Wednesday - 2:30-5:30. We will wrap up practice likely by 4:15 or so and then head to my classroom for wrestling trivia competition. This will wrap up our MOAC Challenges.
Thursday - 2:30-4:15
I will be at the wrestling room until 9pm or so for youth wrestling for those needing to stay for extra work or come back in for weight check.
Friday & Saturday - Sectional Tourney
After sectionals, those not advancing to districts are released to engage in spring sports and such. Wrestlers are still very welcome to keep coming in for extra work. Perhaps helping those who DO qualify and / or getting a jump on training for next season!
That is all. I will offer more info as needed through the week. Stay warm and enjoy the rest of your day.
2/12 - Busy Busy Weekend
Hi there. It is surreal that the final act of the season is upon us. Here's some updates / reminders about the crowded weekend.
Practice will be standard time tomorrow (Thursday) after school until about 4:30. Youth wrestling begins at 6pm for younger kids and 7:20pm for the older group. It is always great to have help. Especially any of you who have yet to attend. Friday we will pump the brakes a bit and finish about 4pm. Especially at this time in the season, the room and scales are ALWAYS open for those in need. Whether it be for technique, cardio, weight check, etc just let me know.
The MOAC Tourney is 10am at Clearfork. We will depart by 6:45am for 8am weighins. The are running 8 man double elimination brackets. It shouldn't be all that long a day.
The Marysville JV Finale is 2/15 at 10am with 8am weighins. The JVs will need to depart by 7:15am. HERE is a link for ticketing. I will enter as many athletes as possible into this event. This event will run on 6-7 mats. Should be plenty of matches for our JV / younger guys. I will start out at the MOAC tourney with varsity and then make my way to Marysville.
Next week we will be amped up for sectionals. The sectional tourney is a two-day event at Ridgedale. This is a varsity only event. Wrestling begins 6pm on Friday, 2/21 and 10am on Saturday, 2/22. I will offer more details soon.
I thank you so much for your help and support. Please let me know what you need. I am happy to serve.
2/8 - MOAC Week & Super Bowling
Hi there. Just a few things.
As announced in practice the boys are invited to come to Cooper's Bowl tomorrow (2/9) at 2pm as part of our annual MOAC Challenge event. This is always a great fun and fellowship as we head into the final stretch of the season. We will enjoy time together for two hours including bowling, pizza, pop, shoes etc. Some of the cost is taken care of by the wrestling program but please bring $10 to contribute. If the money is a problem just let me know and it will be taken care of.
We will have a relatively standard week of practice as we head into mid February. We divide and conquer this weekend.
The MOAC Tourney is 10am at Clearfork. We will depart by 6:45am for 8am weighins.
The Marysville JV Finale is 2/15 at 10am with 8am weighins. The JVs will need to depart by 7:15am.
We will have wrestleoffs mixed in through the week and wrap up our MOAC Challenge competitions. The guys will be well informed of where they are wrestling as the week picks up.
Please let me know if you have questions. Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday.
2/4 - County Duals & Updates
Hi everyone. I hope all is well. This should be a quick announcement post.
As you are well aware, we wrestle at Elgin tomorrow for the Marion County Duals. Departure will be 4:15 and weigh ins are 5pm. Wrestling will begin at 6pm. We will wrestle Harding first and then another dual dependent on outcome. Elgin will have a 15 min (or so) senior recognition ceremony in between the first two rounds. I will try to arrange some extra matches for JV athletes if available. That means all should have gear, weigh in, and be ready in case.
Much like other teams / schools in the area, we are experiencing issues with cold, flu, etc on the team. Please keep an eye out for symptoms (especially for flu) so we can limit any exposure to others. Likewise, we need to stay disciplined as it pertains to hygiene.
We currently have nothing on the schedule for this weekend other than practice. With buildup of some injuries, sickness, etc it is likely to stay that way. I will offer info quickly if anything changes.
1/29 - Quick Senior Night Update
Hello everyone. Here's super quick info on senior night tonight.
NU has withdrawn from the event tonight due to rampant sickness and some skin issues. This happened yesterday. Boys were informed of this yesterday. My efforts to get a zero hour replacement fell short. Thus... we are wrestling Clearfork only tonight. It will be difficult to ensure that everyone gets matches. For this I apologize. BUT I am not willing to sacrifice the honoring of this special group of seniors.
We will be setting up the event at 3:45 to allow time for basketball to have short practices. Weighins are at 4:30 and wrestling begins at 5:30. Boys are more than welcome to stay in the wrestling room after school if they do not have rides back & forth.
I am structuring the event as follows.
Round 1 - MS North Union vs Clearfork (should be quick)
**Senior Recognition
Round 2 - HS Pleasant vs Clearfork / MS Pleasant vs Clearfork
Round 3 - MS Pleasant vs North Union
If you guys have questions please let me know.
1/26 - Post Sally, Senior Night, and JVs
Hello and happy Sunday. Here's a post for the week. I suspect it will have some length.
Words cannot express my level of appreciation to all who helped make our home tourney a success. To parents... THANK YOU for all the sweat & sacrifice in helping run the hospitality room. I heard nothing but praise about your efforts. Extra thanks to Megan Hibar for running point on the effort. Additional thanks to Tim Haycook for help with the lift and spotlight. AND to all who helped with setup and teardown of the event. THANK YOU coaches for performance and dependability though the weekend. With me running around the place doing things, I sometimes don't get to coach as much. This is not a problem when I have such great people to work with. Additional thank you to David Little for design work with tee shirts, award brackets, and other stuff I may be forgetting in addition to his coaching dependability. To athletes... THANK YOU for your hard work during the weekend. Particularly on Saturday. We decidedly did not perform as we hoped but will regroup, focus up, and dive in for the practices prior to the county meet and league tourney. There's plenty of room for optimism and I am confident in these boys.
This is a busy week. I will offer as much details as possible.
Wednesday we wrestle a super tri along with the middle school vs Clearfork and North Union. For the high school, this also serves as SENIOR NIGHT. We certainly have a crew of seniors worthy of recognition. I am organizing the event as follows. The event begins at 5:30 to allow more time for seniors. Here's my tentative run down.
NU & CF warmup
#1 NU vs CF
Pleasant warmup
Pleasant senior recognition
#2 PL vs CF
#3 PL vs NU
Here's our week in front of us.
MONDAY - standard practice after school. We may finish a touch early. Middle school is coming in right after followed by youth wrestling. Any needing to stay longer may do so.
Tuesday - standard practice after school until 4:30.
Wednesday - Tri & senior night
Thursday - practice 3:15-5pm
Friday standard practice after school
This Saturday our JV athletes compete in the River Valley JV Invitational. The event begins at 9am. We will conduct weighins at home and then depart by 7:10 to arrive for 7:30 skin checks. Varsity will not practice BUT will attend the JV event to support their teammates.
That is all! I cannot believe we are nearing February. We are gonna push hard to produce a finish we can be proud of. Please reach out with any questions.
1/19 - NU Aftermath + Sally
Hello everyone. I trust everyone is having a great (and restful) Sunday. Here's a post for the week.
What a weekend! The boys did some business at the NU Invite. In addition to earning a team championship, we had a record breaker (Ayden), a tournament MVW (Sean), and slew of weight class champs + placers. It was a good day to be a Spartan.
A huge thank you to Coach Little for our social media presence. There was a lot of stuff online celebrating our guys.
This morning, Coach Pasma of Elgin told me he was impressed by our team camaraderie. I love hearing this.
Here's a breakdown for the week!
MONDAY - Practice 9am
TUESDAY - standard after school practice
Youth wrestling begins at 6pm.
WEDNESDAY - Practice 3:15
I would like to move mats, podium, and other supplies over to the school after practice.
THURSDAY - standard after school practice until 4pm
I will need help Thursday night after the girls basketball game laying down mats and such. This will probably happen around 9pm I imagine. At this time guys can also check weight as needed.
This Friday & Saturday is our Sally George Invitational. Wrestling begins 4pm on Friday with a 2pm weighin. We will have an evening weighout and then begin 10am Saturday with 9am skin checks. I am going to try and get some of our JV athletes into the tournament as well. They will be informed of this through the week.
We take great pride in our tournament. Everything from flow of brackets (special thanks to my man Gerald Smith), loads of design work (Coach Little), production value, hospitality room, and more.
I am very appreciative of those who have already donated time and resources for this event. If any of you missed the signup link for hospitality, HERE it is. If you have additional questions, contact Megan Hibar.
That should do it. Don't be shocked if I have need to shoot out other info through the week.
1/12 - Mid January Already!
Hello all. I hope you are having a great Sunday. It is wild to me that we are already in mid January. Here's a post for the week.
The guys wrestled well at the Ron Thomas Invitational. Congrats to all of our placers.
We have a chance to put together a productive week of practice and assemble a complete lineup for the first time since week one. It is exciting to get these guys back to health.
Please make sure we remain diligent about post practice showering, taking sweaty clothes home, etc. We had a few bouts of skin issues this past week. While this stuff can originate from anywhere, it is important that we do what we can.
Here's a schedule for the week.
Monday - standard after school practice. Youth wrestling starts at 6pm for those able to help.
Tuesday - practice time at 3:15 - 5pm
Wednesday - standard after school practice
Thursday - standard after school practice. Youth wrestling starts at 6pm for those able to help.
Friday - practice after school until 4pm
This Saturday is the North Union Invitational. At press time I have not been sent information about this year's event but it generally begins at 9am with 7am weighins. We will therefore leave the school by 6:30am. It is my intent to enter some extras into this tourney. The guys will be well informed of this.
NOTE: So far as I know, there's no additional growth allowance beyond the standard +2. Guys cutting down need to be militant throughout the week with a healthy plan to get to optimal weight.
Our Sally George Invitational is in two weeks time. A great many parents already have the ball rolling on hospitality room help, outside donations, etc. I am so very thankful. Let me know if you want info on how to get involved. We take great pride in this tournament.
That is all for now. Reach out with any questions. I am happy to serve.
1/5/2025 - Weekend Aftermath + Practice Schedule & RT Invite
Hello everyone. Here's a new post for our upcoming week.
A massive THANK YOU to all who helped make the Larry Holman JV Invite a success. The event ran smoothly and the guys wrestled well. Good wins and lots of growth. Thanks to Gerald Smith for the pools + brackets, to varsity athletes for the added help with jobs and coaching, and to parents & other volunteers for table work and an excellent hospitality room. Our wrestling program is truly blessed to be surrounded by such great people.
The boys wrestled in a tough tough tourney at the 62nd annual JC Gorman Invitational. Missing several starters, we struggled early and then rallied. Congrats to placers Sean Murphy and Chase Van Oosten.
Practice this week will consist of plenty of cardio, live wrestling + an emphasis of fundamental technique. A few practices will start a bit later to allow additional coaches to have a presence. I will be in the room regardless for anyone not heading home after school. Here's a breakdown.
Monday - after school until 4:30. Youth wrestling starts at 6pm for those able to help.
Tuesday - 3:15 - 5pm
Wednesday - 3:15 - 5pm
Thursday - after school until 4:30. There is a home middle school event that evening.
Friday & Saturday - Ron Thomas Sr. Invite
Athletes need to manage weight throughout the week. There will be added emphasis on following a schedule to maximize performance.
