High School Application Weekly Updates

SELECTION DEADLINE:

JANUARY 27 at 4:59 PM

☟☟Scroll down for past updates and events ☟☟

January 26th, 2023

Good Afternoon!

Just a reminder that TOMORROW, Friday 1/27/23 is the deadline for accepting an offer from a high school. Your child must make their final selection by Friday 1/27/23 at 4:59 PM. After 4:59 PM, all offers will auto-decline and your child will not be able to make a selection. Below is a copy of the email that I sent home last week, with more details.

I'm recommending that all students log into their application tonight, to make their selection, so that if they encounter any issues we can ensure they are addressed before the deadline.

Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

Take care,

EMAIL FROM 1/20/21:

Good Afternoon!

I hope you're all doing well. Today, you should receive an email from the School District with information about your child's high school application and how to view their lottery results. I have included a copy of their email below. Please read it thoroughly.

Here are the important highlights to take note of:

  • Your child will find out their high school options TODAY, Friday 1/20/23 after 5:00 PM

  • You will see one of the following listed next to each school your child has applied to:

    • Approved - with "accept" and "decline" buttons (Do NOT hit "decline")

    • Waitlisted - with the number your child is on the waitlist

    • Ineligible/Denied - your child is not eligible for this school due to their grades, attendance, PSSA scores, or audition/portfolio

  • You can view their high school options (the lottery results) on your child's School Selection Portal. Have them log into philasd.org, click "Message Center" and then select the School Selection application. This is the same website where they submitted their high school application earlier in the year.

  • Your child must make their final selection by Friday 1/27/23 at 4:59 PM. After 4:59 PM, all offers will auto-decline and your child will not be able to make a selection.

  • Do NOT click the "Decline" button. For some reason the district isn't able to remove this button from the website, and selecting "decline" is irreversible. It will immediately remove the offer from your child's portal.

  • You must log in and make a selection by the 1/27/23 deadline - even if your child has only been given an offer from one school. If you do not make a selection by the deadline, all of the offers will auto-decline.

  • After 1/27/23, the Waitlist process will begin. If your child is waitlisted to their "top choice school", I recommend that they select/accept one of the schools that they received an offer from, while they wait to hear from the waitlisted school. If your child is selected off of the waitlist, you will receive an email and/or text. If your child is given an offer off the waitlist, they must reply to that offer within 3 days. During the waitlist period, your child will only be able to make one selection - any other previously confirmed offer and any other pending waitlists will be auto-declined. More info to come about this process.

  • These admissions decisions, and the lottery, happen at the district level. For technical issues with accessing your application contact: The Family Tech Hotline (215-400-4444, FamilyTechSupport@philasd.org). For questions or concerns with the school selection process or offer status contact: The Office of Student Enrollment and Placement (215-400-4290, schoolselect@philasd.org)

Mrs. Getts' Tips:

  • All of the 8th graders in Philadelphia will be logging into the School Selection portal at 5PM. Don't be surprised if the website is slow!

  • Even if you're planning on moving or sending your child to a Charter/Private/Catholic school, I recommend accepting an offer from a Philly public school as well. Having a backup plan is critical. A few years ago we had a number of students that were excited to attend Hallahan - and when the school closed over the summer those students were grateful to have a philly public school accepted as a backup plan.

  • The Deadline to apply to Charter Schools is this upcoming Monday, January 23rd. If you are not happy with your child's offers, another option to consider is applying to Charter Schools this weekend. More info here: https://applyphillycharter.org/

  • Your child has the opportunity to participate in this School Selection Process every year. If they are not happy with their options this year, they can apply again, at the beginning of 9th grade, for a new school to attend in 10th grade. In that case, the high schools will be looking at their grades, attendance, and PSSA scores from 8th grade. Remind your child to keep up with their work for the reminder of the year.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns about this process. I will be in touch next week with reminders about the deadline and about the Waitlist process. Below is a copy of the email that the district will be sending out, and attached is a stepper for viewing your child's School Selection Results.

Take care,

Kelly Getts

________________________________________________________

We appreciate your patience and know you have been eagerly waiting for the results of the school selection process for the 2023-2024 school year. School selection lottery results will be available in the application after 5:00 PM Friday, January 20th, 2023! You will receive an email and text with “Directions for Viewing School Selection Result”.

