Annual Senior/Board Lunch

Posted 5/17/24

Each year, Phil-Mont's Board of Trustees has the special opportunity to share a meal with the graduating senior class. This year, despite the smaller class size, the board and students enjoyed a delightful lunch at the Sandy Run Country Club. Students shared their school experiences and suggestions for improvements, while board members offered valuable advice for their upcoming college journeys. Board President Rich Steiger also addressed the group. As one senior said, "That was the best free lunch I've had in a while."

MS Outdoors Club

Posted 4/18/24

Mr. Roupe's Outdoors Club started this week as some excited and capable middle school students were able to go fishing in Hillcrest Pond for the first time this year. The club allows selected students to participate based on their interests in being outdoors and experiencing new things. This first activity included instruction in casting for those who came as fishing novices.

Energy Simulation

Posted 3/22/24

While doing a science lab on the conservation of energy, eighth-grade students built an integrated simulation involving a skateboarder and skate park to help them visualize how energy transforms from kinetic to potential in different situations. They then connected seven different Chromebooks together, and ran the simulation as if the skateboarder traveled through all their computers in order. Impressive.

At the end of the tournament, each player was given an award, with special recognition given to the top five players: Matthew Williams (5th), Timothy VanVeldhuizen (4th), Jon Yao (3rd), Miles Wilkening (2nd), and Jasmine Ren (1st). Congratulations to all the students pictured below!

ACSI Fine Arts Festival

Posted 3/08/24
On Monday, March 4, Phil-Mont artists and musicians traveled to Cairn University for the ACSI Fine Arts Festival. Congratulations to all the students for representing Phil-Mont well! Concert Bands and Jazz Bands for both middle and high school received Superior ratings along with one perfect score for the High School Jazz Band. Middle and high school choirs also delivered outstanding performances earning them a rating of Excellent.

Our artists were also recognized for their work with 14 out of 24 submitted art entries receiving Superior ratings and the remaining pieces receiving a rating of Excellent. Of special note, senior Broghan Sweeney received top honors in Commercial Design and Visual Order for the categories of Graphic Novel/Comics and Production. Fellow senior, Timothy Curcuruto received top honors for his Senior Portfolio, and sixth grader Raigan Latinis was voted by Festival attendees as the winner of the People's Choice Award for her sculpture, "The Joy of Pancakes."

Reading Olympics

Posted 3/11/24
On Wednesday, March 6, the Middle School Reading Olympics teams led by Mr. Hoffmann and Miss Olinger, competed in the Reading Olympics. Both teams showed great poise, teamwork, knowledge, and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Phil-Mont's teams competed against many public and private schools from throughout Montgomery County. The girls' team scored 42 points earning them a blue ribbon while the boys' team scored 37 points and earned a red ribbon. Well done to both teams!

Middle School Basketball Madness

Posted 2/12/24
On February 7-8, Phil-Mont hosted its annual Middle School Basketball Madness Tournament. Impressively, both our teams walked away with trophies!

The Lady Falcons retained their Middle Madness title for the third straight year. In their opening game vs TCA, Taylor notched 10 points and several steals. The Falcons used their air-tight 3-2 monster zone to thwart TCA's offensive plays, and Aubrei sealed the deal with 17 points and her typical excellence as the lead guard. The championship game was a rematch vs Calvary Baptist, a team that gave the Falcons trouble in last season's TCA tournament. The Falcons went in with a plan: shut down Calvary's two scorers, turn our defense into offense, and see themselves as threats! Aubrei led the team with 22 points and superb finishing on her fast breaks. Angel was a force to reckon with: stealing, shooting, and out-rebounding her opponents. Seventh graders Aaliyah Liegel and Taylor Shaw contributed a combined 6 points to the scoreboard, and Scarlett Swaim helped the Falcons start strong with 4 points in the first quarter. All-tournament honors were earned by eighth graders Aubrei Smith and Angel Washington.

The boys' team also brought their "A' game to both rounds of the tournament. They dispatched TCA in the opener 49-19, thanks to the unselfish team play and Lonnie's season-high 10-point outburst. The championship game against Lancaster Christian was a tight contest heading into the second quarter, but thanks to Sebastian's red-hot three-point shooting, the boys headed into halftime with a comfortable lead that they kept increasing en route to a convincing 41-23 victory. Amir ran the offense masterfully once again, finding the open players and scoring 14 points. Luke hit 2 big outside shots and Chris found his way to the free throw line with his tough inside play. Congrats to Sebastian and Amir for earning all-tournament honors for their superior play.

Middle School Sweats Fundraiser

Posted 2/12/24
Friday, February 9 marked the end of the second round of middle school's Friday Sweats Fundraiser. Students and faculty were invited to pay $1 each week to enjoy wearing their favorite sweatpants to school. Proceeds from this round are going to support Compassion's Birth Attendant program.

In developing countries, fewer than 70% of new moms give birth in a hospital or with a certified birth attendant present.  Because of this, each year, nearly 1,000,000 babies die the day they are born. A gift of a birth attendant is one of the most strategic ways to help save the lives of a mother and her baby. A "gift" of $100 pays the wages for the attendant as well as her supply bag for that birth.

Middle schoolers raised $308 allowing them to "purchase" three birth attendants. This means that six lives (moms and babies) will have a considerably better chance of survival -- Praise God!

Middle School Sledding

Posted 1/26/24

We know that middle schoolers work hard -- but this week we learned that they also sled hard! Mrs. Errickson led the way as adventurous students braved the cold on Tuesday and enjoyed the slick conditions of Phil-Mont's back hill.

Puppet Show Success

Posted 1/26/24

Each Wednesday, Mr. Liegel teaches a high school puppet elective. Students have been working hard on mastering their puppeteering skills and for their final production performed a show for the pre-k, kindergarten, and first-grade classes.

In the show, Princess Marigold has many interesting (and worrisome) encounters with her neighbors while playing fetch with her dog. The captivating and humorous story--ask your kids about the "extra sneezy neighbor"-- concluded with a Bible lesson from Matthew 7 where Jesus speaks about treating our neighbors as we would want to be treated. Audience members were encouraged to live their lives in ways that bring glory to God!

