How much homework will my child receive?
Although student work rates vary in the 5th grade, each child should be spending between 45 and 60 minutes on HW each night. This can include silent reading, studying for tests or working on current event reports.
Is homework ever assigned over the weekend?
The Friday homework assignment each week is for your child to review his/her HW book with you and obtain your full signature at the bottom of the Friday section. Some students prefer to study for tests or complete their independent reading over the weekend.
How will I receive progress about my child?
The homework book provides instant feedback to see if your child handed in his/her HW for that day (a stamp indicates full credit). Chapter tests are to be signed by a parent at the end of each unit.
How can I help my child at home?
Read, read, read. Reading with or to your child is an excellent way to help promote both fluency and comprehension. Also, ask to see your child's homework when he/she is finished, is it neat/correct? Help pace your child's current event report and look for news articles together.
Make sure your child has a plan to select and ready the monthly book project books. Books can be selected at school (Mr. Maloney has boxes for each genre), but some students need to make a trip to the public library.
If my child is absent, how much time does he/she get to complete missed work?
For each day missed due to an absence, a student gets the same number of days to complete the missed work. For example, if a child is absent on Monday and Tuesday, that student would get 2 days (Wed. and Thur.) to complete the work and it would be due on Friday.
