Our Barry’d Treasures school store was created in an effort to promote school spirit and pride while fostering a cohesive new school identity as we opened Barry Elementary School in August 2023. Students applied to be a part of the Barry’d Treasures Student Leadership Team. The younger students work during our monthly leadership team meetings. They assist with advertising and product development. The older students on the team, in addition to working during leadership team meetings, are also offered the opportunity to work at the school store. Student store employee responsibilities include store sales, market research, advertising, and product development. The store is open before school from 8:30am to 8:45am. Students are scheduled to work one to two shifts per week. To work at the store, students are expected to follow the Barry’d Treasures code of conduct. Students agree to good attendance, to use appropriate behavior and language at all times, to follow school rules, and to be respectful of staff and fellow students.
The students have far exceeded our expectations! The employees have demonstrated great pride and ownership in promoting our store. They have been responsible with handling money and store products and have been invaluable in developing new products for sale at the store. They have also been so patient and helpful with the younger student shoppers when helping them determine what they are able to purchase with their money and with the younger members of the Barry’d Treasures leadership team during team meetings.
The school store implements many of the habits our students learn during their Leader in Me journey that focuses on equipping students with the leadership and life skills needed to thrive in a dynamic world. Skills such as being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, putting first things first, thinking win-win, seeking first to understand and then to be understood, and synergizing are all traits that the students use on a regular basis at the Barry’d Treasures school store and student leadership team.
The Barry’d Treasures store would not have been possible without the following:
Thank you to the Barry Elementary administration for their endless support and belief in the vision of Barry’d Treasures.
Thank you to the student team members who have turned the vision of a student led school store into a reality beyond our imaginations!