Interact Partners with the Rotary Club

Posted 12/14/23

Five of Phil-Mont's high school Interact club members spent last Saturday morning helping the Rotary Club of Springfield Township run their Holiday Fun and Food Drive. Pictured here are a few of them with members from Springfield High School Interact, as well as pictures of the fantastic five at their jewelry and wreath stations. Sponsors Mrs. V and Dr. Riches were grateful for this incredibly responsible and helpful crew!

Operation Brotherhood

Posted 12/14/23

Phil-Mont's chapter of the National Honor Society organized a food drive in November to benefit families in our local area. Each classroom was given a specific food assignment and asked to bring in as many donations as they could. Students rose to the challenge and collected more than 1,000 food items that were then donated the week prior to Thanksgiving.

2nd Grade Philly Fest

Posted 12/14/23

On November 15, Mrs. Dolton's second grade class enjoyed Philly Fest -- the cumulative celebration at the end of their social students unit on Philadelphia. In true Philly fashion, students had cheesesteaks and Tastykakes for lunch and came to school dressed in their favorite Philly sports team shirt or in patriotic red and blue.

High School Trip Day

Posted 12/14/23

On Friday, November 10, high school students ventured out on their annual class trips.

Ninth graders visited the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center, Reading Terminal Market, and the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia.

Tenth graders explored Baltimore’s Inner Harbor including stops at the National Aquarium and Maryland Science Center.

The eleventh-grade class spent the day in Washington D.C. exploring the historic museums and monuments throughout the National Mall.

Seniors took to NYC and enjoyed a jam-packed day at Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 9/11 Memorial Fountains, Rockefeller Center, and Times Square.

We are praising God for the opportunity students have to explore the world around them, and most importantly for the safe trips that were had by all.

Grandparents' Days

Posted 12/14/23

Throughout the last month, we have had the pleasure of hosting the grandparents and grand-friends of our elementary students, Pre-K through 5th grade. Guests visited on three different days and enjoyed special time with their student. Some time was spent in the classrooms working on puzzles and brainteasers together, while other portions of the morning were spent in the gym playing board games and trying their hand (and bodies) at jump ropes and hula hoops! On each day, students performed a special concert for their guests to enjoy before heading home together for a much-anticipated early dismissal. Thank you to all the grandparents, grand-friends, and volunteers who make these days extra special.

America's White Table

Posted 11/13/23
This White Table was proudly displayed in Phil-Mont's main hallway this week to remind the students, faculty, and staff of the selfless sacrifice that veterans have made for our country. Teachers were encouraged to discuss the significance of the various elements on the table with their classes.

This tradition was started across the country during the Vietnam War as a symbol for and remembrance of prisoners of war and those service members missing in action. May we remember to give thanks to our veterans and to pray for those serving our country each day.

Cross Country STATE Results

Posted 11/09/23

Last week at the state competition, Phil-Mont's cross country runners submitted another fantastic round of times. Elaina Rainwater finished 19 out of 267 runners earning her a top 25 medal! Ryne Tyson finished 93 out of 272 runners. Ryne is only the second Falcon to qualify for the state competition in three consecutive years. Owen Tyson finished 141 out of 272 runners. He is the first freshman to qualify for states from Phil-Mont. Congratulations to all!

Running Toward States

Posted 10/30/23

Phil-Mont's cross country runners have enjoyed some big successes recently and are looking for more!

On Wednesday, October 18, the team participated in the Bicentennial Athletic League Championship race at Tyler State Park where junior Elaina Rainwater finished in first place and was crowned the BAL Girls Champion. Both Ryne and Owen Tyson also medaled in the race. Ryne finished 5th and Owen 14th out of 95 runners.

The following week on Friday, October 27 our runners headed to Lehigh University to compete in the PIAA District 1 Championship race. Elaina ran a personal best (19:46) and was named the PIAA District 1 "A" Champion! Impressively, Ryne finished 6th and Owen 14th out of 71 competitors. All three Falcons will advance to the PIAA State Championship meet.

Congratulations to the entire Phil-Mont team for recording their fastest times of the year at the District meet. The team has certainly enjoyed a successful and productive season.

A special thanks to the Rainwater/Kegarise and Tyson/Schwartz grandparent cheering section for faithfully following our runners throughout this journey toward States.

Erdenheim Cup Results

Posted 10/30/23

Phil-Mont hosted the annual Erdenheim Cup on October 17-18. The middle school boys and girls soccer teams competed against traveling rivals in two intense rounds of competition. The boys team finished in third place, knocking off TCA in the consolation game. The girls squad beat TCA in game one and then lost a hard-fought game with Faith Christian, 2-0 in the championship. All tournament team honors were given to Brent Cargua and Scarlett Gerhard.

The entire middle school came out to cheer on their classmates during their initial games. Congratulations to both teams!

"Count others more significant than yourselves..."

Posted 10/30/23
Each year, a dedicated group of 7th and 8th graders step forward to take on leadership roles in various service projects for the middle school. All those interested in joining the Middle School Service Committee must complete an application telling committee advisor, Miss Trego, why they are interested in serving, what causes are near and dear to their hearts already, and why it is important for Christians to serve. Members must also memorize Philippians 2:1-5.

Nine students comprise this year's Middle School Service Committee. Congratulations to Lydia Oliver, Scarlett Swaim, Layla Abbott, Amala Shane, Amelie McLain, Olive Larsen, Elianna Hsi, Jacqui Shoemaker, and Georgia Swaim.

The committee is already planning many of their initiatives for the 2023-24 school year.

5th Grade Science Fair

Posted 10/30/23

Mr. Roels challenged his fifth-grade students to complete a Science Fair project using either the scientific method or the design process. Students showcased their work to their peers, parents, and the high school chemistry students who served as judges.

The winning team was Evie Shaw and Harlym Howard for finding out which detergent cleans stains the best. Their experiments proved Tide the clear winner. Other notable experiments included: which fast food chain's french fries stay good the longest and which type of soil helps a seed grow the best. One team even designed a paper airplane launcher for those with physical disabilities who cannot throw airplanes.

