Perpetual Help Learning Academy of Quezon City was first known by the name Perpetual Help Learning Center when it started offering preschool courses in the year 1990. It was a modest one-room affair, actually operating out of the family home garage along Corumi Street in Masambong, Quezon City. The school was borne out of a partnership between the local Catholic Women’s League in the barangay and one of its members, Mrs. Estelita G. Antolin, a retired public school teacher. Years later, ownership had to be relinquished due to economic constraints.
A new management team led by Mrs. Elizabeth G. Sarmiento came in to breathe much needed succor. Though not an educator by academic training, Mrs. Sarmiento, fondly called Ma’am Beth by the school community, had the burning ambition to foster the young children of Masambong and neighboring barangays as her apostolate to the Lord and Mama Mary, to whom she is an ardent devotee. Perpetual Help Learning Center of Masambong, Quezon City thus came into existence in 2004.
The transition of the school’s operation under the new leadership was not without challenges. Much was to be desired insofar as the physical structure of the school was concerned. Every square foot of the meager 204 square meter property had to be maximized to adequately serve its young constituents. Permits had to be secured and the professional competence of the faculty had to be upgraded. Added to the woes of the fledgling operation was the school’s isolation from the neighboring community due to a road construction just before the opening of the school year. The expected enrollment of more than one hundred became an actual seventy. It was only Ma’am Beth’s unwavering faith that things will get better through the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help that the morale of the school was kept afloat in that first year. Indeed, that low turn-out of School Year 2004-2005 spread news about the little school that could. Perpetual is where families can send their young ones for early education at very reasonable rates, satisfied parents said. Truly, others echoed, the administrators and teachers of Perpetual are unassuming but very dedicated to the practice of their profession.
And so it was that the faith of the Perpetual community was greatly rewarded.
By the School Year 2005-2006, enrollment more than trebled. Grateful for the support from the community but driven to reach even more young children to educate, Perpetual expanded to Grade School levels 1 and 2. The juggernaut on which Perpetual was flying continued on for years until the school at its Corumi Address was almost unable to accommodate all enrollees.
Again, Perpetual, headed by Ma’am Beth was up to the challenge. Armed not so much by financial funding but sound and noble intentions, a bank loan was secured for the construction of a new, specifically dedicated school building along nearby Wayan Street. Another change of name was called for and Perpetual was reincarnated as Perpetual Help Learning Academy of Quezon City. All these coincided with the school’s transfer to its new address, No. 7 Wayan Street in School Year 2009-2010.
Investment was infused even as Perpetual continued its reputation as a school that rarely increased its fees yet provided quality education. A new endeavour of widening the school’s reach materialized yet again in 2010 when high school education began to be offered. Additional blessing came by way of the Department of Education’s grant of Recognition to all three of the school’s programs from preschool or kindergarten, to grade school and high school.
In September of 2016, the Perpetual Community lost its leader with the passing of our President and Directress, Ma’am Beth, who tirelessly shepherded the school from its inception in 2004. Ma’am Beth left a big void as it was her vision, fortitude and sheer courage which brought the school from its humble beginning to a school population of almost a thousand.
It is in our Directress’ honor that the new leadership of second generation Sarmiento educators have made a promise to continue on their mother’s legacy. Atty. Ma. Elizabeth, a Cum Laude graduate and Teachers’ Board Examination topnotcher has stepped in with the dual role of President and Principal, Artemio Jr., a Masteral Education in Educational Supervision Student as Secretary and Registrar and Angela Paula, also a Cum Laude graduate and Professional Teacher, as Treasurer and Vice Principal.
Meanwhile, Perpetual’s young blood leadership and faculty are also striving hard to be worthy of the trust and confidence of its studentry and client families. Focus is intensified at keeping abreast of changes in the educational system, particularly the developments in the curriculum brought about by the demands of the 21st Century. On their own, numerous members of the faculty and administrators are individually furthering their own education by attending short courses and post-graduate studies.
What is more—the school has already commenced construction on the dream project of an expanded campus on the recently acquired property at No. 9 Wayan, the adjacent lot of our current address. Exciting developments are expected with the expansion and construction of a second building. From 420 square meters, the school will soon be standing on an 840-square meter lot. It is expected that in the near future, some school presentations and events will no longer be held in outside venues. A bigger open area will welcome students in the ground floor.
The lore of Perpetual will only continue to grow with this. The coming school year will mark the completion of its fifth batch of Grade School graduates who completed the elementary level with a Perpetual education. Also rising to the most senior level in the community is the eighth batch of high school-- now known as junior high school completers with tutelage under Perpetual educators from Grade 7 to 10. Our alumni are making us proud. Bigger and more established schools have noted that our graduates are doing well in their institutions even to the point of rising up in the academic honors ladder. We are producing not only academically excelling students but young men and women of God who are productive members of society.
Our cup runneth over. We owe our continuing successes to the guidance of our patron, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, as she continues to cuddle to her bosom, much like the Infant Jesus, the students of PHLA.
God-fearing, responsible, thankful and productive youth.
To get nearer to this dream, the Perpetual Help Learning Academy of Quezon City commits to:
