National History Day

What is NHD?

The National History Day competition is the most highly regarded academic high school competition in the world and is the recipient of the prestigious Presidential Humanities Medal. As part of this project, students create a hands on project based upon research on a specific historical topic related to the annual theme. Students who are new to Constitution High School are required to complete this project and compete on the school level as part of their Historiography course.

Why NHD?

This project aligns with our school's three core tenants of knowledge of history, active citizenship, and democratic deliberation, as students use a historical topic of their choice to delve deeply into research, action, and discussion throughout the course. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop strong reading, research, and writing skills through analysis of primary and secondary sources.

What should I do now to prepare?

Review this year's website and theme book to begin thinking about a possible topic. Consider what you already know about this topic and what you would like to learn. You can find more information about the theme and the project itself on the NHD website here: National History Day
