Homework

Spelling Homework:

• At the beginning of each week, your child will receive 10 spelling words.   Each day your child will complete a spelling assignment with these spelling words for homework.  It is due the next day.  There will be no homework on Fridays!

• All spelling homework should be completed with pencil (unless otherwise stated).  It should be completed neat and correctly or it will be returned to be redone.

• Spelling homework is a grade and will be entered into your child’s grade book quarterly. 

• At the end of each week students will take a spelling test.  Spelling words should be spelled correctly and letters should be turned correctly (b, d, p, etc.).  If students place capital letters in spelling words that do not need a capital letter it will be marked wrong (ex. cAt).  After Christmas break, spelling words will be counted wrong if letters are reversed (ex. big for dig).  

Math Homework:

• Each day your child will get a math sheet to complete for homework.  It is due the next day.  There will be no homework on Fridays!  

• All math homework should be completed with a pencil.  It should be completed neat and correctly or it will be returned to be redone.

• Math homework is a grade and will be entered into your child’s grade book quarterly.

Reading Homework:

• Students will bring home a leveled book to read in their R.E.D. pouch in their homework folder.  Since we have not yet completed running records to determine your child’s reading level, we will be basing it off of the last running record from kindergarten.  Students should have left Kindergarten on a level C or higher.  Students will soon be assessed to determine their current individual reading levels and the books that come home in their Reading folder will be based on their new level. 

• Students should read for 15 minutes each day.  They should read their book to an adult multiple times (this helps with fluency).  Please keep the book in the book pouch when not being read. They may need your help with sounds and sight words that have not yet been taught/learned.  Please do not allow them to struggle and get frustrated. Help them when needed.  After reading, choose a few questions from the ‘Sample Reading Questions’ page in the homework folder to ask your child about the book (this helps with comprehension).  Please sign the reading log and return the book the next day.  Your child will then read the book to a teacher or volunteer.  If they are able to read the book fluently without help then we will send home a new book.  If your child is not yet ready for a new book we will leave the book in the pocket for more practice.  Please sign the log each night even if they are reading the same book.  We will not put a new book in the folder until a parent has signed the log.  The more your child reads the more they will grow.   Our reading goal is that your child will be on a reading level J or higher by the end of 1st grade.

• Reading homework is a grade and will be entered into your child’s grade book quarterly.  Your child must read a minimum of 4 books a week to receive full homework credit.  

• If at any time you feel that your child’s books have become too easy, please let me know so that we can move them up to the next level.

Sight Words:

• At the beginning of every month your child will get a set of 20 sight words.  We call these words ‘Ball Words.’  Your child will have the whole month to practice these words at home and become fluent.  At the end of the month they will be assessed on all 20 sight words.  These are a reading test grade.
