3- Social Emotional Learning-Restorative Practices

Presenter: John Lowrance, Social Emotional Teacher Leader at Williams H.S.

Restorative Practices are an innovative alternative to managing student behavior and resolving common conflicts. Conflict and/or misbehavior is going to occur with students. Through the use of Restorative Practices, students learn about and reflect on how their actions affect others. Students also develop empathy and have a chance to engage in dialogue that often repairs relationships that may have been damaged by their actions. The process is also designed to address the needs of those who have been harmed by the actions of others.

The college application process can be daunting and complicated. This session provides tips, tricks, and guides to completing college applications. This is tailored for the specific challenges and needs of students within Plano ISD. Recommendations for each grade level of high school will be addressed to ensure students are marketable to their first choice schools!

5- Social Emotional Learning: Relationship Skills

In this session, you will deepen your understanding of social and emotional learning in Plano ISD, along with the core values in building a social and emotionally healthy home. You will also acquire strategies that promote positive SEL outcomes through family engagement. 9- A Piece of the SEL Puzzle – Social Awareness

Do you ever feel misunderstood? This session has information geared to help families promote SEL competencies through modeling and employing specific parenting practices. Finding ways to take the perspective of another person, empathize with others, including those of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Resources will be given to help put all the pieces together for a clearer picture of how SEL can benefit all students.

Presentation will cover information on dual credit classes offered at the senior highs. Topics covered will include: pros and cons, eligible classes, impact on GPA, difficulty level, difference between dual credit and AP, and who is a good candidate to take dual credit classes.

11- The Effects of Stress on Children's Brain and Behavior

Children's brains change and develop at an increasingly rapid rate during their childhood. The session will discuss the different parts of your child's brain along with the different types of dysregulation and stress your student may experience. You will learn appropriate strategies on how to diffuse your child's stress and teach them how to cope by utilizing real-life strategies.

The transition from elementary school to middle school can be challenging for students and families, but there are some strategies that parents can use to help this process. In this session we will discuss the best ways parents can support their children during this transition and ensure that they are being set up to be successful in middle school.

16- Learning Through Leadership

With college admissions becoming more rigorous, leadership opportunities can help your student stand out among the rest. But, when given a chance, can we really define what leadership is? This session is designed to explore various definitions of "leadership" and ways in which students can develop leader-like qualities. We will discuss the value of leadership training, as well as the resources available to students and families. Learn how to promote your student's growth as a leader and learner, and see how leadership development can impact a student's success in college and career.

University Ready is designed to aid students and parents as they prepare for all aspects of post-secondary experience. College readiness is a result of thoughtful and conscious preparations, not chance or privilege. This session will show you many resources that are at your fingertips and how to navigate through the University Ready website. It’s never too soon and never too late to start down the University Ready path.

Studies have shown that parental support is critical to a student's success. But what does successful parenting look like? In this session, we will look at the power of words and examine the distinction between praise versus encouragement. It will also address when to help students learn acceptance versus where to apply resilience. This presentation will cover responsible decision making. Responsible decision making is the ability to make constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on ethical standards, safety concerns, and social norms. We will discuss problem solving in daily academic and social situations. These are skills that are important for everyone no matter age.

The financial aid process can be confusing. This session will cover the steps and documents needed to secure financial aid.
