Course Materials & Essentials

1. Account to "PerusAll"

Use your pipeline email account to register for a "PerusAll" account (this software is FREE). This is where your "textbook" and your "lab manual" (which are electronic) will both be found.

Once you have created your account and you have successfully logged in, you must "enroll in a class" by using our class code: NAPOLEON-XZM6C

2. "Napoleon’s CHEM 101 Packet"

This course notes packet is available at the SBCC bookstore for $9. There are over 200+pages.

You do not have to buy this from the bookstore because the file is available on Canvas for your own printing, but it is my understanding that buying the packet from the bookstore is the cheapest option if you want actual print-outs, as printing 200+ pages can be expensive, even if you have your own printer.

Again: if you do not have a printer or can not afford/have a way to print multipage documents easily, you should definitely buy this from the SBCC bookstore.

There are other packets available for other classes, even chem 101 classes, so make sure you see "NAPOLEON" on the front cover before purchasing.

3. Scientific Calculator

You must have a calculator that adds, subtracts, multiplies, divides, and can handle exponents, parenthesis, and logs. A scientific calculator can usually be found for $10. Recommended models: TI-30X IIS or Casio fx-300MS

If you have a "graphing calculator" already, please use that. If you are continuing on in the sciences, now is a great time to invest in one. Brand new, they can be pricey (over $100 usually), but you can find them used for a bargain.

You could also get a scientific calculator app on your phone (or your phone may already have one), but please know that I find that I'm prone to mistakes whenever I use my phone for multi-step calculation problems like we'll be doing in this class. Also - you will not be permitted to use your phone for any reason during an exam, so you still must have a physical calculator to us.

and ********NEW THIS SEMESTER! You can now "check out" a library for the entire semester at the Luria Library (for FREE!)*************

4. Indirectly Vented Safety Goggles

These not-at-all fashionable, but incredibly important, things are mandatory for working in the chemistry lab.

They are available at various of hardware stores, on the internet, and obviously the bookstore. They must be "indirectly vented" that protect your eyes from splashes and can not be safety glasses or vented.

We have many for free for you all to take from students who have taken chemistry previously and left them for you all to take and use, so you don't have to buy this if you are comfortable with using gently loved ones.

5. Scantrons – Test Length – Quantity Needed: Five (5)

Ugh....it's true.....you will be taking tests in CHEM 101 this semester...I wish it weren't the case, but it's kind of part of education, being tested on what you've learned. So-as such-scantrons are needed for the course.

You can get them anytime during the semester, and they are only about 10 cents a piece, so if you don't want to rush out and have these, then it's no big deal. BUT! If you are at the bookstore and want to get them and just put them in your notebook for future use, then you'll be ready to go.

Access to Course Content Online

Browsers

Not all internet browsers are created equal. Some work better with Canvas, and some may encounter problems.

Mobile Devices and Apps

You can use tablet computers and smartphones for viewing Canvas pages and submitting assignments. However, taking quizzes on smartphones is NOT possible.

Although Canvas says they support quiz on mobile devices, students have often run into frustrating problems. I recommend taking quizzes on a desktop or

laptop computer.

  • Do not take quizzes on a smartphone. You'll need to use a full desktop or laptop computer with a stable Internet connection, a camera, and Chrome.

  • Tablet computers such as iPad and Android Tablets: Accessing Canvas using a mobile browser is possible, but it is NOT recommended as certain functions are

NOT fully supported. For more ensured access, use Canvas Student App for Android/Google Play and iOS. No app is available for Amazon Fire and

other platforms yet.
