As a 4th grade student in Connecticut, each student is required to complete the "Third Generation" Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment. Each child will continue to be tested in fitness through 10th grade in Connecticut. Each year students' scores are gathered and collected into a district data base. Every other year (4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th grade) students scores are anonymously reported to the state of Connecticut's Department of Education.
As part of our district wide goal to improve fitness scores in Plainville, we track and review student progress each year on the fitness test. A student’s performance is based on standards set by the state and vary by the age and gender of the student. Wheeler School Students in grades four and five will complete the fitness test in physical education class in the spring. Additionally, Grade Individual scores will be sent home with the student before the winter holiday break. The hope is that parents can review this information with their child. Please take the time to review your children's scores with them. There are a number of ways a student can improve their scores in each of the four areas tested. Ask you student what some of these activities are, as they have been discussed in class. If you would like some more ideas please check out my page dedicated to "Physical Activity Outside of Physical Education". Hopefully through a partnership with parents and the school we can work together to improve not only our school’s fitness scores, but the overall health and fitness of the Wheeler students.
