Black Mussels are Bivalves. They prefer to live in drier habitats and are normally attached to rocks, rocks or barnacles that are not near the muddy bottom of the ocean floor. When the shell is under extreme light, it can appear to be purple but the true color is closer to black. The shells are small in size. They can be out of water for long periods of time. Xenostrobus sp. and Xenostrobus cf are shown in the pictures below (in order).
Most live on the trunks and leaves of mangrove trees. They are believed to be grazing on the hair of leaves and picking up algae from the trees. These molluscs spend most of their time outside of the water even during high tide. They are Gastropods. Three main types are in the pictures below (in order) : Littoraria carnifera, Littoria Conica, Littoria Melanostoma.
