Creative Writing

at Santa Barbara City College

¡Welcome! The Creative Writing program is housed in SBCC's Department of English - Literature and Creative Writing Classes. We welcome all writers, whether new or more established.Whether you're interested in taking a single class, or completing our Creative Writing Certificate, we're happy to have you at SBCC.

We regularly offer English 271P, English 270, English 271F. In Spring 2024, we'll be offering English 270: Intro to Creative Writing online (68704) and English 271F Fiction (66252) online. Both classes will be in an asynchronous format, meaning there is no required time that you have to Zoom in to class. Also note that we are in the process of removing the prerequiste for English 270, so if you need a waiver, simply request one and it will be approved.

Every semester the Creative Writing Program offers two courses or more courses: “Introduction to Creative Writing,” and “Poetry,” “Fiction,” or “Nonfiction”. Our courses can be taken in any order (ex. The” Intro” class is not a prerequisite for taking “Fiction” or “Poetry.”) As an article in The Independent highlighted, we encourage both beginning and experienced writers to become part of the program. We offer an experienced faculty, a robust Visiting Writing Series and--for students enrolled at least half-time at SBCC--the opportunity to compete in the Emmons Poetry Contest.

Support

Our Creative Writing Program is supported largely through donations and endowments made through the SBCC Foundation. In fact, Creative Writing Programs at the California Community College level are rare. If you would like to support this work for students for generations to come, please reach out to Director Joshua Escobar jmescobar2@pipeline.sbcc.edu or the SBCC Foundation
