Northeast High School Mission Statement

Northeast High School seeks to empower students to embrace learning as a lifelong process. We strive to foster in our students a respect for all people regardless of race, ethnicity, class, gender, or sexual orientation, for this is the very essence of learning in a global community. We aim to prepare our students to be contributing members of our 21st century high-tech society. Our ultimate goal is for our students to become empathetic leaders within their families, communities, and world.

Northeast High School Beliefs

We believe that:

• Children come first
• Learning occurs when made relevant to the students’ lives
• Children learn in a variety of ways
• Students flourish when pushed to their highest intellectual capabilities
• All children deserve highly qualified and caring teachers
• Teachers reach their students by forming trusting, safe relationships with them
• Students excel when they have access to the newest technological innovations
• Our teachers, students, and community at large welcome diverse backgrounds and points of view
• A collaborative environment among teachers will foster higher student achievement and model positive group dynamics for our students
• Parents play integral roles in their children’s success
• Communication skills are integral in assuring success in the 21st century
• Student learning increases when students are given the opportunity to work with their peers in order to prepare them for team endeavors beyond high school
• Literacy skills are cross curricular and can be developed actively in all classrooms
• Leadership and accountability are the keys to success

PRINCIPALS’ MESSAGE

On behalf of the administration of Northeast High School, we would like to extend a very sincere welcome. Serving nearly 3600 students representing many different racial and ethnic backgrounds, and who speak more than 50 languages, Northeast High School is the largest comprehensive high school in the city, and the second largest in the state.

Embedded in the belief that all children can learn, the mission of Northeast High School is to ensure that every student achieves post-secondary success through the establishment of an educational program that encourages and enables the students of Northeast High School:

• to develop the habits of mind and scholarship that promote self-initiated, independent thinking, as well as the continued pursuit and acquisition of knowledge
• to develop an appreciation, understanding and acceptance of different cultures, values and attitudes, and
• to become competent and productive members of our society who have the ability to adapt and compete in an ever-changing world.

It is our hope and desire to accomplish this through the establishment of an educational environment that reflects a collaborative effort by the administration, staff, students and parents; that uses the natural diversity of the student body to enhance students’ respect for other cultures, and which is conducive to the development of an educational program that is appropriate to the abilities and needs of each student, while also promoting self-motivation, self-esteem, self-discipline, a good work ethic, good social skills and citizenship. Further, acknowledging the interdependent relationship that exists among academic, interscholastic and co-curricular programs towards the growth and development of students, we believe that our programs are second to none and we are committed to their continued development and improvement.

This handbook is designed to serve as a guide to help you to become acquainted with Northeast High School, its policies, procedures and guidelines, as well as understand the expectations that we have of you. It is expected that you will read this handbook and become knowledgeable of its contents. If it should become necessary to amend or delete any procedure or policy contained herein, a memo under separate cover will be issued at the appropriate time. The same will occur if it is necessary to include a procedure or policy not already addressed, herein.