This Friday is the Ron Thomas Sr. Invite. This is a varsity bracketed tournament. I am told that there may be opportunity to additional wrestlers. We will know more about that through the week. The event is being held at Jonathan Alder High School (9200 St Route 42 South in Plain City OH). We will depart as a team by 2pm from the wrestling room. Weighins for day 1 begin at 3:30pm. Due to a team wrestling the night before, there's an additional pound for this tourney. 106=109 for those who have made scratch weight. Wrestling begins at 5:30pm. Saturday competition begins at 9am. We will need to leave by 7am to arrive in time for skin checks.
I may be posting additional info through the week, but that is all for now. Reach out with any questions.
12/31/2024 - Happy New Year
Hello all. Just a few things!
Boys are working pretty hard to ready up for the Gorman & home JV Invite this weekend. New Year's Day hits us right in the middle of the week as we prepare. The room will be open for an optional workout tomorrow at 10am for those in need. This is OPTIONAL. Do not miss family time for this on the holiday.
If there's anyone in need of the room who cannot make the 10am start time work, reach out to me and we can work something out a bit later in the day.
Please refer to the previous post for reminders about the very busy weekend.
Quit reading this post! Enjoy time with friends and family as we say goodbye to 2024 and welcome 2025! I appreciate all of you.
12/26/2024 - Practices, Brecksville, and Beyond
Hello everyone. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Here's an important post for the coming weeks. There's a lot coming up.
** Practice Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will continue to be 10am until about 11:45. We will use the time to fine tune technique and stay in shape.
The Brecksville Holiday Invitational is December 29-30. This is an elite tournament. Only some of our squad will be competing. I will make sure those competing stay well informed on the timeline for the weekend. Weighins begin at 8am on Sunday, 12/29. Wrestling for the event begins at 10am. There's a 3-7pm weight check / open mats opportunity + a mandatory coaches meeting the night before. Those competing will depart using coach transportation (I will offer forms for this) around 4pm on 12/28. We will stay overnight at the Holiday Inn 12/28 & 12/29. The cost for hotel will be covered. Here's hotel info. Holiday Inn Cleveland South-Independence, 6001 Rockside Road, Independence, OH 44131
Those not competing at the Brecksville Holiday Invite will likely wrestle at the NU Invitational on 1/18.
Practices next week will be as follows:
Monday, 12/30 - 10am
Tuesday, 12/31 - 3:15pm
Wednesday, 1/1 - no practice
Thursday, 1/2 - practice 3:15pm
Things get cooking pretty quickly in 2025. On Friday, Jan 3rd, varsity heads to the 62nd annual JC Gorman Invite at Mansfield Senior High School. The event begins at 3pm on Friday and 10am Saturday. Weighins on Friday are at 1pm. In order to comfortably arrive on time, we will depart from Pleasant by 11:30am. This will be varsity only. Those not competing at the Gorman will practice Friday morning 9-10:30am.
We are divided on Saturday, Jan 4th. Those competing at the Gorman will depart by bus by 7:30am. Those not competing at the Gorman will be wrestling in our HOME JV tournament. While it is a bit manic to separate teams, the Gorman is a great tourney. It is also a great date for us to host our annual Larry Holman JV Invitational.
We will use Thursday to begin moving mats to the high school. I will then need some help Friday evening putting mats down and getting things set. I may use JV athletes for this BUT am very eager to accept parent volunteers to assist as well. We will have a hospitality room for workers, officials, and coaches in my classroom.
** With all of the craziness of the schedule, I will undoubtedly have need to offer some additional details as events draw closer. Until then, you are welcome to reach out to me with any questions.
12/15 - We Soldier On!
Hello everyone. This post will break down the week.
The boys wrestled admirably against some of the best competition in the state. We were able to get 4 wins while also getting our more experienced guys tough matches to prepare for January and beyond. Additionally, some of our younger and inexperienced guys were able to experience highs to help validate the hard work put in. We find out what we are made of when adversity presents itself. We left the event in relatively good health, good experience, and great team culture.
Here's some important info for the week. .
Practice will be standard time after school Monday through Thursday. Friday will begin at 3:15. The boys do not have school but I have school inserice.
Monday will be a technique heavy practice as we search to get better at some of the things we struggled with over the weekend.
Don't forget about our apparel store. Click HERE if you want Pleasant Wrestling swag.
The Junior Varsity will be competing at West Holmes HS this Saturday. I will get as many JV into the event as possible for mat time and experience. The event will be run with pools so the guys should get plenty of matches.
The invite will begin at 9am. Weighins will be conducted by me at home just prior to departure. Those competing will need to meet at the room by 6am.
Varsity athletes + any not heading to West Holmes (for whatever reason) will practice at 9am.
**Practices over holidays will generally begin at 10am. Please let me know in advance of any family related commitments. We will have our annual pj practice + gift exchange at 8am Christmas Eve. Please let me know if you cannot take part in the exchange so I can make arrangements for everyone to get a gift.
** After Christmas we will begin preparation for the Brecksville Holiday Tourney. Some of the varsity athletes will be participating in this event while others will save schedule points for the North Union Invitation in mid January. A hotel will be used for the Brecksville Tourney. Those participating and / or attending will be staying at Holiday Inn Cleveland South-Independence - 6001 Rockside Road in Independence, OH 44131. Those not attending the tourney will practice Monday Dec 30th at 10am.
** We will soon be prepping for the JC Gorman Invite AND our PHS Larry Holman JV Invite. Lot's to look forward to.
That is all for now. Please reach out if you have questions.
12/8 - We are off and running!
The team is off and running with our season's first competition. The varsity performed solidly at Mount Vernon while still leaving plenty of room for improvement. We look to improve health and move guys to optimum weight class.
We enter a very important practice week. Putting in work with drill, troubleshooting noticeable shortcommings, and cardio / strength training all in preparation for a big big weekend.
FIRST some odds & ends info! Strap in... There's a lot here.
The boys are being sent info and a link to be included in a Christmas gift exchange. There's a $25 limit. The link will be texted to them & also available HERE. Christmas exchange will be during our annual Christmas Eve PJ practice.
We are opening up a Pleasant Wrestling apparel store within the next day or so. It will be pushed out via Remind and FacebookI am told that orders completed prior to 12/13 will be received prior to Christmas. Thank you to Copper Lane for the apparel and to our very own David Little for the design work.
Sam Mentzer has been accepted to attend and wrestle for Tiffin next year! We are having a signing gathering at the school Wednesday at 5:30pm. All are welcome to attend.
Competition this weekend is a bit complicated. I will be as clear as possible and follow-up with athletes at practice.
The varsity (and perhaps some others) will be competing in a tough two-day duals event at the University of Findlay called the Roughneck Duals. Wrestling will be held at the Kohler Fitness and Recreation Center on campus. See map below. The address for the university is 1000 N. Main St, Findlay OH. With limited seating, parents are encouraged to bring chairs. The tournament starts at 1pm with 12pm matside weighins. We will need to depart from school on Friday by 10:30am to arrive comfortably. Weighouts will take place after the final match Friday night. Weighin for the event will be scratch +1. Those who certified weight on Saturday can make use of the extra pound. Those who did not can make use of it for Friday night weighout. Competition for Saturday will begin at 10am with 8:30am skin checks. We will need to depart by 7am. This is a very competitive event. The majority of starters should see as many as 10 matches. Our philosophy has always been to offer a tough schedule in order to prepare for the most important parts of the season.
The junior varsity will be wrestling at Elgin Friday night at 6pm. Weighin will be conducted at home and skin checks will start at 5pm. Bus will depart by 4:30. Each athlete should get 2-3 matches. **Those wrestling at Elgin will not be going to day one of the Roughneck Duals at Findlay. BUT I very much want them to be there on Saturday to see great wrestling and offer energy and support as important members of the team.
After this week we will turn our attention to junior varsity athletes for the West Holmes JV Invite on 12/21. Christmas is then right around the corner. Thank you all for your energy and support thus far this season and for your flexibility.

12/5 - Quick Update
Just a few things...
For Saturday morning we need to share a bus with the middle school. This is due to lack of drivers. High school & Middle School athletes will depart from the hs wrestling room by 5:45am. This is bonkers early. Bring pillows. Go to bed early. I will be at the room by 5:15am for anyone needing to come in early.
The bus will drop us off at Mount Vernon in time for our 7am weighin. Middle schoolers will then be transported to Clearfork for their tournament. The bus will remain with the middle school. Parents can sign out athletes after conclusion of the Mount Vernon tourney. I will also have my van there for those in need. I am sorry for all the mess.
The tourney begins at 9am. I am going to get as many JV athletes into the event as possible. The guys will know by Friday if they are in or not. Any athletes I do not take to Mount Vernon will have Saturday off but a short practice Sunday.
It is very regrettable that the JV tourney at Northmor was canceled. I will do what I can to replace it and get these guys on the mat.
Please get ahold of me if you have any questions.
12/1/2024 - Crazy Week + First Competition
Hello all. Here's a post to carry us through the week. It is a very hectic but very exciting time of the season.
The boys wrestled rather well at our scrimmage. I was proud of how hard they worked. Even our guys with limited experience. We got out of it what we came for.
We will have regular practice after school on Monday. Those doing alpha assessments will depart with me for Marysville by 2:30. If you didn't do it prior to Thanksgiving, you are going Monday.
For those doing alphas Monday, I am including the alpha consent form HERE. There is also an alpha profile sheet HERE.
Tuesday is our picture day. We will take pics as quickly as we can after school. Forms were handed out at practice. HECrazy RE is a digital copy if needed. Senior banner photos will take place immediately after team photos.
Wrestleoffs for varsity and JV spots will take place during practices this week. Athletes will need to declare desired weight class by Monday. Practices on Tuesday and Wednesday will extend an extra hour until 5:30 to help allow for wrestleoffs to finish.
Practice will be standard on Thursday after school until 4:30. Practice on Friday will finish up by 4pm. Those needing to stay longer may do so.
Youth wrestling practices take place Monday and Thursday this week. The younger grades are 6-7:10pm. Older grades are 7:20-8:30pm. High school athletes are always welcome to come and help out. We have a ton of young athletes.
We have two events on the schedule this Saturday.
Varsity will wrestle at Mount Vernon for the John Brown Invitational. The event is held at Energy Field House 101 Yellow Jacket Dr. Mount Vernon 43050. This event begins at 9am with a 7am weighin. Varsity will need to depart at 6am to make weighins. That means get to bed early. Tickets are available online or cash sales at the door. Tickets are $7 Adult and $5 Student/Seniors. If purchasing online, use THIS LINK.
The JVs were scheduled to wrestle at Northmor. Due to their football tourney run, this tourney has been CANCELLED. I have a potential replacement lined up for the weekend but nothing official yet. In the event that this falls through completely, I will find another JV opportunity to fill out the schedule during the season.
Tons of info here. I thank you in advance for your flexibility and patience as we power through the busy week. You are all appreciated.
11/29/2024 - A Few Things
Hello everyone. I hold all had a great Thanksgiving. Just a few things.
The guys need to meet at the wrestling room by 6:45am at the latest ready to depart for Marysville. Upon arrival, we will have a good warmup and then get started at 8am. The scrimmage should conclude by 10am. We should get home in plenty of time to see the Bucks stomp a mud hole in the team up north. For those new to the sport, scrimmages in wrestling are basically a large scale live wrestling practice with other schools.
