The Hart Middle School Choir Program is centered around music and community. Students will study and perform a wide range of music from different styles, cultures, and time periods. They will engage in various activities and projects to develop their musicianship skills, grow as music producers and songwriters, and as scholars of music and music-adjacent studies. Choir is a highly collaborative learning environment. Students learn and practice team working skills through ensemble performance and group projects. The result is not only lots of music, but a loving and friendly community where students feel respected and safe to be themselves and to create and express freely.
Program highlights:
Concert and pop-up performances throughout the year
Trips, to places such as Great America and Disneyland
Music production, recording, and songwriting using Soundtrap
Guest artists, speakers, and clinicians from around the music industry
About the Director
About the Director
Andrew Lu is a musician and educator from Palo Alto, CA. He began playing piano at age 4 and joined the school band on flute at age 10. Andrew graduated with highest honors in May 2019 from University of the Pacific with a B.M. Music Education degree with an Instrumental concentration, where he also studied composition with Robert Coburn, and conducting with Eric Hammer and Peter Witte.
As a vocalist, Andrew has performed with the University of the Pacific Choirs, and sang in Flagship Quartet, an award-winning barbershop quartet. He served as the Choral Assistant at the Stockton Youth Chorale for two years. As an active conductor in the Pacific Conservatory community, he led performances with many of the University's performing ensembles, and also premiered several student compositions. Outside of the Conservatory, Andrew has conducted and music directed musical theatre productions with PEP and A Theatre Near U.
Mr. Lu teaches band and choir at Hart. He also serves as the board president of Ninth Planet, a new music organization based in San Francisco.
