Dual Credit FAQ
Dual Credit FAQ
How do I pay for the course?
Pay online through VU-X. Log in with the username and password received in an email from VU. Find the Student Account square. Click Statement & Billing and scroll down a little. Click the button to Make A Payment.
Or you can pay by phone by calling the bursar's office.
How much does the Dual Credit course cost?
Each 1-semester course has a registration fee of $75. Most students take College Algebra in the fall and then Trigonometry in the spring. This is considered two separate courses, so you pay $75 for the fall course and another $75 for the spring course. Students who also choose to take Finite Math will pay another $75.
When is payment due?
It depends on when VU processes your registration. Payment for fall courses is usually due around September 15. Payment for spring courses is usually due around February 15. You won't show a balance until after they process the registration, so if you see a balance of $0, please check back again in a few days.
What if I get free/reduced lunch?
You shouldn't have to pay, but there is a hoop you must jump through. You MUST release your information to VU. Your free/reduced information is confidential. You MUST complete and return the release form to PHS by 8/22. You should have received this form with an email from PHS announcing your acceptance to the National Lunch Program. Without this release form, we are not legally allowed to share this information with VU. If VU doesn't know you get free/reduced lunch, you will be billed the full amount.
What happens if I don't pay?
Failure to pay the course fee will result in a 'hold' on your transcript. This will prevent credits from transferring and will also prevent you from registering for other dual credit courses through VU. Also, VU has been known to take people to collections.
Do I have to take the course for dual credit?
No. Most students do, but you might decide it isn't worth the cost in your situation. Also, students that don't meet the pre-requisites won't be allowed by VU to earn dual credit. Students who aren't taking the course for dual credit will stay in my class and earn regular high school credit. Course materials and policies will be the same for both groups of students. The only difference is that dual credit is grade-weighted and regular is not.
Are the pre-requisites for dual credit?
Yes. Students must have a 2.7 GPA (unweighted) and have earned at least a B- to take any of the 3 dual credit courses. Otherwise, students can take a placement exam called the Accuplacer. Scoring at least 255 on this exam (by 8/29) will qualify you for dual credit. To take Trigonometry in the spring, students must also pass College Algebra with a C- or better.
How do the credits transfer to the college I'll be attending?
It depends on the college. Some colleges count 3 hours or credit and the grade earned. Others only count the hours, but not the grade. For most Indiana colleges, you can check the Indiana Core Transfer Library. Find the box for CTL Name and type "Algebra, College" or "Trigonometry" or "Finite". Scroll through the table to find your school, and look for a Course Number corresponding to your school. If you see "Course Not Taught", that generally means the school will accept CREDIT for the course as a general elective, but not the grade. If you see a Course Number like MA153 or M-118, then you should get credit for that course AND the grade earned with me. If you don't see your school in the table or you want to make sure, I would recommend you contact the school to verify how they'll count the credit.
Can I drop dual credit?
Yes, but notice the following deadlines.
Deadline 8/28 - The last day to drop without penalty. The course won't show on your transcript and you won't be billed.
Deadline 10/3 - The last day to drop without a "W" (withdrawal). The course won't show on your transcript, but you are billed $75 for the course.
Deadline 11/3 - The last day to drop. You will receive a "W" on your transcript and will be billed $75 for the course.