IMPORTANT! Due to lack of driver, we do not have a bus for the morning. I have secured assistance of several parents to help serve as a caravan to the event. We will have Addy, Murphy, Young, Van Oosten, Little, and Robinson vehicles ready for our large team. Thanks to all commiting to help out.
Lastly... Athletes please bring supplies for showering. You don't want to wear sweaty nasty clothes for 35 minutes of the drive home.
** 2nd chance alphas are Monday. Picture day is Tuesday (extra picture form HERE), and wrestleoffs will take place this week for JV & Varsity. I will have a detailed posting later for our busy first week of competition.
11/26/2024 - A Few Things
Good evening. Here's just a few reminders + brief info.
We are meeting up at the room by 7:30am tomorrow. I talked to the boys about standard operation for the morning of alphas. I will arrive to the room by 7am for anyone needing to come in a bit earlier. Upon arrival, the guys will check weight with light workout as needed. There will be some top technique as well.
We will depart for Marysville by 8:45am. PLEASE have your consent form and alpha profile sheet handed out at practice. If you do not have it for whatever reason, it can be found HERE. You need to have a singlet with you and form of ID.
When we get back from alphas, the guys have option to head to Bob Evans for lunch. The cost of this will be covered. This is optional. Those opting to attend will need to arrange for their own transportation from the school to Bob's. You can reach out to me with any questions about this.
** Lastly... we have some emergence of some skin issues in the room. So far it has been mostly ringworm. We need to all be militant with showering at practice. Use soap and scrub. Make sure you have clean towel to use and fresh clothes to put on afterwards. Ringworm is very very minor... but it keeps you off the mat if it isn't treated. A form will need to be filled out by an MD. This can be found HERE or given out at practice. If you have any questions about this please let me know. I am happy to help.
** The boys will have a well deserved break for Thanksgiving. We will then practice Friday at 8am. Our scrimmage at Marysville Saturday begins at 8am and will conclude by 10am. Our bus will leave from the wrestling room by 7am. Please arrive early.
11/24/2024 - Alphas, Turkey Time, and MORE
Greetings! I hope everyone has had a great weekend. Here's some important info as we head into Thanksgiving and alpha assessments.
Congrats to Greyson, Sean, Sam, and Luke on representing our team at the Central District All-Star Meet. It was a fun event and we had a great time.
Practice this week will be standard on Monday and Tuesday. It is imporant to have excellent workouts as we head into Alpha assessments.
Alphas are this Wednesday morning 10am at Marysville.
We have two opportunities for alphas. It is up to athletes and where they are with weight as far as which one they choose. The first one is 11/27 (prior to Thanksgiving) and the second is 12/2, Both are at Marysville. It is likely that most will be assessing on 11/27. I am including that form HERE. There is also an alpha profile sheet HERE. Again... those who do not alpha on 11/27 will need to do it on December 2nd.
** I would like athletes to report to the wrestling room by 7:30am Wednesday morning. Those close on weight can sweat a bit (although this is not ideal). Others will do a very brief light technique session on top position. We will depart as a team via bus for Marysville by 8:45am to get there comfortably early. Alphas should not take all that long. I estimate a return to school by 11:30.
**After we get back, the guys will have an option to head to Bob Evans for a team lunch. This has become a bit of tradition. Again... this is OPTIONAL. Athletes will need to provide their own transportation there. I can take some in my van but will need to have parents sign a form for this. The cost for this lunch will be covered.
** That is a ton of information. Do not be shy about contacting me with any questions. I am happy to help.
11/17/2024 - An Excellent Start!
Happy Sunday everyone. Just some odds and ends. You will likely get another post later in the week.
Don't forget! Tonight is the "Tip Off" meet the team event 6pm at the high school. Please arrive early (at least 5:45). SENIORS! You are being asked to arrive by 5:30. Warmups were handed out at practice Saturday. I will have a few extras at the school for those in need. We are wearing warmups and jeans. NOTE: I am ordering more warmups at both the middle & high school levels to account for our large numbers. Those without the newest warmups will have them asap.
We are off to a great start for the season. The guys are working hard and geling together nicely. Our new additions (freshman and others) are adjusting to the high school level and hopefully embracing the process. This is a very tough and physically demanding sport. Things will get easier as athletes start to get into wrestling shape.
We will have a full week of practice this week. Reminders...
Youth wrestling registration is Monday and Tuesday night 6:45-8pm in the wrestling room. Feel free to spread word.
The PHS wrestling parent meeting is Tuesday at 5:15 in my classroom at the school. It is room 100 right across from the main office. I will talk about expectations, communication, some handbook items, and alpha assessments.
I am working on a scrimmage for this Saturday morning. If we do not have a scrimmage, there will be standard practice in the morning.
Picture day is Dec 3rd. I will have forms available to athletes and likely posted on the website.
That is all for now. If you have additional need for information you may reach me at 740-225-9044. I am happy to help. See you tonight.
11/12/2024 - Season Almost HERE!
Hello all. With our first practice being this Friday, we have officially entered week one of the season. Numerous middle and high school athletes have been coming to preseason workouts. Currently, both our middle and high school rosters are just over 30 athletes each. Additionally, many have been asking about youth wrestling registration. Wrestling is the greatest sport in the world and it seems to be in high demand at Pleasant. :)
I have recently finished the season calendar. It has all practices and events. There's also a season schedule posted. Each week, I generally post announcements that offer specific details. Particularly on tournament start times, weighins, departure, etc. You will be well informed.
Also notice the "links and forms" page. This helps with many of the needs that spring up during the season.
Here are some beginning of the season highlights listed on the calendar to get you started.
11/15 - first official practice
11/16 - Saturday practice 10am followed by team meeting
11/17 - winter sports "Meet the Team" 6pm

Lindsay Law form
** See "Links & Forms" for help with any of these forms. If you played a fall sport, you are good to go.
We will begin some off season conditioning next week. This is optional but encouraged. Especially for those not involved in a fall sport. Conditioning will take the form of mostly cardio and strength training. We will add in some wrestling drills & skills as well.
For now, preseason conditioning will take place after school Mondays and Wednesdays until 4pm. We will meet at the visitor side of the track. Since we have no school 10/21, this will begin Wednesday, 10/23. Open mats will continue Sundays 2-3:15pm. For those of you not in a fall sport... the room can be available upon request for additional workouts.
If you are not plugged in to the REMIND account for wrestling, PLEASE do so. If I have to change the schedule or cancel a preseason workout, this is how the announcement would be made.

8/5/2024 Spartan Slam pt 2
Hello. Thank you to all who have participated in the fundraising up to this point. Several of you have sold above and beyond the required amount. People seem eager to participate. I found 25 teams without much trouble. Once we add the teams found by the athletes we should have quite an event. We have tons of sponsors and quite a few raffle items. We are moving towards what we hope will be a very successful "Spartan Slam" event this Saturday.
FIRST OF ALL...
I need to collect what has been sold. Teams and 20 raffle tix from each of you wonderful people. Getting stuff turned in will allow me to register teams and establish tee times + track raffle participants. IF YOU NEED MORE TIX please let me know.
I will be at the my classroom (room 100) during the following times for collection of money and ticket stubs:
Wednesday, 8/7 - 8am-10:30am. This coincides with the drug testing date offred at the school for those participating in extracurricular activities. Those drug testing can simply drop off fund raising stuff while at the school. Easy peasy. If you need info on drug testing click HERE. Additionally, see link HERE for needed forms.
Thursday, 8/8 - 4-6pm (football swing by prior to practice as needed)
If neither of these windows work, please let me know how you want me to collect from you.
Wrestlers... I would like as many of you as possible to have a presence at the event. All of these efforts are being made to benefit the program that you are part of. While I do not need wrestlers there for the entire duration (6 hours), I would very much like each of you to be there at least half of it. And I would like to spread athlete presence out a bit. Those not playing football... Please plan to be there from 10am-1pm (ish). Football players... please be there after your scrimmage at Fredericktown.
I look forward to seeing many of you on Saturday!! Please feel free to reach out if there are questions. Thank you.
7/26 - 2024 Spartan Slam
Greetings everyone. It is almost time for the Spartan Slam fundraiser. As most of you already know, this year's event will take place on August 10th. Again hosted at Paradise Park.
This event will be a putt-putt golf team competition along with a raffle to make money for our program.
This is our 5th annual event. Last year was a great success. We continue to be ambitious from a fundraising standpoint.
This year, we expect to again be a successful team and have high-quality tournaments in our schedule, including the Brecksville Holiday Tournament in the Cleveland area and the Roughneck Duals at the University of Findlay. Of course, adding events, such as this, not only requires funds to enter, but to provide for travel, and potential overnight stay at a hotel, plus dinner for the team. There are other expenditures that may be on the horizon as well. It is ALWAYS a goal for me to keep financial burden minimal for families.
We are asking Wrestlers & Parents for their assistance in multiple ways:
- Selling Team Entry Tickets – We will be selling entry tickets for participant teams; one team of 4 players for $50. The teams will need to present their purchased ticket at the event to play and receive a commemorative ‘Spartan Slam’ ball. The team with the lowest total score (18 holes) will win $250 and second place will get their entry fee back. Additionally, a $50 prize will be awarded to the individual player with the most ‘hole-in-one’s.
- Selling Raffle Tickets – We will be selling raffle tickets to help generate some extra funds in addition to the Putt-Putt event. Raffle winners will not be required to participate in the event nor be present to win. The cost per ticket will be $1.
- Volunteering – Of course, when August 10th rolls around, we will need helping hands. At the event, we will need help for raffle, taking tickets & logging team scores, and wrestlers being visible, kind, and thankful. I am aware football players have a scrimmage that day and will need a later time for attending the event. I will certainly work with this.
Thus far, we have a tremendous showing for hole sponsors. Well over 35 and approaching 40. Thanks so much for the help we have already received. We are still in the process of gathering items to use for the raffle. Our featured prize is a Blackstone flattop grill and a Pleasant family sports pass. Much like last year, we will hope to have as many as 40-50 prizes such as car washes, gift cards, tumblers, etc. If any of you have ideas / suggestions for raffle items please let me know. I am bad at turning down help.
Each wrestler is expected (PLEASE) to sell 20 raffle tickets and two team entries. Try and get at least one team.
Saturday, July 27th 12pm - 1pm at the wrestling room.
Sunday, July 28th 1-3pm at the wrestling room.
Tuesday, July 30th 4-5pm in room 100 at the school (my classroom). Football players may stop by prior to their 5pm practice for convenience.
I am giving wrestlers loads of opportunities to meet up for tickets. But please let me know if none of these windows work. I will happily drop tickets off to your house. I will begin collection of tickets and stubs as the event approaches. Probably a few days prior. Those with questions are certainly welcome to reach me at 740-225-9044.
6/17 - Summer Camp Details
Hi there. I hope everyone is doing well. As promised on the Remind message sent out yesterday, here's details on our youth camp this week.
First is setup. I will need help laying mats down Tuesday (tomorrow) evening at 7:30pm. This endeavor shouldn't take all that long since our needed mats are already on the gym stage.
Next is the camp itself. Each day of the camp will roll with two sessions as in years past.
9:30-11am
lunch break
11:30-1pm
I would like as many of our athletes as possible to help with the event. Particularly showing / assisting with technique and keeping our young ones on task :) Even simply having a presence at youth camp shows future wrestlers that they are important. Please make every effort to attend.
