SBCC has partnered with Lumos Transforms to offer a five-part hybrid Trauma-Informed Resilience-Oriented (TIRO) course for all employees (faculty, staff and administrators).
We believe that this course is appropriate for all college employees and can help anyone build their emotional intelligence, self-awareness and empathy which can then lead to applying these principles to their professional endeavors. In our case, we hope this will empower all employees to develop and implement policies, procedures and programs that are more student-centered and equity-focused. When we better understand what can lead to trauma for our colleagues and our students, we can help prevent it and cultivate an overall culture of empathy, equity and justice.

Series description:
This highly interactive foundational workshop series introduces embodied trauma-informed resilience-oriented (TIRO) theory through lecture and uses exploratory discussion and participatory activities to build skills for conceptual application and organizational implementation. Developed for use in behavioral health contexts and now expanding across sectors, the TIRO approach centers humane values that both prevent trauma and foster a compassionate culture of equity and justice. TIRO principles are developed in workshop participants not through force of will, but rather through embodied resilience—the capacity for self-awareness, self-regulation, emotional intelligence, and empathy. The foregrounding of embodied resilience capacity building grows participants’ abilities and skills to bring TIRO principles into their internal lives as people, which then organically manifests in their professional behavior, collegial relationships, and the policies, procedures, and programs they develop and implement.
Series Learning Objectives:
Participants will:
Appreciate the role of the embodied Trauma Informed Resilience Oriented (TIRO) approach in successful anti-oppression and liberation work
Begin to develop embodied resilience through:
Identifying personal stress-relaxation physiology in real time
Appraising adaptive utility of personal stress response type and intensity related to incidents of racism or identity based oppression and in the course of anti-oppression activities
Choosing and implementing appropriate strategies to regulate persistent, disproportionate, and/or incongruous stress system activation
Identify, track, attune to stress-relaxation responses in others in the context of cross-cultural interpersonal interactions for improved co-regulation and empathy
Understand the lineage of the TIRO approach and articulate the core TIRO goals
Understand stress-trauma continuum’s expression on the somatic, emotional, mental, behavioral, and relational levels
Explore the interconnections between appeasement, internalized oppression, normative professionalism, and supremacy culture
Redefine resilience through a justice lens
Utilize ethical storytelling processes to explore TIRO principle implementation
Explore local applications of the TIRO organizational change trajectory and processes
