Class of 224 STEAM Grants

Students and faculty are invited to apply for a 224 STEAM Innovation Grant

The 224th graduating class has generously endowed a STEAM Innovation Fund to encourage exploration of the STEAM fields at CHS. It is accessible to students and teachers with the express purpose of promoting 21st century skills and encouraging innovation, experimentation, and risk-taking.

What is STEAM?

Science Technology Engineering Arts Math. More than 5 disciplines that lead the way in 21st century career growth and thinking, STEAM is a 'way of doing business' that emphasizes collaborative and creative ways of approaching challenges.

How much can I ask for?

Up to $1000

When is the deadline?

Rolling basis until May 1

What can the fund be used for?

  • Summer program tuition and/or travel
  • Extracurricular STEAM projects that benefits the CHS and/or Philadelphia community
  • Supplemental courses or workshops
  • Honoraria for guest speakers at events, classes, club meetings
  • Registration fees for competitions
  • Books, recordings, software used in the completion of a STEAM project

How do I know if my project is appropriate?

Ask yourself:

  1. Does my request allow me or my fellow students to try something innovative that we otherwise wouldn't be able to do?
  2. Does my request encourage collaboration and promote creativity in problem solving?
  3. Will my request help prepare me and other participants to take on the challenges of the 21st century?
  4. Does my request involve science, technology, engineering, math, and/or connect the arts to any of those fields?

What do I have to do?

  1. Find a sponsoring faculty member. (If you are a student.)
  2. Create a detailed budget for your costs, including specific items (product numbers, link to supplier).
  3. Write a clear statement explaining your vision, goals, and outcomes. Make sure it is crystal clear and compelling.
  4. Fill out the grant application form. (protip: Save it with a useful title. Ex) Cohen.hovercraft.STEAMGrant.2017 )
  5. Email it as a WORD document to Mark Lipshutz (marklipshutz@gmail.com) and Ben Lipman (ben@lipman-law.com) pro-tip: Write a short note to Mr. Lipshutz and Mr. Lipman in the body of your email introducing yourself and thanking them for the opportunity. Double check that the grant document is attached. Wear your lucky socks and press 'send'.
  6. Go before the deciding committee to defend and refine your idea.
  7. Write a report and submit photos/video/appropriate evidence upon completion of your project.