5/28 - Summer Camp & Off Season
Hello everyone. I hope summer break is off to a great start. I know for me it tends to be an important time to unplug and put some time and attention on family and other facets of my professional life away from wrestling. However, it is now time to get things rolling on our summer off season opportunities.
Structured open mats will take place Wednesdays 10-11:30pm and Sundays 1:30-3pm starting 6/2. NOTE: The room is available other times as well upon request. Just give me enough prior knowledge. It is best practice to make sure you have a workout partner coming.
4/10 - Reminder
Don't forget! The PHS wrestling banquet is this Sunday evening at 6:30pm. We will eat and then head to the theater.
In order to contribute to the event, please bring the following:
Freshman - beverages
Sophomores - chips / dessert
Juniors & Seniors - a main or side dish
I will be bringing a main dish. For those bringing a main or side dish, please call or text me at 740-225-9044 and let me know what is being brought so we don't double up.
** The 3rd annual Spartan Spring Gala is April 19th at The Brickyard. This event is hosted by our booster club. I believe tickets are still available. See THIS LINK for more information. The wrestling program is being tasked with providing a basket to contribute to the silent auction at the event. This is something I am happy to do. The Boosters have been very supportive of our sports including the wrestling program. They generously paid for half of our practice mat. In order to get our basket, I am asking for modest donation from each family willing. Perhaps $10. Again... for those willing. Thanks in advance.
We take great pride in our banquet. I look forward to seeing everyone Sunday. Please reach out if you have questions.
3/21 - A Few Things
Hello wrestlers & parents! Just a quick post here.
Don't forget! The NCAA Tournament watch party is Saturday at 6:30pm in the wrestling room. I will be reaching out to see who all is coming sometime tomorrow. Please remember to bring $5 to help with pizza cost. Athletes can bring other snack / side items if desired.
The PHS wrestling banquet is Sunday, April 14th at 6:30pm in the new building. It takes time to get awards and put together videos for the event. Thank you for your patience. We will take the time to honor our wrestlers and others who helped make the season a success. The event will start in the cafeteria and then finish in the theater area.
In order to contribute to the event, please bring the following:
Freshman - beverages
Sophomores - chips / dessert
Juniors & Seniors - a main or side dish
I will be bringing a main dish. For those bringing a main or side dish, please call or text me at 740-225-9044 and let me know what is being brought so we don't double up.
It will be great to see everyone again. Please reach out to me with any questions.
ps - Those of you who have not turned in your wrestling gear... bring it to me asap.
3/14 - State Aftermath & More
Hello everyone.
I want to thank all who made the state tournament weekend a success. Whether competing, coaching, or simply there in support... thanks very much.
Congrats to our OHSAA State Tournament participants Landon O'Donnell, Sam Mentzer, and Daxton Chase. Additional congrats to Sam for his 5th place finish and to Dax for being state runner-up!
**What a season it was! We have much to celebrate. Look for info on a banquet in the near future. Likely to take place just after spring break.
**For those who ordered Team Strength senior shirts, Kortney Cleveland will be reaching out to you when orders are in hand.
For those who do not attend at the high school, I will be in the wrestling room after school until 3:30 tomorrow and then again on Monday.
There has been interest in having an NCAA Tournament watch party in the wrestling room. We did this last season. We will do this again on Saturday, March 23rd at 6:30pm.

2/25 - On To Districts
Greetings. Hopefully you have enjoyed your Sunday. Now you will enjoy another one of my announcement postings. 😀
The boys worked hard at sectionals. Congrats to Skyler Wolf, Daxton Chase, and Sam Mentzer on being weight class champs. Earning 2nd place finishes were Sean Murphy, Greyson Haycook, and Landon O'Donnell. Also placing as district alternates were Gabe Spitzer, Chase Van Oosten, Sasha Detwiler, and Luke Flinchbaugh. We will take quite a few with us to districts. Many of you have asked about the well-being of Ayden. He is currently restful and doing much better. 👍
Practice continues this week for qualifiers and alternates. Those not placing and not moving on to a spring sport are very welcome to come in as well. Things are a bit open-ended currently as I am still trying to plan the week.
Monday - practice 4-6pm
Tuesday - (hopefully) scrimmage at Marysville at 4pm. This is still up in the air but I am hopeful. We will be using separate transportation for this likely departing by 3pm.
Wednesday - practice 4-6pm
Thursday - standard after school with an opportunity for extra workout and weight check in the evening.
The district tourney is Friday March 1st and Saturday March 2nd. As previously announced, the event is held at Heath High School. We will will leave early from school on Friday (likely around 11am) to check in at our hotel and then arrive at Heath by 1:30pm. Weighins begin at 2pm and wrestling at 4pm. Two rounds of championship will be wrestled followed by evening weighout. Consolation round 1 begins at 9am Saturday morning. Additional info can be found using the link HERE.
We have rooms at The Hampton Inn Heath / Newark 1008 Hebron Rd, Heath, OH 43056. The cost of hotel will be covered for those going.
I continue to be thankful for all the hard work and support from athletes, coaches, and parents. This should be a fun week. Let me know if you have any questions at all. I am happy to be of service.
2/19 - Time For Sectionals!
Hello everyone. I hope you have had a great Monday. Here's my post for the week.
The boys performed solid at the MOAC Tourney. Certainly a nice way to lead into the post season. Congrats to MOAC 1st teamers Daxton Chase and Sam Mentzer, 2nd team Landon O'Donnell, and honorable mention Greyson Haycook. Additional congrats to Daxton for eclipsing the school record for takedowns in a season. This is quite an achievement!
There does not seem to be any plans at Marysville to reschedule their JV Finale. There simply isn't enough days left in the season to do so. I apologize to our JV parents & athletes that this has happened. I really wanted guys to have a nice tourney in February. There will be many more opportunities in the future.
This Saturday is the Sectional Tourney. As previously mentioned, the event is at Ridgedale High School. Weighins start at 8am with wrestling at 10am. Tickets can be purchased through the www.ohsaa.org/tickets website. $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. A cash only gate will also be available at the door. I plan to take all athletes to the event. Those not qualifying for districts will then be released to begin spring sports next week. Those wishing to workout with district qualifiers are most welcome to do so.
Our annual MOAC Challenge rages on! Only a few more competitions left. Dax's team is leading with 14 points with Landon's closely behind at 12. Sasha's team is at 8 points and Skyler's at 5.
Our remaining practice schedule this week will be as follows.
Tuesday = 4-6pm
Wednesday = after school until 5:30pm. This will allow time for our trivia challenge.
Thursday = standard after school until 4:30.
Friday = after school until 4pm.
Sunday's bowling excursion was a blast. Check out the video for some highlights.
2/16 - Snow Snow Go Away... Please Read
Good evening. The JV Tourney at Marysville was just canceled due to weather conditions. As of now, the MOAC Tourney at Clearfork is still a go. If they go level 2, then Clearfork may push the event later in the day or perhaps move it to Sunday. If they remain on level 1 their intent is to have the meet as scheduled.
I will pass on information as I receive it. For all heading to Clearfork, please be ready to leave from the wrestling room by 6:30am instead of 6:45am. Give yourself plenty of time in the morning. I will be up super early to monitor road conditions myself.
Call or text me if you need anything.
** With the tough road conditions, attendance for those not competing at the MOAC Tourney (JVs) will be optional. Those wishing to come in support may certainly do so.
2/13 - Mid February Already
It is hard to believe that we are at this point in the season. Here's some needed info for the week and some for beyond.
It was an honor to represent Div III at state duals this past weekend. We had hoped for better results but will use the learning experience to springboard us into the most important portion of the season.
This Saturday we have split locations for JV and varsity. This is not commonplace in February but I wanted to make sure our JV athletes had quality competition in the later stages of the season.
JV will be heading to Marysville High School and competing at their JV Finale. This is a 9am start and 8am skin check. I will conduct weigh in prior to departure. Wrestlers will need to report to the room by 7am.
The varsity will head to Clearfork High School for the MOAC Tournament. This event begins at 10am with an 8am weighin. The bus will depart by 6:45am to arrive comfortably on time.
NOTE: Those not competing at either event will head to Clearfork.
The OHSAA Sectional Tournament is Saturday, 2/24. We will be heading to Ridgedale. I will include more info on this event when it becomes available.
The following weekend (3/1 & 3/2) is the district tournament. You must place top 4 at sectionals to qualify for this. Our district is at Heath High School. We will be using an overnight hotel stay for those qualifying.
The Hampton Inn Heath / Newark 1008 Hebron Rd, Heath, OH 43056. The cost of hotel will be covered.
Those placing top 4 at districts advance to the OHSAA State Tournament March 8, 9, 10. Coaches and qualifying athletes will be staying at...
Hampton Inn & Suites 3160 Olentangy River Rd . The cost will be covered.
Lastly... As part of tradition, we will be starting our MOAC Challenge games tomorrow. Additionally, I would like to take the team bowling on Sunday at Cooper's Bowl at 1pm. We will eat some pizza and attempt to roll a ball towards some pins. The cost will be covered. I will let everyone know if this changes in any way.
2/8 - Brief Updates
Hi there. I hope everyone is having a great day. Here's some quick info about the rest of the week.
Thank you for all the support last night for the county event & senior recognition. We took a tough loss BUT will circle the wagons and make every effort to use it as an opportunity to grow as we enter the most important time of the season.
This Saturday is our OHSWCA DIV III State Duals where we will compete against some of the finest squads around. This is an exciting opportunity. The event is held at Versailles High School at 280 Marker Rd.
Versailles, OH 45380. The event begins at 10am with weighins between 9-9:30am. We will depart by 7am to make it comfortably for weighins. Tickets can be purchased at the door ($15) or online HERE. This is the order of operation.
Round I: Quarterfinals for Top 1⁄2 Bracket
Round II: Quarterfinals for Bottom 1⁄2 Bracket
Round III: Consolation Semifinals
Round IV: Championship Semifinals
Round V: 5th and 7th Place Matches
Round VI: 1st and 3rd Place Matches
It is UNBELIEVABLE that we are moving toward mid February already. Here soon we will be using words like sectionals, districts, and state. Again... thank you for all the support, patience, and flexibility it has required to get to this point. We have a wonderful community of parents and athletes.
2/3 - Advancing to State Duals
Hello all. Not a bad morning! The fellas advanced to the Div III OHSWCA State Duals. Despite quite a bit of adversity along with skin issues and some injuries, the guys beat two quality programs. High marks to the team for great efforts. They worked hard and embraced high level team concept. Skyler Wolf & Greyson Haycook selflessly stepped up big despite injuries. Daxton Chase rolled through two top ten ranked athletes, even bumping up a weight class against NM to do so. Others performed admirably whether in matches or supportive roles. Again... not a bad morning.
The the State Duals round of 8 is held at Versailles High School on Saturday, Feb 10th at 10am. I can assume the weighins will be somewhere between 8-9am start time. I will get details out when I know more.
I need some help!! Two of our three competition mats can finally be moved out of the high school and into storage. I plan to do this about 2pm. Shouldn't take long so long as there's help. Athletes are cordially invited. Parent volunteers are of course welcome as well.
