Specialty Gardens
For Pollinators
Insect populations are being devastated by the overuse of pesticides and by habitat destruction. This loss of biodiversity is tragic, but even more critical is the fact that our food supply is dependent on healthy pollinator populations. By making wiser plant choices in the landscape (see Lawn Replacement), we can give an assist to struggling pollinators.
For Butterflies
Butterflies add a whole other dimension to the garden. By providing the right host plants for caterpillars and high-quality nectar sources for butterflies, you can attract a wide array of fluttering friends (and their comical caterpillars) to your yard from spring through fall.
For Birds
Like butterflies and bumble bees, birds can become an important aesthetic element in your landscape if you provide them with food, water, and shelter. Including understory species in your plantings, choosing native plants that support an ample supply of insects for food, and designing for a succession of seeds, nuts, and berries throughout the seasons will ensure that many different birds will visit and make a home on your property.
For All of the Senses
Good landscapes do much more than stimulate visual interest. They are also experienced through sound, touch, smell, and taste. Experiencing a rich sensory plantscape is emotionally beneficial, which is why they are being included in many hospitals, nursing homes, and public areas, and they also encourage ongoing observation, exploration, and education.
For Veggies
One of life's great pleasures is preparing a meal with fresh-picked vegetables, fruits, and herbs from the produce garden. Plantscapes can help with siting and design of the garden and provide guidance on fertilization and irrigation as well as tips for critter control and low-impact integrated pest management. We can show you how to attract beneficial insects and birds and how to start your favorite seeds indoors. Produce gardening is a wonderful family activity that instills an appreciation of the outdoors and natural systems and teaches many important life skills.
