My name in Lisa Doherty, but kids call me Mrs D. I am so excited to be the school counselor here at Vintage Hills Elementary School. I have been in PUSD for the past seven years and prior to that I was in San Ramon where I worked at as both a middle and high school counselor.
I studied Psychology at Cal State East Bay and received my Masters in Counseling and PPS Credential from St. Mary's College. My husband Chris, teaches at California High School in San Ramon, where we first meet. We have been married for over 25 years and have three wonderful children; Jack, Zoey, and Sofia all of whom are in college pursuing exciting goals. I love cooking and gardening and spending time with my family. Some of our favorite things to do is to go to the beach, Disneyland, or go on adventurous hikes. We all love living a healthy lifestyle starting with food, exercise, and sunshine. I am grateful for all my blessings.
A school counselor is another resource or support person that can help your child be successful at school. All students have an opportunity to benefit from my services through monthly classroom presentations and lunchtime activities. I work closely with classroom teachers to connect with those students who may need a little extra support.
PUSD elementary counselors developed a Master Counseling Plan that aligns with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) national model for school counseling framework. Our Master Counseling Plan includes three lessons per grade level that address three ASCA domains: School to Career, Academic Success, and Social & Emotional Learning. Click here to learn more about what presentations are covered in each grade level.
In addition to the above lessons, I offer other school-wide presentations that can be developed specific to a classroom or grade level need, as well as character traits and life skills. Click here to see some of the topics presented.
If you have any concerns or questions about the counseling lessons or material presented through these lessons, please do not hesitate to email or call me so we can talk further. I believe the most important relationship a child has is with their parents and therefore, I hope to foster that relationship in ever way possible. Communication is vital.
Students are selected for groups based on need and referral. While teachers and administration most commonly make those referrals for group, parents may refer their student as well.
Small groups consist of ~ 4-6 students, typically in the same grade. Groups meet for 30 minutes once a week during Go Time. Now new material or instruction will be missed.
Groups are designed to build skills that a student will need to be successful in the classroom and beyond.
Typically groups meet once a week for 30 minutes and run for 8-10 weeks during the school day. Most group offerings will focus on building confidence, self-esteem, and friendship skills. Additional topics may include grief, family changes, social skills, and managing emotions. If you feel your child may benefit from some small group counseling please reach out to their classroom teacher or email me directly so we can expolre this service.
School counseling is not therapy and should not take the place of outside support. However, occasionally students may have a personal or a very specific problem that is interfering with their ability to focus and learn. If the presenting issue is distracting them or impacting their ability to be successful in the classroom then we may want to set up a few (~ 4-5) meetings, to work on some coping skills or strategies that might help mediate the problem. Grief (such as the loss of a pet or loved one), changes in the home (such as divorce or separation), or generalized anxiety, are a few topics that might require short term, solution focused counseling. These counseling meetings would occur once a week, for ~15-20 min arranged at a time that does not impact classroom instruction. If you feel your child may be going through something that is impacting them here at school. please feel free to reach out via email of phone. I am happy to set up an in person or virtual meeting to discuss this further.
