Student Application

Application and  Resume are due on April 15, 2024.  2 References are due by April 30, 2024 .

Plano Youth Leadership accepts applications in the spring for the following year’s program. Students who are currently enrolled in the 9th grade are eligible to apply for the following-year class if they reside in the city limits of Plano or are served by PISD, whether attending public school (PISD or non-PISD), private school, or home school.

Each application goes through a rigorous selection process, and thirty-six students--making up a cross section of the community--are selected to participate. Students attend a total of nine monthly sessions beginning with the ropes course and wrapping up with graduation. The first two sessions are mandatory; absence from either of the first two sessions will result in immediate dismissal from Plano Youth Leadership. More than two absences in any of the other sessions may lead to dismissal from the program. Below is a tentative student calendar.

Attendance and Meeting Dates

Be sure that you can arrange your schedule around these dates if you would like to participate in PYL.

*Students are required to attend all sessions. The first two sessions are mandatory; absence from either of the first two sessions will result in immediate dismissal from Plano Youth Leadership. More than two absences in any of the other sessions may lead to dismissal from the program. 

*Session #1: Team Challenge - Saturday, September 7th 2024; 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM 

*Session #2: Getting Started and Role of Personality in Leadership - Sunday, October 6th 2024; 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM 

  Session #3: Exploring Effective Leadership - Thursday, November 7th 2024; 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

  Session #4: Creating Your Brand - Thursday, December 5th 2024; 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM 

  Session #5: Cultural Intelligence - Thursday, January 16th 2025; 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM 

  Session #6: Caring for Our Community - Thursday, February 6th 2025; 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM 

  Session #7: My Rights and Responsibilities as a Leader - Thursday, March 6th 2025; 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM 

  Session #8: My Decisions Reflect on Me - Friday, April 10th 2025; 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM 

  Session #9: Graduation – Leadership for a Lifetime - Sunday, May 4th 2025; 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM 

Additional information will be required by students who are selected.

References

As part of the application, you must have 2 references. 

At least ONE REFFERENCE must be from a past or present educator such as a teacher, counselor, or coach. 

The SECOND reference may be from an adult friend or neighbor, or someone you’ve worked with in a volunteer setting or faith organization.

The references must be submitted by the person writing the reference. 

You may submit your application before your references are complete.

You may email the link to the References page to your references. They will find the form to submit their responses directly to Plano Youth Leadership.

If we receive more than two references on your behalf, the selection committee will only consider the first two received.
