Dear junior high band members and parents,
I hope everyone had a great summer! I am very excited to get the junior high band started and looking forward to continuing the tradition of high quality of music at Pikeland Community School. This is a quick overview of what is expected as a member of the junior high band. Student and parent should sign and return the attached form by Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
Students will receive a grade in band based on attendance and participation. The point system is as follows:
Daily Points
Each band day, the student can earn a total of 10 points. 5 points for having their instrument (including working reeds, oil and other supplies), one point each for a pencil and their music, and 3 points for behavior and participation.
Parades (200 points each)
a. August 30, 2025 - Pittsfield Fall Festival
b. September 20, 2025 - Griggsville Apple Festival
c. September 27, 2025 - Milton Corn Carnival
Concerts (300 points each)
The winter concert will be held Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at 7:00 in the PCS Gym
The Music Booster’s Fundraiser Supper is Friday, March 27, 2026 in the PCS Gym
The Spring Concert will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2026 at 7:30 in the PCS Gym
Check-offs (25 points each)
Each week, students will perform an assigned musical selection for a grade.
Students can receive extra credit for: (Please bring a program or bulletin for my records)
performing outside of band (i.e. playing at church, etc.)
attending an approved concert
Performances are important grades for the student.
If a student misses a performance, he or she may fail band.
Classroom rules:
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Be Ready
A positive classroom atmosphere is always the goal and provides a rewarding experience for all. Consequences of bad behavior are: warning, conference with teacher/administrator, contacting parent, or a detention--not necessarily in that order, depending on offense.
Student Dress:
This is a very exciting year because the PCS Marching band has new uniforms! The new tops will stay at school. If you do not go back to school after a parade, the top must be returned the next school day. As always, students are not allowed to have any food or drink, except plain water, while wearing the uniform.
Students will be required to purchase a band t-shirt to wear under the uniform. These shirts may also be used at concerts throughout the year. The cost of the shirt is $10. Students will also need to provide black pants, black socks and black shoes. If you would like to purchase marching shoes, they are $30.
Materials:
We will continue using the Winning Rhythms and Tradition of Excellence Blue Book from last year. Please contact Mrs. Bangert if you need a replacement. The junior high band also uses Foundations for Superior Performance. This book will be used in class as well as the weekly lessons. The price of the book is $7.00 for winds and $11.00 for percussion. Also, it is time to purchase any other supplies that the students may need, such as reeds, cork grease, or valve oil. Clarinet and saxophone players must have at least two working reeds at all times. The band store will only be open before or after school. Students will not be able to purchase supplies during class.
Remind
I use a service called Remind to make it easy to contact band members and parents in the event of schedule changes and/or cancelations (i.e. a parade being cancelled due to bad weather). This free service was developed as a safe way for teachers to contact students. Everyone must register to receive the alerts so I know that everyone is getting the latest information. The system requires you to enroll by sending a text to receive updates. The only personal information that the system requires is your cell phone number and your name. Your phone number is not accessible to anyone.
To enroll in Remind, text @pcsband to 81010
The junior high band also has a website https://sites.google.com/pikeland.org/pcs-band/home
I will keep that site updated with weekly check-offs and other assignments and dates. I hope this letter answers all of your questions about the junior high band. If you do have a question, feel free to call me at school, cell, or send a message through Remind. My cell number is (217) 440-4049.
With your help, this year will be the best for the Pikeland Unit 10 School Music Department.
Yours behind the baton,
Mrs. Chardy Bangert
