About D2L Capture Web & Video Note

D2L provides two ways for studnets and faculty to create videos: D2L Videonote - which is for short videos that do not share screens, and D2L Capture. Please see below for more information on both:

Can we reuse a VideoNote without first downloading it to our computer?

Yes. While using the "Insert Stuff" button, instead of creating a new VideoNote, use the VideoNote Search and you should be able to locate any Videonotes you've recorded for any class.

Can we change the default student or faculty settings to automatically caption?

No, not to our knowledge. Please remember with each video you record to follow D2L's built-in steps that ensure captioning in your desired language. If you include student-generated video in your course, make sure to remind them to enable auto-captioning for their videos as well.

Can we easily share our screens within a VideoNote?

No. D2L Videonote cannot share screens. It is basic and is limited to webcam recordings or uploaded video.

Notes:

1) D2L Capture Web? Some faculty have noted that D2L's Higher Education Instructor Knowledge Base says that student-generated presentations are possible in D2L. While possible at some schools, keep in mind that as of May 2024, this D2L feature is not possible at Pima Community College. Keep in mind that D2L's knowledge base includes both standard D2L Brightspace tools as well as advanced packages. While D2L does have another tool that provides this functionality (Capture Web), it is packaged within D2L's Creator+ content authoring package - which we do not currently pay for at our college. Unfortunately, there is not currently an easy way to filter their knowledge base to reflect Pima's tool package. As such, please use this Faculty Guide as you explore which tools you can utilize.

2) One Faculty Hack for VideoNote: some faculty with advanced technical skills have been able to reassign browser cameras to third-party tools like Open Broadcaster Studio in order to capture green-screened video that replaces video background with desktop content.

3) Panopto. For a more robust student-generated video solution, we strongly recommend using Panopto.

Can the VideoNotes tool be used on a mobile device?

Yes!. It may be harder to record in than on a laptop, but it's doable. Keep in mind that it may take longer for students to enabling captioning on a mobile device (i.e. a cell-phone or tablet). According to our faculty, if students click on the gearbox and shift the default to enable captioning, it works - but it is not as easy to navigate on a cellphone in particular.

If students note that VideoNote isn't working with their device, as with any advanced technology, you might encourage them to instead post a recorded video using an alternate tool (e.g a cloud-linked Loom video).
