CREATE>THINK>SOLVE>PREPARE
After 25 years in education, I’ve learned that teaching is about much more than covering a curriculum or preparing students for a test. My goal is to prepare students for life beyond the classroom.
I believe students learn best when they are given a reason to care about what they are learning. Whether they are designing a logo, creating a video, building a 3D model, managing a budget, studying business law, or learning accounting, I want students to understand that the skills they are developing have a purpose beyond a grade.
My classroom is a place where students create, experiment, make mistakes, solve problems, and try again.
I have taught a wide range of subjects throughout my career, including Graphic Design, AV Production, 3D Modeling, Digital Media, BIMM, Business Law, Accounting, and Personal Finance. Although these subjects may seem very different, they all share one important connection: they teach students how to think, create, communicate, and make decisions.
I believe in giving students opportunities to learn by doing. A student may not remember every definition from a textbook, but they are much more likely to remember the experience of creating something, solving a difficult problem, managing a project, presenting their work, or figuring out how to fix something that didn't work the first time.
Technology changes. Software changes. Careers change. The skills that matter most are the ability to adapt, think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate, solve problems, and continue learning.
That is why I try to create projects that feel authentic. I want students to experience what it is like to meet a deadline, work through frustration, receive feedback, revise their work, and ultimately say:
"I made this."
I also believe that every student has something valuable to contribute. Not every student will become a graphic designer, filmmaker, accountant, entrepreneur, or 3D artist. That's okay. My responsibility is to help students discover what they can do, develop confidence in their abilities, and recognize the skills they can take with them into whatever comes next.
CREATE — Give students opportunities to turn ideas into something real.
THINK — Teach students to question, analyze, and make thoughtful decisions.
SOLVE — Encourage students to work through problems instead of giving up when something doesn't work.
COMMUNICATE — Help students learn how to present their ideas and work effectively.
PREPARE — Connect classroom learning to college, careers, and everyday life.
After 25 years, I still believe one of the greatest things a teacher can give a student is not simply knowledge.
It is confidence.
Confidence to try something new.
Confidence to make a mistake and learn from it.
Confidence to solve a problem without someone giving them the answer.
And confidence to walk out of the classroom believing, "I can figure this out."
That is what I hope my students take with them long after they leave my classroom.
