December's Makerspace challenges focus on the Season of Winter and all the Holidays people celebrate during this time like Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza!
When there is snow on the ground make a copy of this list and see if you can find everything on it! Take your science journal or a sketch pad with you and draw some of the interesting things you see, like animal footprints, feathers, and birds. Also, if you do find a pinecone save it for this month's Bird Feeder Challenge!
Each challenge gets a little more difficult. Don't let that stop you from trying as many as you like. Can you do them all?
Don't have all the materials listed? That's ok. I listed more than you'll need and you can ask a grown up to find replacement materials.
Each challenge has some bonus challenges. Try them out for added fun!
Try different Iterations (reworking your design) until you are happy with it.
Do not be afraid to fail. Failing is how we learn what works and what doesn't. Scientists and engineers fail all the time...Its part of their job.
TERMS:
Engineer: A person who uses scientific principles to design and build machines, structures, and other items, including bridges, tunnels, roads, vehicles, and buildings
Engineering Design Process: The engineering design process is a series of steps that engineers follow to come up with a solution to a problem. Many times the solution involves designing a product (like a machine or computer code) that meets certain criteria and/or accomplishes a certain task.
Iteration: The repetition of a process in order to generate an outcome. ... Each repetition of the process is a single iteration, and the outcome of each iteration is then the starting point of the next iteration.
Materials: What you need to build your design challenge
Constraints: Limitation or Restriction on what your are able to do in the challenge. Apart from materials, your constraints in these challenges may be time.
Fail: A learning experience and a chance to try a new Iteration!