Well done to all the fifth-grade students for demonstrating superb creativity!

WE ARE ... PHIL-MONT!

Posted 10/30/23

We love a good reason to celebrate at school. Despite a rainy Fall Classic this year, the school still gathered to celebrate our fall Falcons and recognize our senior athletes at an all-school pep rally.

Elementary students made signs and banners to celebrate the teams, and did some of their best screaming to cheer them on. We are thankful for a wonderful fall sports season. Congratulations to all the student athletes and coaches.

How many kids can you fit in the gaga pit?

Posted 10/30/23

We don't know -- but our elementary students are pushing the limits! October has given us a number of beautiful days for students to get outside and enjoy their recess times. Gaga, four-square, basketball... they never stop moving!

Back to School Cookout

Posted 9/29/23

More than 500 parents and students joined us last week at Phil-Mont's annual Back to School Cookout. It was a joy to celebrate the beginning of another year together. We are thankful for the opportunity to pray with one another for the students, families, teachers, Board members, and the 2023-24 school year that awaits us all.

Egg Drop Experiment

Posted 9/21/23

Mr. Roels challenged his fifth-grade students to find and test the safest way to drop an egg without breaking it. Students had to use the design process to conceptualize their idea, construct their structure, and test their creations.

What a fun way to review for their quiz!

Homeroom vs. Homeroom

Posted 9/21/23

Students battled one another in Phil-Mont's annual Middle School Kick Off Kapers last Friday. Homeroom teams participated in a variety of games and relays, seeking the coveted opportunity to display the prestigious Kapers Kup in their homeroom for the year.

It was a close-fought battle resulting in a tie for first place and forcing not one but two tie breakers to finally crown Miss Olinger's 8B homeroom as the winner!

Professor Emeritus

Posted 9/21/23
Phil-Mont's Head of School, Dr. Todd Mangum, was recently recognized as Professor Emeritus at Missio Seminary where he was previously employed for 25 years. Dr. Mangum served as Academic Dean from 2008-17 and 2021-23 and was the Lester and Kathryn Clemens Professor of Missional Theology.

First Grade Gets Medical

Posted 6/5/23
With the support of some of our wonderful parents, our 1st-grade classes enjoyed learning about the brain, the blood, and a variety of the other amazing parts of our bodies. The students saw how God designed us as creative works of his power and wisdom. The students enjoyed making fake blood (slime), brain hats, and body diagrams.

Handbell Concert

Posted 5/25/23

The High School Handbell Choir and members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society traveled to Gloria Dei Personal and Memory Care in Hatboro on Wednesday to share the joy of music with the residents. Sports Clinics Start

Posted 5/18/23

This week kicked off our annual Sports Clinics for grades 3-8. The mini-camps allow younger students to connect with Phil-Mont's high school coaches and sample what the athletics program is like for each of the highlighted sports. The Soccer Clinic hosted more than 30 students (90% elementary) who received intro training and feedback from varsity coaches Bustos and Olinger, along with Athletic Director Dolton. Upcoming clinics will include Tennis, Basketball, and Track/Cross Country.

Once completed, they had the devotional published through Barnes and Noble. Copies are available to purchase for $10 by emailing Mrs. Kratz

Shot Put Win

Posted 5/11/23

Congratulations to eighth grader Ava Ruff for winning first place in the shot put at the Colgate Women’s Games. Her record-setting performance of 13.15 meters crushed the previous 2008 record of 12.2 meters and earned her $2,000 to put toward her school tuition! Ava is an active member of the Mt. Airy Track Club under the tutelage of Coach Teri Bizzle.  Here at Phil-Mont, we are excited to continue watching Ava compete on the school’s track and field team as a Falcon.

Since 1972, the Colgate Women’s Games has provided young female athletes with the opportunity to compete for educational grants in one of the largest amateur track series in the United States. Thousands of girls participate each year.

Trig Students Play Catan

Posted 5/5/23

This week the high school Trigonometry class explored concepts of probability distributions using the popular board game, Settlers of Catan. The students had to engage in quantitative reasoning in order to decide where to build, whether to spend or save cards, and how to make advantageous trades with their opponents. Congratulations to Senior Naim Spencer-Grimes who won the championship round!

Pioneer School Day

Posted 4/28/23

A highlight of the third grade year is always Pioneer School Day. During the social studies unit on the pioneers and westward expansion, Ms. Gunn engages students with an interactive day filled with special activities. Third graders complete reading lessons from McGuffey readers, do arithmetic on slates, and make their own copybooks to practice writing. Students compete in a class spelling bee, create a pioneer craft, and even make their own butter. Ms. Gunn also has a dunce cap and stool in the corner ready for any of her misbehaving pioneers -- however we are confident she didn't need them this year!

Interact for Earth Day

Posted 4/24/23
Three of our HS Interacters along with their advisor, Mrs. V, spent a couple of hours on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, helping the Rotary Club of Springfield Township weed and spread mulch around the gazebo in Cisco Park. Geometry Mini-Golf

Posted 4/19/23

The Honors Geometry class went on a field trip to Freddy Hill Farms last Friday afternoon -- that's right, mini-golf and ice cream! Their thorough understanding of reflections and symmetry enabled each of them to figure out where to hit the ball so that it would bounce off the walls and directly into the hole. Five of them got a hole-in-one and some sweet extra credit! The trip ended with a quick stop in the dairy store for some even sweeter cookie monster ice cream.

Friday Sweats Fundraiser

Posted 4/13/23

The middle school held a second round of Friday Sweats during the month of March and it was a great success. Students paid $1 each Friday in March that they wanted to wear their sweatpants to school. Middle schoolers (who LOVE sweatpants), raised $250 throughout the month.

These funds will go toward Compassion International's Goat Project. A gift of a goat helps a family in three ways: it provides milk for the family, provides milk to sell, and helps to fertilize their farm. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped support this great cause.

