As principals, we wear many hats. One of the most important ones we wear is the coach’s hat. Although we can never fully be instructional coaches in our building, we must continue to have dialogue with teachers on feedback towards their goals. In this session, learn how to wear a coaching hat and conduct the district-required evaluation that need to be complete, while having coaching conversations with teachers. Just as a teacher supports students at their varied levels, a principal with a coaching hat supports teachers in the same manner, recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work. I will share insight with you I have learned from KDE’s Coach Approach Pilot using Cognitive Coaching through the Thinking Collaborative and the work of Jessica Johnson’s The Coach Approach to School Leadership.

With so much emphasis being placed on non-contact avenues of retrieving information, many of us have resorted to using Google Docs and Google Forms to get the required documents that we need. Although Google Forms gives us an opportunity to receive information quickly and in an acceptable manner with the perimeters that we have to deal with, the information if often times unorganized, time consuming to locate, and then we have to save the needed files. "Autocrat" is an add-on in Google Sheets than can be used to organize each Google Forms submission into a PDF document. The document that can be sent directly to a Google Drive folder of your choosing with the students name as the title of the document for easy access and location. Also, the folder can be shared with anyone who needs access to the information and each recipient will be notified by email once the form has been submitted. It does take some time to link the Google Doc to the Google Form, but the end result is worth the time spent to set it up.

" In this day and age when all of us are being bombarded with information coming from many sources, it becomes more important for us, as administrators, to control the message being sent to our students and parents. We must monitor the information that goes out to our community; if parents/guardians do not receive information from us, they will seek it from other sources. If we don't control our message, someone else will control it for us. See how our school uses Facebook groups to do just that. Hear about the pitfalls we've encountered and the protocols we have established to enable us to be the party who controls our message."

As administrators, we can all agree that clear and consistent communication is key to building relationships with stakeholders within our schools. We have all faced the challenges of not being able to contact that particular parent or guardian and the difficulties that arise from such a challenge. Although we will not be able to tell you how to make contact with every parent or guardian in your school, we do hope to shine some light on strategies and resources that have helped us along the way. Some of these strategies and resources will be familiar to you and some will be new. Our goal is to give each one of you at least one new strategy or resource to help you with communicating with your stakeholders.

Going alphabetically by school, each principal will tell the group what they’re having for lunch and then will play Three Truths and a Lie. It’s a pretty fun activity, here’s how it goes:
Rules: During our video conference each administrator will tell three truths and one lie about themselves. Keep the lie realistic so it won’t be so easy for everyone to guess. The next person in line alphabetically tries to guess which is the lie. If the guess is incorrect the person then explains which one was a lie.
Objective: Playing this game helps to rid of any awkwardness as it is light and fun. Plus, it is a great way to get to know one another on a more personal level, especially things that aren’t common knowledge.

We as administrators practice Hope all the time. To have hope is merely to want an outcome that makes life better in some way. My Challenge to all is to have hope for the upcoming school year and a vision that regardless of what comes our way, Pike County will remain strong and approach each day with a new Hope. Heart and hope becomes personal and shared. Our hope as educators is to have everything we need to change the lives of our students (skills, knowledge, mindset, community support, and the leadership so that we can do this). This is my challenge to ALL of us in Pike County for our upcoming school year.
