Why AVID

Start With My Why

Soul Mate

This person (student) motivates me to be better at my craft.

Who was a former teacher who inspired my?

Think of adjectives that describe this teacher. (words or images)

AVID Family-like feel. Encouraging. Engaged.

Don’t all you students deserve this experience?

Consider the impact

What would the impact be in your district if every teacher were like the one you just described?

When teachers are engaged, students succeed.

Think about a recent graduate. . .

What are some words they would use to describe their 9-12 grade experience?

AVID Mission: Close the achievement gap by preparing all students to succeed in a global society.

AVID Elective Focused attention is given to targeted students through an elective class.

First in family to attend college

Average to high test scores

Academic middle with GPA of 2.0-3.0

College potential, with support from AVID strategies

Individual desire and determination. INTERVIEW PROCESS

I want to do better. I want something better for my family. I am willing to do what it takes to better my situation.

WICOR

Point of Confusion: This is where other students start to ask questions to get the student with the question HOW TO DO IT, not showing them how to do it. This way they will remember the steps they need to do future questions.

Backwards Mapping: Have students verbalize what they want to be and work backwards toward that goal.