This Wednesday is the Marion County Duals with Elgin and Harding. Wrestling for this event begins at 6pm with a 5pm weighin. This will also serve as our senior night. What a great group of guys we have to honor! I will call out seniors and parents sometime in between our two duals. Please let me know if you wish to get involved in some capacity.
Here's our schedule for the week!
Monday - Practice 4-6pm
Tuesday - standard practice after school
Wednesday - county duals at PHS
Thursday - standard practice after school
Friday - short practice after school until 4pm
That is all for now. Thank you athletes, coaches, and parents for ALL you do to support the program.
1/28 - Sally Aftermath & News
Hello everyone. I hope you have all had a great Sunday. What a weekend!
Massive thanks are in order to all who helped make the Sally a success. To parents... THANK YOU for all the sweat & sacrifice in helping run the hospitality room. All I heard from coaches was positive comments. Extra thanks to Stacey Young for running point on the effort. Additional thanks for help with setup and teardown of the event. THANK YOU coaches for performance and dependability though the weekend. With me running around the place doing things, I sometimes don't get to coach as much. This is not a problem when I have such great people to work with. Additional thank you to David Little for design work with tee shirts, singlets, award brackets, and other stuff I may be forgetting. To Melodie Little, Faith Kowalczyck, Hailey Robinson, and Anna Songer for pics, video work, statting, etc. To athletes... Despite being significantly less than 100%, you performed rather admirably. Practice hasn't been normal for awhile. I look forward getting to optimal health. Congrats to placers Chase Van Oosten (6th), Ayden O'Dell (5th), Luke Flinchbaugh (3rd), Landon O'Donnell (3rd), Julien Griffith (2nd), & Skyler Wolf (2nd). And to champs Daxton Chase and Sam Menzter.
Practice this week is outlined below.
Monday will be after school until about 4pm. Coach Crace will be in 6-7:15 for some extra technique.
Tuesday practice will be standard after school
Wednesday practice 4-6pm
Thursday standard after school
Friday practice after school until 4pm
This Saturday, Feb 3rd, we have the opportunity to host the OHSWCA District Dual Tournament. This serves as a regional qualifier for state duals to be held at Versailles High School on Feb 10th. . We earned the right to host based on returning roster and accomplishments thus far this season. It is a great opportunity. I am a bit behind on this, but at press time we will likely begin with a weighin at 9am and wrestling at 10am. I will let you know if this changes. Teams present will be Pleasant, Amanda Clearcreek, Westfall, and Northmor. We will end up wrestling two duals.
That is all for now. Please let me know if there are any needs out there regarding questions, health, schedule complications, etc. Have a great night.
1/21 - Sally Week
Hello everyone. Here's some quick updates for a very important week for the program.
Congrats to our participants at the NU Invite and to champs Ayden O'Dell, Daxton Chase, and Sam Mentzer. Despite limited numbers, it was a productive and exciting day.
At risk of being optimistic, we seem to be on the right track on the topic of skin infection. Incidents have been identified and clearance timeline secured. Please continue to help me monitor this situation moving forward. It takes a village.
Practice this week is outlined below. Early in the week will be limited contact progressing toward one partner. If all goes to plan we will achieve a semblance of normalcy by mid week.
Monday will be after school until about 4pm with emphasis on strength and conditioning.
Tuesday practice will be standard after school
Wednesday practice 4-6pm
Thursday standard after school until 4pm. Those needing more workout may certainly stay longer.
This Friday -Saturday is our Sally George Invitational. Wrestling begins 4pm on Friday with a 2pm weighin. We will have an evening weighout and then begin 10am Saturday with 9am skin checks.
We take great pride in our tournament. Everything from flow of brackets (special thanks to my man Gerald Smith), design work (Coach Little), production value, hospitality room, and more.
I am very appreciative of those who have already donated time and resources for this event. If any of you missed the signup link for hospitality, HERE it is again. If you have additional questions, contact Stacey Young.
That should do it. Don't be shocked if I have need to shoot out other info through the week.
1/14 - Our Spartans Soldier On!
Happy Sunday everyone. I hope it has been a restful day. Here's our post for this week.
Despite being without some of our most experienced wrestlers, the boys performed admirably at Saturday's Licking Heights Invitational. Congrats to our placers Sean Murphy, Greyson Haycook, Chase Van Oosten, Skyler Wolf, Sasha Detwiler, and Luke Flinchbaugh. Additional shoutout to senior Skyler Wolf for producing perhaps the gutsiest performance I have ever seen.
As many of you are well aware, we have experienced the introduction of skin issues on the team. This cost some of our guys mat time at Licking Heights while others had to seek medical clearance to participate. I will be monitoring this situation carefully. Skin will be checked prior to each practice and protective Defense foam will be applied. The room will be vigorously cleaned and locker room free of sweaty clothing. We have already made excellent progress ridding the room of infection. Continued diligence is important.
Last minute info alert! Due to flu issues in late December and more recent skin problems, quite a few of the boys have season schedule points available. We have the opportunity to add a tri THIS THURSDAY at Triad along with London. We will mix in varsity and JV for this. I will keep boys informed to the best of my ability as to who will be participating. Weighins for this event begin at 4pm and wrestling starts at 5pm. Again, this event is being announced very last minute. PLEASE let me know of any issues I can assist with.
Practice for tomorrow (MLK Day) will be 10am. This will be a strength & conditioning workout likely done around 11:30am. Coach Crace will be in at 6:30-7:30pm for technique. Our practice Wednesday will be 5:30-7:30 as we did last week.
This Saturday is the North Union Invitational. This is a varsity tourney but I hope to get some others in as well. Weighins are generally 8am for this event with wrestling starting at 10am.
The Sally George Invitational is almost here. This home event is our pride and joy. There will be loads of info on this in the coming days.
Sorry for the very lengthy post. I am happy to help with questions. Have a great rest of your day.
1/8 - JV Tourney, Gorman, & on to Licking Heights
Hello. It is hard to believe we are already in the second week of January. We are on a path that has us finishing strong in the most important months. I am excited for what lies ahead.
A HUGE thank you to everyone who helped make the JV tourney a success. Tables ran smooth as silk and the hospitality room received many compliments. It is inspiring to see how much our crew of parents support the athletes. As a program... we are blessed.
Our varsity crew performed well at the JC Gorman invite. Congrats to our placers Daxton (1st), Sam (3rd), Landon & Sean (6th), and Ayden (8th). Additional thank you to Coach Little, Chase, and Crace for holding down the fort so effectively while I was away for the JV event. Again... blessed.
Here's a few notes for the week in front of us.
We have a normal week of practice this week as we prepare for our tourney this weekend. We have guys working hard to fine tune technique, build strength & cardio, and manage weight. This is an important week for our process.
Coach Crace will be in Monday (tonight) and Wednesday evening 6:30-7:30pm for extra training and focused technique. We will finish after school practice a bit early on those days. We have youth wrestling sessions Tuesday and Thursday night if anyone feels compelled to help.
This Saturday is the Licking Heights Invitational. It is held at their new high school at 4101 Summit Road, Pataskala, OH 43062. Weighins for this event begin at an obnoxious 7am. With it being an hour drive, we will need to depart by 5:45am. Please make it a point to get to bed early. At press time it is my intention to bring all wrestlers to this event whether it be as competitors or in a supportive role. This tournament does accept extras to fill 16-man brackets. I will try to get additional athletes in the tournament BUT cannot guarantee success in doing so. I should know by Friday night who is in. Tickets may be purchased online HERE or at the gate at $7 cost.
That is all for now. Do not be shy if you have questions. I am happy to help.
12/29 - Holiday Announcements & Opening of 2024
Hello all. I hope you are enjoying your holiday break. Here’s some updates for the end of 2023 and an eventful start to 2024.
The team has been hit with sickness. This was the rationale for lack of practice on Friday. We will practice Saturday morning (tomorrow) at 10am. Those who are sick are encouraged to stay home as we work to rid the room of illness. PLEASE communicate with me any issues that would cause absence from practice. There are a few that are becoming habitual offenders of this. My phone number continues to be available to all. 740-225-9044. Please do not reply to the Remind account. That is the intended use of that service.
We will have a short optional workout on New Year’s Eve at 1pm. This is intended for those who are in need of extra cardio for weight management. The intent is to give the guys the day off on New Year’s Day. The room can likely be made available to those in need upon request. We will practice at 10am on Tuesday, Jan 2nd.
A huge congrats (and best of luck) to those able to compete at the Brecksville Holiday Tournament. This is an elite tourney and awesome experience. Despite our depleted numbers, the guys wrestled very well and represented PHS with excellence. Additional thank you to those making the trek in support. Shoutout to Mrs. Melodie Little who has been and continues to be a tremendous asset and source of support to the coaches and athletes at events. And to Mr. Jordan Crace for his energy and expertise.
Things get cooking pretty quickly in 2024. After a focused week of practice, the varsity heads to the 61st annual JC Gorman Invite at Mansfield Senior High School. The event begins at 3pm on Friday, Jan 5th at 3pm. Saturday wrestling begins at 10am. Weighins on Friday are at 1pm. In order to comfortably arrive on time, we will depart from Pleasant by 11:30am. Those competing will need to check in with teachers regarding missed class. This will be varsity only.
We are divided on Saturday, Jan 6th. Those competing at the Gorman will depart by bus by 7:30am. Those not competing at the Gorman will be wrestling in our HOME JV tournament. While it is a bit manic to separate teams, the Gorman is a great tourney. It is also a great date for us to host our annual JV event.
Several parents have already stepped up in anticipation of this. I will help in providing resources and network with others for help as well. THANK YOU to all of you in advance for your continued willingness to step up for the program. We are truly blessed.
12/25 - Merry Christmas! Brief Announcements
Merry Christmas! I hope your day has been filled with joy. You all mean a great deal to me. I thank athletes, coaches, and parents for a great start to our season. Things will get even better from here. It is important to prioritize in this thing we call life. Faith, family, then everything else. This includes wrestling. Take the time you need today to unplug and enjoy yourself. We get busy pretty quickly.
Tomorrow we will practice at 10am. Please let me know if there are family commitments that interfere.
We have two events looming.
JV athletes will head to River Valley on 12/27. The event begins at 9am. We are conducting weighins at our wrestling room starting at 7:15am. Shortly thereafter, we will depart for 8am skin checks.
The Brecksville Holiday Invitational is December 29-30. This is an elite tournament. Only some of our squad will be competing. Weighins begin at 8am on Friday, 12/29. We will therefore need to depart by 5:30am. This is bonkers early. Wrestling for the event begins at 10am. We will be using coach transportation (a form will be used for this) and an overnight stay for the event. The cost for hotel will be covered. Here's hotel info.
Holiday Inn Cleveland South-Independence, 6001 Rockside Road, Independence, OH 44131
Tel: 216-524-8050 ~ Fax: 216-524-9280
I will offer up more details for Brecksville as we get closer to it. Additionally... I will use practice time tomorrow to verify which athletes will be participating at RV on 12/27 and Brecksville on 12/29-12/30. Varsity athletes not wrestling at Brecksville will instead wrestle at NU on 1/20/24.
Now... Quit reading this message and get back to your holiday. Eat food. Play your new video games. Model your new clothes. Fall asleep watching football. Then eat leftovers. I will see you tomorrow!
