Plant Selection
Native Plants
Choosing native plants for your landscape has many benefits over using alien species and cultivars. Natives are well-adapted to our climate and soil conditions and tend to be more resistant to extreme conditions, pests, and diseases. Once established, they typically require little attention to watering, feeding, and pruning and are ecologically-beneficial to local wildlife such as bees, butterflies, and birds. Plantscapes keeps close tabs on the best sources of native plants and some local garden centers are also beginning to offer a limited selection of native items. There are numerous native plant options for every landscape, and we can help select and source the best plants for your situation. Working together, we can restore natural habitats in New England one property at a time.
Critter-resistant Plants
It can be very frustrating and costly to plant the latest variety from your local nursery, only to have it attacked by deer, rabbits, or voles. No plant is entirely critter-proof, but many species have developed defenses against herbivore damage or bounce back quickly from being browsed. By selecting more critter-resistant plants, you will have less need for expensive repellents and other deterrents.
Specimen Plants
There are numerous native and introduced trees, shrubs, and perennials with highly ornamental qualities that are useful for focal points, accents, and adding year-round interest in the landscape. Plantscapes keeps an eye out for these special plants as we travel around to various nurseries and can help you select ones that are right for your situation.
