Outdoor Plantscapes

Design Process

Our collaboration with the client begins with an on-site consultation, which is essential to establish the parameters of a project. At the next stage, drawings will be prepared and discussed that envision project features and plantings. Finally, a detailed plan will be constructed including plant lists and sourcing options, installation maps and schedules, and maintenance recommendations. Since all landscapes are dynamic in nature, the client may request that we revisit the project over time to make further enhancements. At each stage of the design process, use our Request a Quote form to contact us about the service you desire.

On-site Consultation

A Plantscapes design is initiated with a site visit, which includes scouting the property for invasives and existing plantings of value; assessing the topography, soil, moisture, and light conditions; determining internal and external views of the property and its neighborhood; and discussing land use, project goals, budget, and time frames. The consultation culminates in a sketch of the property and a report on how to improve its ecological, use, and aesthetic values.

Drawings

After the initial site visit, clients may request drawings to be made based on our discussion during the consultation. Scale drawings will include alien/invasive plants to be removed, valuable plantings to be retained, and suggestions for new features and plantings to enhance the landscape. Further consultations and drawings may be requested until the client is satisfied with the design. Copies of drawings will be provided to the client at each stage of the process.

Installation Plan

As noted on the previous page, Plantscapes does not do landscape architecture or installations. However, we will, upon request, prepare a detailed installation plan for our clients that can be used by the client themselves, community volunteers, your landscaper of choice, etc. The plan will be composed of plant lists including specific plant selections, quantities, and sources; scaled installation maps noting the location and spacing of selected plants; a suggested timeline for plantings; and recommended establishment and maintenance practices for the installation. You may also request to have us present during installation to supervise execution of the plan.

Follow-up

Plantscapes views the project as a collaboration with the client on native ecosystem restoration that may extend over many years. Clients may request at any time for us to revisit a project to discuss any issues, recommend modifications, provide maintenance advice, or suggest some of the innumerable ways to enjoy the natural habitat you have created in your backyard, business environment, or community space.
