Working with students each day is truly inspirational. My goal for every class is to create a community of engaged learners so students can discover their own strengths. Together, a great team learns how to respect and embrace diversity and the gifts that each individual brings to the table.
Respect is the only "agreement" that drives my classroom.

I’m actually in my 26th year of teaching, so the essay grading has gone way up! I really do love traveling, hiking, cooking, reading, and watching movies. When I say "6" dogs, I mean 6 in my lifetime -- and I'm pretty old, so it's not really that crazy!

My beautiful family includes three kids: two sons and one daughter. (The second son and only daughter are twins.) My husband and I have been married for over 20 years and met in Qingdao, China in 1998. Now the kids are much older. The oldest is in college, and the twins are sophomores in high school. It's cliche, but time truly does fly.

I love animals. As you can see from the photo above, my dog goes everywhere with us. She's been on many camping and ski trips, including the coast of Oregon -- one of our favorite destinations. We have a new challenge because we’ve added a kitten to the mix who was born in April 2020 and doesn’t like to be left alone.
He is our little, unexpected rescue.

One of my favorite books is The Water Dancer, by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Like, Rudolfo Anaya, he uses mysticism, almost poetry, to offer insight into the human spirit and its pull toward justice and survival. Amy Tan said that fiction is often just as real as everyday life because it gets to the heart of the matter and lingers in memory as truth. This summer I read a little bit of everything, including some great novels on my "Must Read" list. I love sharing books with my classes and finding out what my students are reading.

I've travelled many places, but by far the most memorable was to the base camp of Mt. Everest on the Tibetan plateau. I hiked there for two months and met some incredible people. If my suspicions are correct, much has changed since 1994, and I'm not sure I could ever really go back. So, it too lingers in memory as a near- perfect experience.
