(1) Scales and arpeggios

• Violin D major (2 octaves) & melodic minor of choice (2 octaves)

• Viola G major (2 octaves) & melodic minor of choice (2 octaves)

• Cello G major (2 octaves) & melodic minor of choice (2 octaves)

• Bass G major (2 octaves) & melodic minor of choice (2 octaves)

• Scales shall be slurred 4 to a bow; arpeggios shall be slurred 3 to a bow.

• Scales shall be performed as sixteenth notes at a minimum tempo of quarter note=50.

• Arpeggios shall be performed the same number of octaves as the corresponding scale as eighth note triplets at a minimum tempo of quarter note=50.

• Scales and arpeggios shall be performed from memory.

(3) Sight-Reading:

• The sight-reading selection shall be approximately 8 measures in length. New compositions should be composed specifically for auditions each year.

• The student is given a 30 second preview period, during which he/she may finger or air-bow, but may not play the instrument.

• The judges may use a metronome to provide the correct tempo before the preparatory period begins. The metronome will not be used during the prep period or during the sight-reading performance.

Students will be allowed one “restart” without penalty for each of the three components of the audition. Subsequent restarts should be assessed a penalty in each of the judges’ scores. Once the passage is finished, no restarts shall be granted.