12/17 - Recap, Announcements, & Ho Ho Holidays
Hello everyone. I hope you are all getting good rest after a long few days at the Roughneck Duals. The boys performed admirably against tough competition. With us losing several duals by 3 points or less, we have some work to do for sure. BUT... it also serves as proof that we can battle amongst quality programs across all 3 divisions. Our quest to get better begins tomorrow!
We will have standard after school practice Monday - Wednesday. I realise that the guys do not have school Wednesday but sadly I do. Thus... normal time.
I will likely end practice tomorrow sometime between 4 and 4:15. Mostly focusing on some fine tuning, strength training, and some cardio. A separate technique session will be available tomorrow night at 6:30-7:30pm. If anyone would like to go but cannot due to transportation issues let me know.
This Thursday is a MS / HS dual against Galion. The event will take place at the friendly confines of PHS at 6pm. We will use one mat with the MS competing first followed by the high school. Weighins will be 5pm. The room will be available after school for anyone in need of it. We will begin setup by 4pm. It is my hope to setup some JV matches at this event as well.
An apparel sale has begun. This was already announced via Facebook and the Remind account. In case you need it again, HERE is the link. I am using fundraising money to get the fellas a shirt with choice of hood or no hood. Thank you to our friends at Copper Lane for taking good care of us.
Our coaching staff talked to the athletes after competition on Saturday about the benefits of using our cloud based software called Mat Boss. We use it for video and scoring. BUT it is also an avenue to allow coaches and athletes to rewatch and study matches. If anyone is unable to access this resource, please let either myself or Coach Little know so we can get you setup.
On December 23rd, we will have our early holiday PJ practice with team gift exchange. Wrestlers were sent a link for this. If anyone does not wish to take part, please let me know so I can plan accordingly.
Shortly after holiday, on 12/27 we will showcase our JV athletes at the River Valley JV Invite. Varsity wrestlers will practice in the morning and then head to RV in support. On 12/29-30, some athletes will head to the prestigious Brecksville Holiday invitational. There will be loads of information coming as these events draw closer.
That is all for now. As per usual, reach out with any questions you may have. Truly... it is not a problem.
12/11 - A Good Start
The team is off and running with our season's first competition. The varsity performed very well at Mount Vernon while still leaving some room for improvement. Our JV guys did great at Northmor. Several of the guys were wrestling their 1st tournament. Many achieved their first win! The tournament was abnormally lengthy with tons of time in between matches. I thank parents very much for patience and support.
We enter a very important practice week. Putting in work with drill, troubleshooting noticable shortcommings, and cardio / strength training all in preparation for a big big weekend.
This Friday and Saturday is the Roughneck Duals at the University of Findlay. This is a dual format tournament. Over the course of two days we will wrestle 10 duals against very stiff competition.
The event begins at 2pm on Friday. We weigh in at 12pm. Needless to say, we will be departing school early. It is my intention to leave Pleasant by 10:30am to arrive comfortably to Findlay. Athletes will need to check in with teachers for any missed work.
It is my understanding that we will wrestle 5 duals on Friday and another 5 on Saturday. Weighin for day one is scratch +1. For example, 120 weigh class can weigh in at 121. Athletes will then weigh out Friday evening upon completion of wrestling with another pound.
On Saturday, the team will depart from Pleasant by 7:30am to make it to Findlay for 8:30am. Wrestling begins at 10.
As previous stated, this event is dual format. We will wrestle against other teams in pools. It is my intention to try and find extra matches for JV athletes. However... I cannot guarantee success in doing so.
Wrestling will be held at the Kohler Fitness & Recreation Center. The University of Findlay is located at 1000 N. Main St, Findlay, OH . I am told that seating will be limited and that fans should be encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
This is new for many of you and probably a lot to absorb. Please reach out with any questions.
12/4 - 1st Competition
Hello all. We find ourselves starting our practice week in preparation for our 1st week of competition. Here's some info for the week.
Congrats to our CDWCA All Star participants on a solid representation of our program at the event on Saturday.
We will be holding wrestleoffs today (Monday) and wrap them up as needed tomorrow.
Tomorrow is our official picture day. We will do this after school at 2:45 in the gym. Please expect practice to extend to 5pm due to this interruption. You can get the picture form HERE if one was not obtained from the practice room.
We are gonna divide and conquer this weekend. Our JVs are heading to Northmor for their "Meat & Potatoes" Classic. Our Varsity is going to compete at Mount Vernon for their John Brown Memorial. I generally do not like to split us up like this, but we only have so many good competition dates on the schedule. Wrestlers need sufficient opportunities. .
The Northmor JV event will begin at 10am with a weighin at 8am. To arrive in time, we will need to depart by 7:15am from the wrestling room. The tournament is held in their gym at 7819 State Route 19 Galion, Ohio 44833.
The Mount Vernon event (John Brown Memorial) is held at Energy Field House 101 Yellow Jacket Dr.
For this day of 2 events, the tentative plan is for me to see the varsity off and then head to NM with the jv. Many of these wrestlers have never experienced a live event before. The varsity will be in very capable and trusted hands. I will shoot over to Mount Vernon upon completion of the Northmor tourney.
That is all. With this being our first competition, I welcome you to contact me with any questions and such. I am excited to show these guys off.
11/29 - An Important Week
Hi everyone. This info is a bit late coming out. It has been a bonkers busy week.
The guys are pounding through an important practice week. Some are setting themselves up for alphas (some already did this prior to holiday). Some new guys are building foundation technique. All are continuing as (hopefully) process oriented driven athletes gearing for the start of competition.
Here's some important info!
The intention is to hold wrestleoffs as part of practices Monday and Tuesday to determine starting lineup for our first competition December 9th. This could cause these practices to run a bit longer. I will try and respect your time and keep you all informed.
Tuesday, 12/5 serves as our official picture day. I will hand out forms in practice. You can also download it HERE.
THIS FRIDAY is the second opportunity to conduct alpha assessments. Many already handled this prior to Thanksgiving. Those who did not will do so Friday. We will use Coach transportation for this. Those heading to Marysville for alphas will leave with me about 3pm to assess. Likely to return by 4:15 or so. Those heading to Elgin will leave by 5:30 and return to the room by 6:45. I will likely handle transport for this one as well. Athletes will be given a release form for this. It can also be downloaded HERE.
Saturday is our final scrimmage. This one will be at Marysville High School 8-10am in their large gymnasium. This is an excellent scrimmage with a variety of competition. We will depart Pleasant by 6:45am to arrive for warmup for the scrimmage. Upon completion, I would like to take the guys to lunch! Unless plans fall apart with unforeseen circumstances, we will quickly head to Bob Evans at 1080 Lydia Dr, Marysville, OH 43040. The cost will be taken care of. It will be helpful if the guys can contribute to the tip.
Lastly, also on Saturday... 5 of our athletes will be competing at the Central District All Star Meet at Dublin Jerome High School later in the day. They will be well informed of the schedule of events. Those who would like to attend can purchase tickets HERE.
NOTE as of 11/30
Those conducting alphas must have paperwork! Both for alphas and for transportation.
For Saturday we will very likely leave the scrimmage a tad early to get to lunch. I will drive separately in case the central district guys can get to skin checks in time.
Wear something Pleasantish for scrimmage. Bring stuff for showers.
Wowza! That is a lot. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with questions. I am happy to serve.
11/21 - Quick Important Info
Hi everyone. Tomorrow is a busy and hectic day.
A few quick reminders from today.
Those assessing at Elgin tomorrow morning can meet there at 8am. I will have singlets there to put on for the weigh in. Make sure you have your consent form. Some of you already handled that with the parent meeting. ALSO have a valid ID. Parents are welcome to take athletes to assessments and then home to eat and relax before our scrimmage. Those who do not alpha tomorrow will need to do it on December 1st.
I will be at the room by 6:30am for anyone needing to check weight and / or sweat a bit.
Please refer to the previous announcement post for reminders about the assessments.
IMPORTANT
Those who meet at the wrestling room have to then ride with me or Coach Chase to Elgin. Consent forms were sent home for that today as well. If you lost it (already) you may find it HERE. I need this to transport you from Pleasant to Elgin.
I suspect this is a lot of info at once for our families new to the sport. You are very welcome to call me at 740-225-9044 for clarification on anything.
Scrimmage
Our Bishop Watterson scrimmage starts at 12noon and lasts until about 2pm. We need to meet at the wrestling room for bus departure by 10:30am. You may certainly pack food for the journey if you want. PLEASE bring shower supplies for afterward. Their practice facility is 8500 Warner Road in Plain City.
The boys have been working hard. Alphas are always a tough part of the season. After the holiday things will ease up a bit. This will allow us time to fine tune technique for our new additions, build strength, and enjoy the sport.
11/18 - Terrific Start
Good afternoon. Here's a bit of info on our start to the season.
The team is off and running. Truly a great first two practices. We have a wealth of guys on the team this year. This includes seasoned vets led by very qualified seniors, hungry underclassmen, and a slew of welcome newcomers. It is exciting to see so many guys on the team AND a bunch of kids in the middle school room! This looks to be a great group of wrestlers. It is an exciting time to be a Pleasant wrestler.
The calendar is rather crowded at the start of the season. As many of you are aware, it started a week later than normal. This gave guys a break after fall sports... which is great. But gives us less time prior to Thanksgiving... not so great.
We will have standard after school practice after school on Monday and Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving. Upcoming calendar highlights:
Monday, 11/20 - Parent meeting at 5:30 in room 100 of the new building. I will talk about our handbook a bit but mostly schedule stuff and alpha assessments.
Wednesday, 11/22 - Alpha assessment at Elgin High School. This is for those wishing to assess prior to Thanksgiving. See info about Alphas at the end of this post. Later that day, we have a scrimmage at Bishop Watterson starting at 12 noon. It will be a combined practice session with Watterson and Jonathan Alder. This was listed WRONG on my previous post. For this I apologize. The plan is to depart from the wrestling room via bus at 10:45. We should arrive back home around 3pm or so.
Friday, 12/1 - Alpha option #2. Those wishing to alpha after Thanksgiving will head to Elgin by 6pm.
Saturday, 12/2 - Scrimmage at Marysville High School starting at 8am.
**Here's a bunch of info on Alphas. I will cover it at the parent meeting as well.
In order to test hydration at Elgin, a parent permission form must be completed. I am including that form HERE. There is also an alpha profile sheet HERE. The top portion can be filled out. The rest will be handled on site. These forms are also listed under "links and forms" on this site. I will ALSO have these forms available at the parent meeting Monday. Athletes MUST HAVE an acceptable form of ID with them. Drivers license or school ID will work.
This is a bunch of info. If you have questions don't be shy about contacting me. I am happy to clarify.
11/11 - Almost Here
Hello everyone and Happy Veteran's Day. The 2023-24 wrestling season is almost here. The first official practice is Friday 11/17. We have been rather busy already with optional training and guys coming in on their own. There seems to be an excitement in the air. It seems these guys missed being around each other.
The wrestling room is almost back together. It has been quite the process. The new mat is down and is getting rave reviews.
The website is updated with announcements, schedule, calendar, and now links & forms. Please take time to navigate around. I will try and keep everyone updated on changes as they occur.

10/19 - Opening Wrestling Meeting
Greetings one and all. Wrestling season has almost arrived. Here's information covered at the preseason meeting. There will be much more information posted as the season draws closer.
