Primary Source Assignment
The Primary Source Assignment is worth 1.5 minor grade.
Good readers seek information to support their understanding of what they read. In this assignment, you will find two primary sources to support your understanding of The House on Mango Street. Primary sources are documents, images, or artifacts that provide firsthand testimony or direct evidence concerning aspects (topics, events, places, etc.) of the story. Think about what might be helpful to further your understanding of the text, imagining the setting, and/or relating to the character to drive your search for primary sources. Consider the historical context the book was written in, cultural issues of the time period the story was written, where the story took place, and/or the author of the text. For each source write one paragraph and explain how the primary source supports the reader's understanding of The House on Mango Street. Your paragraphs must follow the RACER format:
Restate and Answer: Thesis Statement (How does the primary source support the reader's understanding of the book?)
Cite Text Evidence (For example... Find specific evidence from the text that relates to the primary source. MUST include intext citation.)
Explain how the text evidence relates to the claim (What does the primary source reveal about the evidence you have given?)
Cite Text Evidence
Explain
Restate your thesis statement in a fresh way to conclude your paragraph.
For example, this is a primary source that is available in the back of your book:
