You can sign up for just one time slot or multiple time slots, and you will receive 1 hours of tutoring time for each time you are present! We have a bus at 3:45pm for those residing in the city. Unfortunately there is no Parkway bus at 3:45pm so you will have to provide your own transportation home if you live in the Parkway area.

Peer Mentoring at Southwest Middle School Mrs. Ana Konyk is a special education teacher at SWM. Last year, Mrs. Konyk and Mrs. Roach piloted a Peer Mentoring partnership between my SWM students and SHS students who were looking for service hours. For the middle schoolers, the partnership was *highly* beneficial. They loved getting to interact with positive peer role models, were more motivated to come to class knowing they would get to have Peer Mentor time, and the 8th graders felt much better about high school after getting to talk with their high school friends. Mrs. Konyk primarily work with students with social, emotional, and behavioral needs, so this was HUGE. They typically struggle with positive social interactions, feeling like they belong, and high levels of anxiety.
While SWM will take as much of your time as you have to offer, they are really looking for students who can come at *least* once a month at a consistent time to build relationships. If you sign up to do this, you would come over to the middle school during AcLab or after school Tuesday-Friday (since the middle school goes until 3:15). You would be working to form positive relationships, help middle school students with homework, and answer questions about high school.
What High School Students may be asked to do during Peer Mentoring:
Academic Needs:
Missing Work Completion: helping students check grades and missing assignments, helping students navigate Infinite Campus and Schoology to find missing work, tutoring students on the missing work
Homework Help: helping students check and fill in planners, tutoring students on homework
Positive Mindset: SHS students may be asked to work with SWM students on a journal that guides them through prompts helping them think about their own strengths and future planning.
Relational Needs:
Relationship Building: one-on-one games (board games, card games, get-to-know-you games), walking and talking (inside or outside, at teacher discretion), activities provided by teacher or social worker
Questions about High School: at SWM teacher or student prompting, SWM students may have questions about high school (discipline, attendance, grading, homework, scheduling, etc.)
If interested, please email Mrs. Konyk by September 13th: akonyk@parkwayschools.net