**Official season start date = Friday, November 17th
MUST HAVE
Final Forms account
EMed, release, and DT form + $$ fee
Concussion form
Physical (get this done NOW)
Lindsay Law form
** If you played a fall sport, you are good to go.
We will begin some off season conditioning next week. This is optional but encouraged especially for those not involved in a fall sport. Conditioning will take the form of mostly cardio and strength training.
NOTE: The wrestling room is only open to small groups currently due to space limitations. We have a new mat curing. Once the room opens up (Nov. 1st) we will include wrestling drills and skills in our preseason plans.
For now, preseason conditioning will take place after school Mondays and Wednesdays until 3:45. We will meet at the visitor side of the track. Since we do not have school this Monday, we will begin on October 25th. Once the wrestling room opens up, we will add Sunday open mats to our schedule.
If you are not plugged in to the REMIND account for wrestling, PLEASE do so. If I have to change the schedule or cancel a preseason workout, this is how the announcement would be made.

10/15 - Season Right Around the Corner!
Hello all.
Here's some early updates and info on the season that is almost here.
After a long process, the wrestling room is taking shape. There's much to be done with walls and organization but the room will be available for some preseason workouts as needed.
Our new practice room mat is arriving Tuesday morning. I may be pulling some wrestlers out of class (briefly) to assist putting this mat in the wrestling room. There will need to be space in the room allocated to allow this mat to cure. A big thanks to everyone who has helped with fundraising efforts recently and in the past. This practice room mat will be a blessing for our daily grind in the practice room.
I will have a wrestling meeting this Thursday during lunch in the theater. There will be a signup form, information on preseason conditioning, and an early look at the season schedule.
Just FYI... OHSAA has moved the official start date for wrestling back a full week this season and beyond. This was done to shorten the season a bit and distance it from the end of football. Wrestling tends to be the longest season of all the high school sports. The start date for wrestling this season will be Friday 11/17. We will have plenty of opportunities for workouts prior to that in preparation for Alpha assessments and December competition.
That is all. Please let me know if you need anything from me.
10/5 - Another Update on Wrestling Room
Hi there.
I have been working rather vigorously on cleaning the floors and underside of the mats in the wrestling room. While the room was torn up it seemed like the opportune time to ensure that the floor and underside of the bottom layer of mat was free of anything that resembled mildew or mold. Mats and equipment has been shifted around to make this cleaning possible.
The plan is to give guys wrestling space by Monday. In order to do this I need help this Sunday at 2pm. We will lay down carpet padding, underlayment (bottom mat) and then move one of our flex rolls from the elementary gym to the wrestling room. There will then be much more work to be done to get the room ready for season but I can handle that. Wrestlers and family are welcome to come. The work needed to be done can happen quickly if enough people show up. I will even put football on the big TV. If you cannot make it please reach out in some way. If most cannot make that time I have flexibility and can alter a bit.
Thanks in advance for your help.
9/22 - Update on Wrestling Room
Hello all. I hope everyone has had a wonderful fall thus far. I will try and keep this short.
The renovations to the bus garage are almost complete. New lighting is installed, new heating, and paint. We are finally able to begin putting the wrestling room back together. This will be a laborious operation. Most of the cleaning and sorting I can handle myself but some stuff will require extra hands. Mats need to get moved and (some of them) deep cleaned. Stuff has to be shuffled around so new carpet padding can be brought in. And other stuff.
I plan to work off and on through the weekend and into next week. It is my hope to get some help on Sunday afternoon for mat shifting, cleaning, etc. I will send out a time later this weekend for specifics. I know everyone is busy. Particularly those playing football. But we really need to get a functional space for our athletes. Some have been asking about open mats. The new season is right around the corner.
Thanks in advance for your help.
8/6 - 2023 Spartan SLAM pt 2
Hello. Thank you to all who have participated in the fundraising up to this point. Several of you have sold above and beyond the required amount. People seem eager to participate. I found 22 teams without any trouble. Once we add the teams found by the athletes we should have quite an event. We have tons of sponsors and quite a few raffle items. We are moving towards what we hope will be a very successful "Spartan Slam" event this Saturday.
FIRST OF ALL...
I need to collect what has been sold. Two teams and 20 raffle tix from each of you wonderful people. Getting stuff turned in will allow me to register teams and establish tee times + track raffle participants. IF YOU NEED MORE TIX please let me know.
I will be at the my classroom (room 100) during the following times for collection of money and ticket stubs:
Wednesday, 8/9 9:30-11am in my classroom (football players can stop in before two-a-day practice.)
Wednesday, 8/9 7:30-9pm in my classroom (football players can stop in after two-a-day practice).
Thursday, 8/10 10-11:30am in elementary gym - open mats also available
If neither of these windows work, please let me know how you want me to collect from you.
Wrestlers... I would like as many of you as possible to have a presence at the event. All of these efforts are being made to benefit the program that you are part of. While I do not need wrestlers there for the entire duration (6 hours), I would very much like each of you to be there at least a few hours. And I would like to spread athlete presence out a bit. With football practice ending at 10am, here is a suggestion for shifts.
10am-12noon - Those who do not play football.
12-2pm - Freshman & Sophomore football players
2-4pm - Junior & Senior football players
The above times are mere suggestions. If you need to come participate at a different time slot just let me know.
I look forward to seeing many of you on Saturday!! Please feel free to reach out if there are questions. Thank you.
7/25 - 2023 Spartan SLAM
Greetings everyone. It is almost time for the Spartan Slam fundraiser. This year's event will take place on August 12th. Again hosted at Paradise Park.
This event will be a putt-putt golf team competition and we intend to hold a raffle to make money for our program.
- Volunteering – Of course, when August 12th rolls around, we will need helping hands. At the event, we will need help for raffle, taking tickets & logging team scores, and wrestlers being visible, kind, and thankful.
Thus far, we have a tremendous showing for hole sponsors. Well over 35 and approaching 40. Thanks so much for the help we have already received. We are still in the process of gathering items to use for the raffle. Our featured prize is a Blackstone flattop grill and a pre-owned Nintendo Switch.
Keep in mind our wrestling room is currently in renovation.
Thursday, July 27th 10am-12pm at Elementary gymnasium. Wrestlers may stay for open mats if desired.
Thursday, July 27th 7-9pm at the new building room 100 (my classroom). This will help football players who would like to simply swing by after practice.
Friday, July 28th, 2-4pm in room 100. Football players can come get tickets before practice if this helps.
I am giving oodles of opportunity to meet up for tickets. But please let me know if none of these windows work. I will happily drop tickets off to your house. I will begin collection of tickets and stubs as the event approaches. Probably a few days prior. Those with questions are certainly welcome to reach me at 740-225-9044.
7/16 - Johnni Dijulius Clinic
Good evening everyone. I hope all of you are having a wonderful summer.
As a reminder, the clinic featuring Johnni Dijulius is Tuesday, July 18th and Wednesday, July 19th at the old high school gym. We have quite a few signed up. Kids from Pleasant and from other schools as well. Here's a quick look at the schedule.
Day 1 (July 18th): Start at 9am-11am, 12pm-2pm, 3pm-5pm {Each session will be between 1.5 to 2 hours long}
Day 2 (July 19th): Start at 9am-11am, 12pm-2pm {Each session will be between 1.5 to 2 hours long}
If you or someone you know would like to attend the clinic please let me know so arrangements can be made.
** I am setting up the gym tomorrow (Monday) night at 8pm. If you are available I would appreciate some help. Mats are already there. They simply need set up.
** We have begun the process of collecting hole sponsors and raffle items for the 2023 Spartan Slam fundraiser on August 12th. If you have ideas you may certainly reach out. There will be a wealth of info released concerning this event in the coming days.
6/19 - Youth Camp
Good evening everyone.
Please do not forget about the PHS Youth Wrestling camp this Wednesday through Friday. See the flyer for reminder of times and such. This camp is hosted by the program and its wrestlers. It is very important that we get as much consistent help from athletes as possible. Make your presence known and show the youngsters how important they are to the program! It should be a rather entertaining time.
The mats are already at Stan Kirby Gymnasium. They just need moved off the stage and rolled out. I could use some help doing this tomorrow (Tuesday) evening at 8pm. I can also use this time to talk to several of you who will have featured roles with camp instruction as well.
**If any of you are unable to attend portions of the camp for whatever the reason, please communicate with me. I look forward to seeing everyone. Thanks in advance.
6/11 - Open Mat Opportunities and Misc.
The work being done in the wrestling room has gotten us off to a late start with open mats. Rest assured that opportunities are available. While work is being done in the bus garage, we are going to put a mat down in the elementary gym. I will need some quick help moving one of our lightweight mats over there sometime middle of this week.
Area teams are using an "anyone is welcome" approach to open mats. Here is a rundown.
Tuesdays - 10am at Elgin or 5pm at North Union
Wednesdays - 2pm at River Valley
Thursdays - 10am at Pleasant
Sundays - 1:30pm at Pleasant
** If you are attending open mats at Elgin, NU, or RV please inform me so I can make every attempt to attend myself. It is always best practice to make sure you have a workout partner attending as well.
** On select Sundays, Jordan Crace will be in to work with guys. Jordan is an accomplished wrestler and technician He will be helping out as much as possible this season.
** As previously mentioned, I could use some help moving one of our lightweight mats to the elementary. I plan to do this sometime Wednesday evening. I will send out a time within the next few days.
** ALSO... If you want to wrestle during a time not listed above, our own space is generally available so long as I am given ample notice.
REMINDER - I need help from high school wrestlers for our youth camp June 21, 22, 23. We will setup mats in Stan Kirby Gymnasium on the evening of June 20th. Mats are already over there.
That is all for now! Enjoy your Sunday.
5/28 - Exciting Changes and Need for HELP
Many of you already know, but we have exciting changes taking place in the wrestling room. BUT it will require some grunt work on our part. The bus garage is receiving upgrades with flooring, new lighting, heating, and fresh paint. This includes our side. This work will begin June 5th.
I need help prepping the space for these upgrades. Mostly, rolling and moving layers of mats out of the way. The first work day will be after school on Wednesday, May 31st. It can then be determined whether we need an additional day. Perhaps over the weekend. I would appreciate all the help I can get. Please let me know if there's major scheduling conflicts I need to work around.
With all the work and movement of things in the bus garage, the wrestling room will be out of commission for awhile. Any efforts for off season workouts will need to take place either off site or in Stan Kirby gymnasium until things are completed and cleaned up. I am more than willing to help make such arrangements. Looking to the future, there's early (and tentative) plans to wrestle a duals event at Ashland Crestview on June 17th if they can get enough teams. Our youth clinic is June 21, 22, and 23rd in Stan Kirby Gymnasium. The Johnni Dijulius wrestling camp is July 18th and 19th. The Spartan Slam is Saturday, August 12th. Much more info will be available for these dates as they approach. Until then... as per usual let me know what you need.
4/6 - Wrestling Banquet
Hello wrestlers & parents! I hope you all had a restful break.
The PHS wrestling banquet is Sunday, April 16th at 6:30pm in the new building. It takes time to get awards and put together videos for the event. ALSO... it was a bit challenging avoiding ball games and track events.
For those bringing a main or side dish, please contact call or text me at 740-225-9044 and let me know what is being brought so we don't double up.
