RESEARCH
READING SKILL & DEVELOPMENT
We use artificial orthographies to tease apart the influence of linguistic and visual factors on neuroplasticity induced by literacy.
We study how the neural circuits for early decoding and visual word learning differ in individuals with dyslexia and/or ADHD.
We apply what we have learned by testing the efficacy of a non-traditional reading intervention for 4th-6th graders.
MATHEMATICAL COGNITION
We identify brain regions that support different aspects of numeracy (approximation, calculation, transcoding, ordinality).
We track the emergence of math skill in children and relate it to neural changes in the representation of numerical concepts.
We examine how blindness and expertise with braille affect the organization of the brain for mathematical cognition.
SPEECH & LANGUAGE
We probe the hidden mechanisms of inner speech and its role in keeping information in working memory.
We map the brain regions that work together to allow us to identify the printed form, pronunciation, and meaning of words.
We test whether certain kinds of math skills depend upon verbal codes provided by the language system.
Cerebellum
We believe that the cerebellum is a learning machine that uses error signals to drive supervised learning in the cerebral cortex.
We delineate how cerebellar damage in adulthood impacts the learning of cognitive skills through trial-and-error.
We investigate whether lexical-level representations provide the information needed to supervise cerebellar learning processes.
BASAL GANGLIA
We believe reward prediction error signals that drive reinforcement-based learning crucially involve the basal ganglia.
We explore the impact of Parkinson's disease on learning through reward and punishment outcomes.
We characterize the temporal dynamics of neuronal activity in the basal ganglia in relation to computational models of speech production.