Almost 200 couples attended the Heart to Heart Dance hosted by Families for Phil-Mont earlier this year. Organizers were grateful for the involvement from the Junior class officers in helping to plan the dance and getting out on the dance floor to encourage the elementary students to join in! Thanks to their support and some generous guest donations, the juniors received $650 to put toward their prom and other class events. Families for Phil-Mont will use the remaining funds raised at the dance to support the purchase of a new foosball table for the cafeteria. Organizers look forward to repeating this event again next year. Thank you to all those who participated!

Phil-Mont's 5th-grade classes received an introduction to middle school as Mr. Roupe's 7th-grade students shared a sheep heart dissection lab with them. A great way to learn is to teach, which the 7th graders successfully did. Check out this video for a closer look at students' experiences. It appears we have some budding scientists!

Black History Makers Assembly

Posted 2/24/23

Each year the Carter G. Woodson Society asks a Black History Maker to share their experience with the Phil-Mont community. This year we heard from Keyen Green, a 2016 Phil-Mont graduate. While at Phil-Mont, Keyen was the President of her class. She was also involved in the theater program, was a member of the National Honor Society, and excelled as a student athlete. She became the first basketball player in school history to finish with more than 1,400 points and 1,000 rebounds.

After graduating from Phil-Mont, Keyen went on to play division 1 basketball at Liberty University and then the University of Tennessee with the nationally-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers. She is also working toward a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies.

Keyen is known for her leadership on and off the court, her volunteer work with the Gift of Life program, and her academic excellence. We are thankful for Keyen’s willingness to share her experiences with our middle and high school students.

The assembly was led by Carter G. Woodson Society President, senior Queron Hope. Dr. Suggs, with the help of all of the CGWS members, led the auditorium in singing Lift Every Voice and Sing. Senior Jade King recited “Call Us” by Amanda Gorman and senior Maria Hormann recited Langston Hughes’ poem “Mother to Son.” The assembly concluded with a dance by cousins sophomore Jayla Coleman-Truesdale and eighth-grade student Samaia King. This assembly was certainly a group effort with many students working behind the scenes to celebrate our Journey to Excellence.

100th Day Celebrations!

Posted 2/24/23

Can you believe that Thursday, February 23 was our 100th day at Phil-Mont this year? Our elementary students came to school ready to celebrate. We are thankful for such creative teachers who came up with lots of ways to engage our youngest Falcons on this special day.

In the pre-k classrooms...
Students each brought in 100 things to share with the class. They broke the items down into 10 groups of 10 and practiced counting with a friend. Students collaborated on a mad lib about the 100th day. They also stretched their imaginations to consider what they would choose if they could have 100 of anything. They enjoyed building a castle with 100 blocks and using dot markers to cover 100 gumballs. In Bible they learned about the 10 lepers and imagined each had at least 10 spots. They celebrated how Jesus is enough to heal these spots and more. They also discussed how they should be thankful, like the one who returned to Jesus.

In the kindergarten classrooms...
Students dressed up as though they were 100 years old. They held a fashion show for their 5th grade buddies and practiced counting with them by ones, twos, fives and tens. They sorted 100 pieces of snacks into 10 groups of 10 and then enjoyed eating every bite! The class added 100 dots to a dog named "Spot" and later created structures with 100 cups. Students worked together to complete a 100 piece puzzle and drew pictures showing how they would spend $100. In Bible, they studied the Lost Sheep parable and discussed how the shepherd left the 99 to find the 1 lost sheep.

In first grade, students showed they weren't too old to get in on the fun as well. Mrs. Armbruster's class participated in a contest to see who could be the first to find and write down 100 words found in the classroom! Congratulations to Adin for his first place finish and Alexis who followed close behind.

Happy 100 days to the entire Phil-Mont community!

Wax Museum Exhibit

Posted 2/17/23

As part of Mr. Roel's social studies course, 4th-grade students did a stellar job representing various figures in their African American Wax Museum on Thursday morning, February 16. Each student gave a prepared speech about the African American hero they were depicting. Visitors to our cafeteria for the museum included parents, staff members, and other elementary classes.

Basketball Madness

Posted 2/15/23

Phil-Mont's middle school basketball teams came to play at the annual Middle School Madness Tournament hosted in the school's gymnasium. Teams from around the area came to compete in this two-day event. The Falcons proved victorious in both the girls and guys contests. Both coaches noted teamwork and unselfish play as major contributors to the teams' overall success in the tournament.

The girls started us off on Wednesday, February 8 beating both TCA and Cedar Grove to win the tournament title for the second year in a row.

The boys' team followed suit the next afternoon beating Cedar Grove 35-16 despite a slow start. Later in the championship game against Tri-State they proved victorious yet again with a score of 48-26.

A special congratulations to Ryan Copeland and Aubrei Smith for securing spots on the girls' all-tournament team. A similar tip of the hat to Owen Tyson and Jayden Doctor for earning all tournament honors.

High School Spirit Week

Posted 2/17/23

High School Spirit Week was a success! Over $500 was collected for the Interact Club's Compassion International sponsored child, Ivan.  Students paid $2 per day to wear special attire, including pajama pants and Falcon shirts on Thursday. Other days included wearing sports jerseys, Black History Month colors, red and pink shirts for Valentine's day, and everyone's favorite, sweatpants!

Do the ends justify the means?

Posted 2/16/23

The Honors 11th grade English class recently finished reading the stage play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. In this fictionalized account of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, a number of important questions arise, questions of good government, morality, and justice, among others.

Divided into teams, students scoured the Bible, the text of The Crucible, U.S. law, and historical documents to prepare their arguments for or against the death penalty, or whether or not the ends justify the means.  Arguing before their peers, each side presented opening remarks to lay out their line of reasoning. Then each side gave a rebuttal, attempting to refute what their opponents had said in their opening. Finally, each side gave their closing, a chance to reiterate their arguments and sway the audience to their way of thinking.

Each year, this exercise allows students to conduct research, construct arguments, think on their feet, and speak in front of peers, all while tackling some of the questions the world has been asking and answering for centuries. This year, Ryne Tyson won the "Best Dressed" award as well as "Best Debater" for his eloquent defense of the statement: the ends justify the means.

