THINGS TO DO IN ATLANTA
Beethoven Project: Symphonies 4 + 7 | Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
In just over 30 years, Ludwig van Beethoven produced works that shattered norms and became the North Star for generations of composers. This week, Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in the magnificent Seventh, a piece that bristles with bounding exuberance and rustic charm yet shimmers with a kind of unfathomable genius. Hear the Seventh Symphony paired with the electric energy of the Fourth Symphony, a piece that Hector Berlioz admired for its contrasts between a "lively, alert, and joyful" spirit and a "heavenly gentleness."

Bust (world premiere) | Alliance Theatre
It’s not only hell that breaks loose in this ground-breaking, form-defying, laugh-out-loud new drama from Pulitzer-Prize finalist playwright Zora Howard. Retta and Reggie are enjoying their usual evening on the porch when a longtime neighbor is pulled over by the police just before turning into his driveway. Everything goes as expected—until the unexpected happens. Humor, spectacle, and surrealism converge in this gripping interrogation of what it costs to be Black and free. Lileana Blain-Cruz, a “master of curating chaos” (The New York Times), directs.

The African Company Presents Richard III | Atlanta Shakespeare (dinner & performance)
Presented by Carlyle Brown
Based on a true story. Forty years before the abolition of slavery, William Henry Brown, a free Black American, organizes a production of Shakespeare’s Richard III under his company, African Grove Theatre. At the same time, the leading producer of New York City, Stephen Price, has secured the famous English actor Junius Brutus Booth to play Richard III at his Park Theatre. Threatened by the potential success of Brown’s Richard III, Price is intent on shutting them down. While Brown fights to get his production to opening night, he must also contend with his company of African American actors who aren’t sure of their place in English drama, or if they’re even prepared for the consequences of presenting Shakespeare in their own way.