Many of you indicated the response time after the initial offer was too short. In response to your feedback we are extending the deadline for you to respond to your lottery offer. You now have seven (7) days to make a final decision. You will also be able to see your position on any waitlists at that time. Your final selection of a school must be submitted by Friday, January 27th, by 4:59 PM. OFFERS STILL PENDING WILL AUTO-DECLINE AT 5:00PM ON FRIDAY JANUARY 27, 2023. Please read all the information below before taking action in your application when results become available.

What do you need to know?

THE LAST DAY TO CONFIRM YOUR DECISION TO ACCEPT AN OFFER FOR A SCHOOL PLACEMENT IS FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2023, BY 5:00 PM.

DO NOT SELECT THE “DECLINE” BUTTON UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN YOU DO NOT WANT TO ATTEND THAT SCHOOL. Once you hit the ‘Decline” button, that school option will no longer be available to select. Do not click “Decline” if you think you may change your mind before the deadline on Friday, January 27, 2023, by 5:00 PM.*** A declined decision becomes FINAL once declined.

During the response phase, students will be able to change the offer they are ACCEPTING as many times as they would like by following the steps in the “Directions for Viewing School Selection Results” guide, as long as the “Decline” button is not selected for any school to which the student received an offer.

You must affirmatively accept an offer. If your child does not accept an offer before the January 27, 2023, by 5:00 PM deadline AND does not choose to accept any waitlist offer (waitlist offers will be shared after the close of the response phase and will be ongoing), those offers, including waitlist offers, will be considered declined.

If you have questions and/or need support:

  • For questions or concerns with the school selection process or offer status: The Office of Student Enrollment and Placement (215-400-4290, schoolselect@philasd.org) is available to support students and families and will have extended phone hours from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM on January 20, 2023. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

  • For technical issues with accessing your application: The Family Tech Hotline (215-400-4444, FamilyTechSupport@philasd.org) will have extended phone hours from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM on January 20, 2023. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Thank you for your interest in attending a school in the School District of Philadelphia.

OCTOBER 28, 2022

Good Afternoon!

Hope you're all doing well! This is the final weekend before the application deadline! If you have not done so already, please complete the application this weekend. The application can be found in your child's Student Portal - click on the blue School Selection App in their Message Center. Please email me ASAP if you have any questions or concerns.

There are only 7 Days until the application deadline (Friday, November 4, 2022 at 11:59 PM).

IMPORTANT LINKS:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • I recommend using your child's Student Portal to complete the application. Many families are struggling to get into their Parent Portal - or report that only one of their children shows up in the Parent Portal. Have your 8th Grader bring home their Chromebook, log into philasd.org (they do this every day in school) and navigate to the School Selection Application in their Message Center.

  • If your child will be applying to SLA or SLA@Beeber, you MUST schedule a virtual project presentation. Students who do not interview/present their project will not be considered for admissions. Schedule the project presentation here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScQcJ3_9VqK9MGyz_aWqKfc96SjuF2NplCqPUeHeiUKJUaAtA/viewform

  • Each student will choose FIVE (5) Philadelphia Public High Schools to apply to, and the application will be completed online and at home, via their Student Portal.

  • Students should only apply to schools that they meet the admissions criteria for. The School District will be using a computerized lottery. If a student meets the admissions criteria, they will be entered into the lottery and will either be "accepted" or "waitlisted" (but note, they may be number 400+ on the waitlist). If the student does not meet the admissions criteria, they will be automatically denied. There is absolutely no wiggle room this year, so students should not "waste" application spots on schools they will be automatically denied to. Students who do not meet the admissions criteria for any of the Criteria/Special Admissions Schools should focus on Catchment (Neighborhood) and Citywide Schools.

  • There will be NO writing samples, essays, interviews, or letters of recommendation this year. There is no where to attach these documents to the application. Some schools will require an audition, portfolio, or project submission.

  • Your child's PSSA Score and Percentile were sent home (on a yellow paper). Please let me know if you'd like another copy sent to you electronically. PSSA Scores are also available on the Parent Portal.