Lunar New Year's Celebration

Posted 1/30/23

On Thursday, January 26 Phil-Mont's International Club hosted nearly 100 students and families for the annual Lunar New Year's Celebration. Winter Wonders

Posted 1/30/23

Mrs. Briones and her Pre-K students have spent time over the last few weeks discussing what different animals do during the cold winter months. Their unit culminated with a classroom display of students' cuddly hibernating teddy bears.

Middle School Champions!

Posted 1/20/23

The boys middle school basketball team took the TCA (The Christian Academy) tournament by storm on January 17.  The first game featured balanced scoring as the guys cruised to a 49-21 victory. The championship game was a battle with a tough and talented Tri-State Christian squad. The teams traded haymakers early on in what looked to be a barn burner. That was until the guys turned up the heat defensively and systematically shut their opponents down with increasing effectiveness with each quarter till they raised the white flag in defeat. Join us in thanking God for granting us success and keeping everyone safe. Soli Deo Gloria.

MLK Jr. Day of Service

Posted 1/20/23

Phil-Mont's Interact Club and the Carter G. Woodson Society came together to serve the school community by volunteering their time on MLK Jr.'s Day of Service to create special announcements and posters for Black History month. They also created Valentine's Day cards that will be delivered to local nursing home residents.

Middle School Supports Compassion International

Posted 12/29/22

In early November, Phil-Mont's middle school became the official sponsor of a five-year-old little girl, Djamilatou who lives in the African country of Burkina Faso. Each month, the middle school must raise $38 for Djamilatou. Their weekly soda sale proceeds go toward her sponsorship as well as donations by students and faculty.

Additionally, throughout November and December, middle school students enjoyed wearing their sweatpants to school on Fridays -- and for a good cause! Students paid one dollar each week and all proceeds went to Compassion's Water Well Project. Every $100 raised buys a well for a family. The middle school rallied and raised a total of $210, securing funding for two wells, serving two families.

Multiple Choice Study Halls

Posted 12/16/22

Phil-Mont's middle school teachers show their creativity to keep students engaged. This fall, teachers debuted "multiple choice study halls" for students to select from. Students were given the option of which 40 minute teacher-led session they wanted to attend. Choices included: kickboxing, Pictionary, ultimate frisbee, soccer, naptime (complete with BYO blanket and pillow), movie time, and dramatic poetry reading. The experiment proved a major success!

Booth Construction

Posted 12/16/22

Phil-Mont's 7th graders are studying "The Feasts of the Old Testament" in Middle School Bible. Last week, students were introduced to the Feast of Tabernacles, also called the Feast of Booths, and they exercised their knowledge by building fragile booths of their own. These booths are characterized by palm branch roofs, three walls, and hanging fruit to celebrate the end of the harvest season and God's faithful provision. Learning about this Old Testament feast points students to the incarnate Christ who “tabernacled among us.” He is Immanuel, God with us!

Reformation Day Writing Contest

Posted 11/3/22

Each year, at the end of October, Phil-Mont commemorates Church History Week. The week’s observation is always in conjunction with Reformation Day, October 31, the anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. October 31, 1517 was the date on which the monk, Martin Luther, challenged the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church at the time by nailing his 95 Theses on the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany.

As per tradition, the Phil-Mont History Department once again held its annual Reformation Day Writing Contest. This year marks the 500th anniversary of Luther’s translation of the New Testament into German. In recognition of this event, the topic for both the middle school and high school was "Every tribe and tongue!" - reflections on the 500th anniversary of Luther’s translation of the New Testament into German.

As always, excellent essays were submitted. Follow these links to this year’s winning essays by Timothy Curcuruto in the high school and Madda Larsen in the middle school. The accompanying photos are of the overall winners for both levels. Middle school: Madda Larsen (1st), Lydia Oliver (2nd), Layla Abbott (3rd), and Lonnie Thomas (HM). High school: Timothy Curcuruto (1st), Marcos Cedeno (2nd), Sofia Lima (3rd), Julie Lesshafft (HM), and J.R. Della Rocca (HM).

Congratulations to the winners!

Doubles Tennis Tournament

Posted 10/14/22

On Tuesday, October 11, tennis partners Kayla Suggs with Elaina Rainwater and Jordyn Caison with Grace Wulin represented Phil-Mont at the indoor BAL Doubles Tennis Tournament. Jordyn and Grace represented the team well, making their opponents work hard for their points. Kayla and Elaina won their first match easily and played very exciting doubles tennis in their second match against the top-seated team from DelCo. Great job Falcons!

Trip to Army vs. Navy Game

Posted 10/14/22

Phil-Mont's boys varsity soccer team traveled to the Philly Union's stadium in Chester, PA to watch the Army vs. Navy soccer game on October 7. Team members were joined by coaches Dr. Chi and Mr. Bustos. Army won the game 2-0.

Generous Donation Received

Posted 10/14/22

At its October 3 meeting, Families for Phil-Mont received a $1000 check from Mr. Mo Valdemar from Bryner Chevrolet. This substantial donation will go a long way in helping Families for Phil-Mont plan events throughout the year for Phil-Mont students. Thank you Mr. Valdemar for your generosity.

Falcon College Sightings

Posted 10/14/22

A number of Falcon soccer alumni have continued to display their skills at the collegiate level. Audrey Chapman ('22) was recently featured on the Washington and Jefferson website for her match-high four shots on goal last week verse Waynesburg. Johanna Shaw ('20) and Hannah Franchois ('20) are current Highlanders at Cairn University and Savannah Rennix ('19) is a forward for the Millersville Marauders. All four college athletes have siblings who are current Phil-Mont students.

See You At The Pole

Posted 9/30/22

This past Wednesday, students participated in See You At the Pole, a student-led event that encourages schools across the country to gather together in prayer. National Honor Society members organized Phil-Mont's participation in the event with 12 students joining in prayer for our world. Specifically, attendees prayed for our country, the armed services, the local community, and Phil-Mont as a whole. This early morning time together was certainly a blessing to all who came out.

