"If brains can change in three weeks, imagine what can happen in a year of math class if students are given the right math materials and receive positive messages about their potential and ability." —Jo Boaler, Stanford Professor of Mathematics Education in Anyone Can Learn to the Highest Levels
I believe in the message above, based on the numerous published research studies in mathematics education and neuroscience, and my own experiences. Therefore, after a career in the software and high tech industries, I decided to focus on helping students to learn math and develop a mathematical way of thinking. I am glad to be a part of students' learning journey here at Amador Valley High School.
I earned a B.A. in Physics from Johns Hopkins University. From the University of Florida, I earned a M.S. in Physics, M.S. in Teaching and completed all Ph.D. coursework in Physics. To help young adults build skills—such as in communication, negotiation, team building, and other life skills necessary for success—I developed and taught leadership programs for middle and high school students, YOUth LEAD. At Amador Valley High School, our curriculum and texts upon which our mathematics courses are based rely on excellent teamwork and collaboration. These skills, which are so critical for life and workplace, success are also come in handy for learning math at the deepest, conceptual levels.
I look forward to a productive and educational year. Please feel free to contact me any time. Thank you for the privelege of being able to work together with you this year and beyond.