It will be great to see everyone again. Please reach out to me with any questions.
ps - Those of you who have not turned in your wrestling gear... bring it to me asap. Or all you will get at the banquet is nice words, my charm, and a firm handshake.
3/28 - Camp Hosted at PHS!
**PHS will be hosting a camp featuring 4x NCAA D1 National Qualifier and 3x state champ Johnni Dijulius on July 18th and 19th. There will be 5 camp sessions. It is open to our guys (of course) and others outside of PHS if interested. See the flyer below for info on cost and registration. HERE is a link for registration as well. Thanks to Coach Chase for running point on this.
** Info for the camp has already been posted to our team Facebook page. A massive thank you to Coach Little for always doing an amazing job with this page.
**Just an FYI, the plan is to host a grade K-8 youth wrestling camp June 21st-23rd with Pleasant wrestlers helping out. There will be more info on this as it draws closer.
**Be on the lookout for info on our banquet. I am working on awards and potential dates.
3/16/2023 - Off Season Opportunities & NCAA Gathering
Hello everyone.
Just a few things. The boys have initiated an effort to get together at the wrestling room this Saturday evening to watch the finals of the NCAA Wrestling Tournament. I am merely helping see this plan through :) The finals are slated to begin at 6pm so the room shall open by 5:30pm. I figure a few extra Spikeball sets could be a good idea. I will provide water, plates, and napkins + will order pizza. Wrestlers should bring some $ to help curb the cost of said pizza along with any additional snacks (chips, cookies, etc) they may want. This event is optional. I will text wrestlers separately to figure out who is coming. I am happy these weirdos want to get together :)
Some of the fellas have already expressed a desire to put in some wrestling work in the off season. I am attaching some flyers of good opportunities. REMINDER - Wrestlers need to bring gear to me at school asap. This includes singlets, warmup, and pants.
3/14/2023 - State Tourney Aftermath and MORE
Hello everyone.
I want to thank all who made the state tournament weekend a success. Whether competing, coaching, or simply there in support... thanks very much.
Congrats to our OHSAA State Tournament participants Julien Griffith and Daxton Chase. Additional congrats to Dax for his 4th place finish!
**What a season it was! We have much to celebrate. Look for info on a banquet in the near future. Likely to take place just after spring break.
**Don't forget, 3/15 is the final day to order Team Strength shirts. Click HERE for the link.
**I will be busy cleaning the room and putting things away. PLEASE help by bringing in your gear.
Uniform turn in.
Please bring all singlets and warmup (jacket and pants) to school with you and drop it off in my classroom. Have these items in a bag with your name on it. This makes things quite a bit easier on me.
That is all for now. Enjoy your day!
2/26/2023 - Sectionals, Practice Week, and District Info
Hello everyone.
Congrats to everyone for a wildly successful sectional tourney. It has been a while since we have taken such a large group to districts.
Ayden O'Dell - 2nd, Sean Murphy - 4th, Greyson Haycook - 2nd, Chase Van Oosten - 5th, Daxton Chase - 1st, Skyler Wolf - 2nd, Brandon Mulvaine - 2nd, Sam Mentzer - 1st, Sasha Detwiler - 5th, Landon O'Donnell - 3rd, Julien Griffith - 2nd, Luke Flinchbaugh - 4th
Team - Sectional Champs
We are taking 12 athletes to Harrison Central. That is quite a party. As previously mentioned, we will be staying at the Cadiz Inn on 82468 Cadiz-Jewett Road. 740-942-4044. We have rooms reserved at no cost to athletes. We will be using separate transportation for districts. Be on the lookout for forms to be filled out and returned to me.
For our practice week we will be doing some of the same mixed in with some combined practice opportunities. On Monday, we will have a standard after school practice focusing mostly on drill and cardio (we need to stay on top of weight). On Tuesday the plan is to head to Marysville to practice with their qualifiers. So long as it fits our needs, the tentative plan for Wednesday is to head to Galion for a drill practice mixed in with some situational live. Both of these workouts will start at 4pm. We will depart from the wrestling room by 3:15. At press time the plan is to use separate coach-led transportation. Again... look for forms. Thursday's practice will be at home and light dependent on the needs of our athletes.
The district tournament is at Harrison Central High School in Cadiz, OH. This is a sizable trek for sure. I have included the schedule for the event. Brackets can be accessed HERE.
Those participating will be pulled out of school sometime around 9:30 to head to the wrestling room. We will depart from there by 10am so we can comfortably check into our hotel and make it to Harrison for weight check. **If the weather is bad we may depart earlier. I will take care of team meal on Friday night after conclusion of wrestling. The hotel offers a modest free breakfast for Saturday morning.
I believe that is all. Thank you athletes for continued hard work. It is nice to experience success where it matters most. Thank you parents for your patience, flexibility, and support. It can be a tough gig being a wrestling parent. You are all deeply appreciated. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.
2/19 - Here We Go!
Hello everyone. It is time for the postseason!
Congrats to MOAC Champion Daxton Chase, Runner-Ups Brandon Mulvaine & Sam Mentzer (wasn't pinned), 4th Placers Ayden O'Dell, Sasha Detwiler, & Luke Flinchbaugh, 5th Placers Sean Murphy & Landon O'Donnell, and 6th Placers Greyson Haycook, Mason Moore, & Elijiah Miley!
As previously mentioned, sectionals are at Ridgedale this weekend. Wrestling begins at 10am and weighins are at 8am. We should be fine leaving by 7:20am. Those placing top 4 will advance to the district tournament at Harrison Central High School the following weekend. See the previous message for hotel information as needed.
This is a very important week of practice. Some will work hard to stay fit and technically sharp. Others will continue progression off of injury. Since we do not have school, practice tomorrow will begin at 10am. Please be prepared to start at 10 and let me know if you need help with ride situation. Tuesday - Thursday practice will resume normal time after school until 4:30. Friday practice will finish by 4pm. Athletes need to work hard this week to be responsible with weight. This is the sectional tournament. No room for mistakes. I will be very tuned in to weigh ins and weigh out this week as we head into the postseason. Those in need of additional cardio can opt to stay after practice anytime this week.
After a long (and often challenging) season, I am excited to finally unleash this group upon division III. Reach out to me with any questions. As per usual, thank you for all you do as parents and athletes.
2/13 - MOAC Challenge & MOAC Tournament
Greetings wrestlers and families. I hope you are enjoying Super Bowl Sunday. Here's a run down for the week ahead.
The Marion County Double Dual was a very fun evening. Thank you to all who came in support!
The annual Pleasant Wrestling "MOAC Challenge" team competition continues through the middle of this week. There will be a few events at practice tomorrow. Then laser tag after practice Tuesday. It will finish with trivia after practice on Wednesday. Please arrange for pickup Wednesday at 5:15.
We will be working hard at practice this week in preparation for the MOAC Tournament Saturday. The event is at Galion with an 8am weighin and 10am start time. Tickets will be online only through Hometown Ticketing. More info will be available on that as the event draws closer.
**Our sectional tournament is confirmed to be at Ridgedale on 2/25. The draw took place today.
**For those who qualify, districts will be held at Harrison Central High School March 3rd and 4th. I am including information on the hotel below.
Cadiz Inn
82468 Cadiz-Jewett Road / Cadiz OH 43907
PHONE = 740-942-4044
We have a lot to be excited about as we move closer to returning to health. The days ahead will be used to help maximize the team mentally and physically for the stretch run.
That is all! Reach out if you have questions.
2/5 - Loooong Trip, County Super Tri, and MOAC Challenge
Hello all. Here's a rundown for the week. It will be brief (I think).
**The trek to Barnesville was lengthy for sure. Thank you to all who were able to make the trip. Thank you to the athletes for the time of hard work and fellowship. We wrestled rather well against Harrison Central but came up short vs Barnesville. Showed growth in some areas but left some room for improvement. With only a few events remaining, we will look to get as close as we can to full strength and make a post season run.
**Practice this week will begin no earlier than 2:45. This will allow more time for athletes to see the trainer as needed. Expect practice to go a bit longer then. Likely over between 4:30-4:45.
**This Wednesday is the Marion County Super Tri. It is at HOME and will also serve as our senior night. We will setup after school likely starting around 3:15 or so. We will weigh in at 5pm and begin wrestling at 6pm. The event will take place as follows:
Round 1 - Pleasant vs River Valley Elgin vs Harding
Senior recognition
Round 2 - championship dual & consolation dual
It should be an exciting evening of wrestling.
**At press time, there isn't a scheduled event for this weekend. We will use the time to heal up as we move toward the MOAC Tournament on 2/18. Toward the end of the week we will begin our annual MOAC Challenge team competition with the draft being on Thursday.
**It is hard to believe that this is already the second week of February. Let's make every moment count. Please let me know if you have any needs. I am always happy to help. Enjoy the remainder of your Sunday.
Sally Aftermath & Updates
Hello everyone. As you can see... we have a transition to a new website. Google Classic Sites is going bye bye so I will do a phase migration from the classic site to this new one. On the homepage you will see basics such as announcements, calendar, handbook, and schedule. This is functional for now but a work in progress.
** The Sally was a huge success. This doesn't happen without our wrestling community. A massive thank you to those who donated their time and resources in support of our athletes. It is inspiring to me to see how much dedication our parents have to the kids and program. Thank you to wrestling moms for making all other hospitality rooms in the state look bad. There were many great comments about ours. Thank you to Eric O'Dell, Tim Haycook, and Chad Wolf for helping mount the spotlight. Thank you Dean Mentzer, Steve Chase, Ty Barlow, Eric O'Dell, and Matt Young for helping with weighins and outs. Thank You coaches for supporting our guys. To David Little for design work. The razzle dazzle and production value of our finals is second to none. To Bob Cunningham for tireless hours as trainer. To Gerald Smith for running point on brackets, seeding, and announcements. Again... many compliments from others. AND many thanks to other unsung heroes of the event. The Sally remains one of best tournaments around.
** Although we suffered some early setbacks, the team finished strong and earn 3rd place out of 24. We have more to work on AND we are not completely healthy. Congrats to champs Brandon Mulvaine (also 100 wins) and Daxton Chase. Additionally... Congrats to runner-ups Sam Mentzer and Jaden Griffith. To Skyler Wolf (4th) and Mason Moore (6th). Others earned important wins. The Sally proved to be as tough as it has been in years.
** TOMORROW AFTER SCHOOL we will put the wrestling room back together and clean up. Wrestlers will divide and conquer to move mats, risers, podium, etc. This will eat up some important practice time so plan to practice until 5ish.
** This Wednesday we travel to Ashland Crestview for a tri event. Middle school will travel with us. The event begins at 6 with a 5pm weigh in. We will look to depart by 3:45. It is my hope that jv and varsity B athletes can get some matches as well. This cannot be guaranteed though.
** This Saturday is state dual districts. We earned the right to attend. Before officially announced it was declared as being the "Coshocton District." That is why it says Coshocton on the schedule. The event is actually at Barnesville. They were declared the top seed of the event and therefore granted hosting rights. Unfortunately... this creates a long drive for us. With a weighin at 8:30am, we will need to leave by 6am for the event. Bring pillows and sleep on the way. We will wrestle Harrison Central first and then Barnesville if we win.
** As February approaches, we enter the home stretch of the season. That is tough to believe. Let's relish the moment and enjoy the the competition and fellowship. I am open to whatever questions you may have.