Into The Wild

Posted 9/30/22

Last week, Mrs. Woo took her middle school English class on a hike out to the backyard of Phil-Mont, also known as "the wild," to explore their surroundings. In true Sam Gribely fashion, they searched for elements in the area that would help them to make a home in the wilderness if they were ever to take an adventure like the one Sam takes in My Side of the Mountain. Ask any sixth grade student what resources they would use to survive in the wild, and they will be more than ready to share their research with you!

Back-to-School Picnic

Posted 9/16/22

More than 500 parents and students joined us last Friday for Phil-Mont's annual Back-to-School Picnic. Families enjoyed the beautiful weather, delicious food, and plenty of time to catch up with others in our school community. We look forward to bringing glory to God this year as we strive to provide excellent Christian education to all our students. Thank you for partnering with us!

Marshmallow Sculptures

Posted 9/16/22

Mrs. Shaw commemorated the first day of school by having her English classes work together to construct marshmallow sculptures. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors were tasked with becoming the engineers of these confectionery treats all while learning about collaboration, communication, negotiation, and innovation.

Trip to See the Philadelphia Union

Posted 9/16/22

To celebrate two successful weeks of preseason, the high school girls' soccer team recently took a trip to see the MLS's Philadelphia Union take on the Colorado Rapids at Subaru Park in Chester, PA. This is the team's second annual trip to cheer on the Union. The Lady Falcons are focused on playing with confidence, intelligence, and Christian character throughout this season.

Elementary Jump Rope Competition

Posted 6/15/22

A highlight of the spring PE experience is the Elementary Jump Rope Competition. Students in grades 1-5 compete against classmates (and themselves!) to increase the number of jumps they can do in a set amount of time.

The competition ended last week with an awards ceremony recognizing students with the most jumps in each grade as well as those students who showed the most improvement throughout the competition. Congratulations to all our jumpers who practiced hard and received trophies and medals. A special shout-out to fourth grader Hattie Oliver who jumped away as this year's overall champion!

High School Awards

Posted 6/2/22

On Wednesday, May 25, high school teachers stopped to recognize the many accomplishments of their students. Teachers gave awards for academic achievements, stewardship, and participation in  numerous clubs and ensembles.

A highlight of this special time was the premiere of this year's senior video. Directed and produced by students, this video asked seniors to answer hard-hitting questions such as: Where do you see yourself in 20 years?; What will you miss most about Phil-Mont?; and Which teachers have impacted you the most?

The video evoked nostalgia, prompted many laughs, and ultimately uncovered a secret mystery sandwich stashed in a locker three years ago.

Eggs, chicks, and goslings- oh my!

Posted 5/19/22

Pre-K and kindergarten students had  lots to be excited about this week. After spending a few weeks as eggs in an incubator, the chicks in Miss Natter's classroom finally hatched. Students were able to hold them (carefully!) and watch them scurry around. Kindergarten students celebrated "K for Kindness" day, by showing kindness to the baby goslings living by the pond. Students fed them one of their favorite snacks, frozen peas. To top the week off, a mama duck laid four eggs on the Pre-K and kindergarten playground! Students have been keeping a close watch on them while being careful not to get too close.

Medical School Visit

Posted 4/29/22

The Anatomy and Physiology class visited the gross anatomy lab at Drexel Medical School on April 20. These juniors and seniors, accompanied by Mrs. Hilary Kratz, were instructed by medical students who showed the class the human bodies they were dissecting. Some of Phil-Mont’s Anatomy and Physiology students are considering a path to medical school and this trip proved as a great confirmation for their choice!

Big Ball Four Square

Posted 3/18/22

How do middle school students (and teachers) celebrate the end of standardized testing? With a game of Big Ball Four Square in the gym, or course. Mr. DeHeer hosted the event last Friday to mark the end of a busy and academically rigorous week. Faculty and staff impressively occupied one of the squares as an added incentive for students to give it their all.

Not sure what Big Ball Four Square is? Think volleyball without a net and with an epically large sphere. Still not sure? Check out the video to see exactly how it’s done.

Live Theater @ Phil-Mont

Posted 3/16/22

On Tuesday, March 15, The Carter G. Woodson Society sponsored a one-act play titled, A Life in Three Dresses–The Story of Elizabeth Keckley. The play is based on the life story of Ms. Keckley and her amazing rise out of slavery into working in the Lincoln White House and the fallout that followed. The drama is written by a Philadelphia native, Shav'on Smith and features another Philadelphia native, Tanya O'Neil, who portrays Elizabeth Keckley.

All students in fifth through twelfth grade were invited to watch the play this week and high school students had the unique opportunity to meet Ms. Smith and Ms. O’Neil to ask questions and learn more about their production.

Before the event, teachers provided students with background information during their classes to help give context before viewing the production. Thank you to The Carter G. Woodson Society for bringing live theater to Phil-Mont and helping to support these local artists.

Make a Joyful Noise

Posted 3/18/22

Did you know that every Friday, elementary students gather to start their morning with Chapel? Recently, Mrs. Liegel served as chapel speaker. She taught students how frequently God's people forgot His faithfulness, and encouraged students to learn God's Word so they can remember His promises.

ACSI Results

Posted 3/11/22

On Monday, more than 90 middle school and high school students traveled to Cairn University to participate in ACSI's Fine Arts Festival. The results of their work were encouraging and gratifying. The High School and Middle School Concert Bands and Jazz Bands all earned the Superior rating (the top score in the category). Additionally High School A Capella and Middle School Select Choir both earned Excellent ratings.

The high school art students earned 9 Excellent ratings and 11 Superior ratings for their outstanding artwork. Malia McJay, Jeremy Francois, and Paul Zhou received Superior ratings for their artwork with Patrick Luo earning 3 Superior ratings for his artwork. The following students received a Superior rating and were rated the highest of their category thus winning their category: Aaron Huang (2 awards), Malia McKay, Thomas DeHeer and Kayla Suggs. Kayla Suggs earned a perfect score for her art piece titled Undecided (self-portrait).

The students also had an opportunity to view other performances and art pieces, and to be challenged and inspired to even greater accomplishments in the future. This reminds us that we, being made in God's image, are also creative beings. The expression of that creativity is a blessing, both as a maker and an observer.

Congratulations to all the students who participated!

Philly Fest

CPosted 3/11/22

Mrs. Dolton's second grade class recently celebrated Philly Fest to wrap up their unit on the City of Brotherly Love. Students wore Philly sports jerseys and enjoyed eating cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, Tastykakes, water ice, and root beer -- all things Philly!

Literary Discussion

Posted 3/11/22

Mrs. Woo's seventh grade English class recently participated in a group discussion of the book, The View From Saturday, which they have been studying in class. Students engaged in fruitful discussion, dissecting various passages to understand the meaning of symbolism and appreciating the writing style and techniques of the author, E.L. Konigsburg.

Create a Restaurant

Posted 3/4/22

To finish out their mathematics unit on percentages, Mrs. Errickson’s seventh-grade students participated in a Create a Restaurant project. Students were responsible for designing their restaurant, creating menus, and even establishing a signature dish. The culmination of the project occurred last week with the restaurants' grand openings!

Various faculty and staff members served as the customers. Students were responsible for taking orders and determining the correct tax and tip. Some students even brought in their newly-created signature dishes for their customers to enjoy.

Elementary Spirit

Posted 3/4/22

Who has school spirit? Our teachers do!

The elementary hallway has had much to celebrate these past few weeks. Faculty members celebrated Teaching on Twosday 2-22-22 in style with matching t-shirts and even a few “two-twos”.

The kindergarten teachers kept the fun rolling into this week by celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Wednesday with a classroom favorite, Hat Day!

Thank you to all the faculty and staff who eagerly look for ways to engage with our students. We are grateful for each of you.

Constellation Sightings

Posted 3/4/22

Mr. Roupe treated his sixth-grade astronomy lab to a constellation scavenger hunt one afternoon within the comforts of Phil-Mont’s auditorium. Students used the app, Night Sky, to locate various constellations.

Mr. Roupe gave students clues, including history and mythology, to help them identify a specific constellation. Once the students could name the constellation he was looking for, they had to move their iPad around the auditorium until they were able to locate the desired star grouping. They then had to sketch the constellation’s outline before moving on to the next set of clues.

Celebrating the 100th Day

Posted 2/25/22

Wednesday, February 16, was our 100th day of school! Pre-K, kindergarten, and first grade students celebrated this accomplishment with a variety of activities, excitement, and LOTS of gray hair.

Celebrations included:

Congratulations to all Phil-Mont students for completing 100 days of school!

Black History Makers

Posted 2/25/22

Last Wednesday, the Carter G. Woodson Society presented the Black History Makers Assembly, "Journey to Excellence" during Chapel. Prior to the assembly, students conducted an interview with Kelly (Beard) Chappelle, a business owner and pastor, who was featured along with her sisters on Shark Tank for their LuLu Bang Sauce in 2016. Kelly shared wisdom with the students about running a business and much more. Society members also led the student body in singing, pictured here.

This month, the bulletin board across from the chapel is dedicated to telling the stories of prominent African American women. Pictured here, Mrs. Armbruster is highlighting some of these women to her first grade class as they travel the hallway.

Pre-K Pet Unit

posted 2/25/22

Last week, Miss Natter’s Pre-K students began their two-week unit on pets. Our youngest Falcons are learning about different kinds of house pets and how to take care of them. Middle School Science and Social Studies teacher, Mr. Don Roupe delighted the class by bringing in his pet guinea pig for them to observe and hold.

Debate

Posted 2/25/22

Eleventh grade Honors English students recently finished reading the stage play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller. In this fictionalized account of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, a number of important questions arise, including questions regarding good government, morality, and justice.

Divided into teams, students scoured the Bible, the text of The Crucible, U.S. law, and historical documents to prepare their arguments for or against the death penalty. Teams considered whether or not the ends justify the means, whether or not lying is ever acceptable, and where power should reside to create a just society. Arguing before their peers, each team presented opening remarks to lay out their line of reasoning. Each side then gave a rebuttal, attempting to refute what their opponents had said in their opening. Finally, each team gave their closing, a chance to reiterate their arguments and sway the audience to their way of thinking.

Every year, this exercise allows students to conduct research, construct arguments, think on their feet, and speak in front of peers, all while tackling some of the questions the world has been asking and answering for centuries.

High School Spirit Week

Posted 2/18/22

The High School Interact Club sponsored a spirit week, this week, as a fundraiser. Students could pay $2 a day to participate each day. The week raised nearly $600 for Samaritan's Purse Afghan Refugee Ministry! The days included Sports Jerseys, Pajama Pants, Black History colors, 70s & 80s attire, and Falcon Friday. Below are a few images from the week.

Basketball Pep Rally

Posted 2/11/22

With the Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams moving on to the BAL playoffs, the whole school gathered in the gym for a celebratory pep rally which included the Boys' team cutting the nets down as repeat BAL Constitution Champions.  Both Varsity teams will be in playoff action on Monday, February 14th, when the girls go to Delaware County Christian School at 4 pm and the boys will host Renaissance Academy Charter School at 6 pm.

Photos from the rally are posted below.

Elementary Chapel

Posted 2/11/22

This morning (2/11), Miss Sutliff’s fourth-grade students led the elementary chapel with a beautiful song that repeated the refrain, “I’m going to Heaven, I can’t wait!”. Afterward, the rest of the elementary students joined them as Mr. Stewart led them in singing “Be Thou My Vision.”

Dr. Donald Dawes, former Head Master at Open Door, was today’s guest speaker. He spoke to students of the importance of friendship as he traced Jonathan and David’s friendship through scripture. He emphasized how important it is to be a good and loyal friend.

We are thankful for the many ways that the chapel program is helping our elementary students to grow deep roots in God’s Word.

Middle School Madness Tournament

posted 2/11/22

For the first time in more than 5 years, BOTH the boys' and girls' middle school basketball teams captured championship trophies at our annual Middle School Madness Tournament. Check out the tournament recaps below.

MS Girls

After three years, the Lady Falcons have at last brought home the MS Madness Tournament trophy! Mary Haviland, who put up 14 points, led the team with tenacious defense, smart passing, and wisdom during team huddles—earning herself a spot on the all-tournament team. Aubrei easily handled TCA and CGA's full-court pressure—two whole games of it! And how about that buzzer-beating three? Beautiful! Victoria and Cayla had rockstar games with 14 and 12 points respectively. And don't forget Scarlett's baseline jumper, or Korinne's stealthy rebounds and clutch tie-ups for the jump ball. The Falcons greatly appreciated the fan support from their Middle School peers—thank you, everyone, for being so loud and proud! Soli Deo Gloria!

MS Boys

The MS boys certainly brought the "madness" to the middle school madness tournament this week. After getting off to a torrid 16-0 "perfect" start, the boys saw their lead literally evaporate into thin air and found themselves down 23-20 going into the final frame. It got even worse before it got better...with 2 1/2 min to go the boys were now down 29-20...looking "dead in the water".  That's when the madness took over...Joey hits a huge 3, Amir and Jayden hit 2 buckets in a row each, and miraculously the guys took the lead with 45 sec to go. Things were still a bit dicey as the clock winded down, but with a few seconds to go Ethan put the game away for good. The guys took care of business in the second game and captured the trophy. Working hard for the Lord...not for man...To Him be the praise!

Rewards Abound

Posted 2/11/22

Mrs. Armbruster’s first-grade class enjoys participating in a falcon ticket system. Students can earn tickets each day by being respectful, responsible, and caring. Students can cash in their tickets for various prizes such as a falcon tattoo or a “no homework” pass. They can also redeem their tickets for special opportunities like feeding the class fish, bringing in a stuffed animal for the day, eating lunch with a teacher, or earning extra recess time.

This week, multiple students redeemed their falcon tickets for the chance to dine with one of their specials teachers, Mr. Stewart (music), Mr. Liegel and Mr. Bustos (art), and Mr. D (gym). Great job first graders!

Tastes like Math

posted 2/10/22

This week, Mrs. VanVeldhuizen's eighth-grade algebra students explored radioactive decay the delicious way - with M&Ms!

Each student was given a Dixie cup full of radioactive M&Ms (they were really just regular M&Ms). When they rolled the M&Ms out onto a plate, the M&Ms that were M face down were safe to eat because they were no longer radioactive (or so they pretended). The ones that were M face up were put back in the cup and the trial was repeated until all of the M&Ms were no longer radioactive. The students recorded the data for each trial, then graphed the results and used exponential regression on a graphing calculator to find an exponential model for the data. This activity demonstrated the "half life" of radioactive materials since the probability that an M&M will land with the M face up is 0.5 or 50%.

Who knew that exponential decay could be so yummy and fun?!

Interstellar Math

posted 2/11/22

Mrs. Errickson’s 8th-grade pre-algebra class recently completed a project on scientific notation.  Students spent time on NASA’s website researching details on four planets, including their mass, volume, and circumference. The data was collected in standard form and then students had to change it into scientific notation.

Students were asked to create their own planet, designed within the reasonable limits of existing planets. Created planet proposals included a history of the planet and details on what moons, types of agriculture, and even what extraterrestrial life would exist within their planet’s orbit.  Students produced a travel brochure highlighting their proposed planet and enthusiastically tried to persuade the class, and Mrs. Errickson, why they should choose this planet as their next vacation destination!

PMEA Concert Band Reps

posted 1/21/22

The Phil-Mont Instrumental Music program had the pleasure of having five students audition for the PMEA District 11 Band. This is a rigorous process and is highly competitive. Two of those students scored high enough to participate in the ensemble and will be representing Phil-Mont in the 2022 PMEA Concert Band.

Senior Malia McKay placed as 9th chair flute and sophomore Laura Chapman as 3rd chair bassoon. Congratulations to both of these young ladies. We celebrate your pursuit of musical excellence! May you continue to honor God and bring glory to Him through your many talents and abilities.

The PMEA Concert Band will perform on Friday, January 28th at 7:00pm at Pennsbury High School East. All are welcome to attend. Tickets are available at the door.

NHS Leads in Giving

Posted 11/19/21

National Honor Society members wish to thank everyone who helped us to collect almost 1000 items of food goods to give to Operation Brotherhood! Operation Brotherhood is a program sponsored and run by Skilton House Ministries, designed to provide Thanksgiving meals to more than one thousand local families in need each year. Collecting food for Operation Brotherhood has become a fall tradition at Phil-Mont, so we were proud and thankful to have so much to donate once again this year. Thank you!

Giving Thanks Together

Six senior boys at Phil-Mont decided to organize their own Thanksgiving meal together on the last day before break. It was their "Friendsgiving".

Honoring Our Veterans

posted 11/19/21

In recognition of Veterans Day last Thursday, November 11, Phil-Mont delivered cards to the resident veterans at the Paper Mill Road Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wyndmoor. Included with the cards were other items designed to recognize and thank these men and women for their service to our country in the United States Armed Forces. The cards were designed by all ages at Phil-Mont from Pre-K through high school. Please note the delighted faces of some of the recipients. A big thank you to all who have served and continue to serve our country today!

GIVING THANKS WITH K/5th BUDDIES

Posted 11/19/21

Today, students took some time to celebrate Thanksgiving (and their much-deserved Fall Break)! Celebrations included special time this morning shared between kindergarteners and their fifth-grade buddies where they enjoyed pie (with lots of whipped cream) and spent time making special turkey hats together all while discussing the many things they have to be thankful for. Click through the pictures to see some of the activities.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD RESULTS

Posted 11/19/21

Thank you again to all who participated in Operation Christmas Child (OCC) this year. This annual Christmas project has become a fantastic way for our students to get involved in the evangelism and discipleship of children all around the world. Between the items brought in by the elementary students and the already gift-filled shoeboxes brought in by the middle school students, we were able to assemble, collect, and donate 110 shoeboxes to OCC.

Thank you to all families who generously donated supplies, money for shipping, gift-filled shoeboxes, and time. Many thanks to the elementary teachers for their support and to the middle school service committee and the high school Interact Club for putting in extra time during collection week. It is truly “more blessed to give than to receive!”

See You at the Pole

posted 9/24/21

Wednesday morning, Phil-Mont high school students joined with high school students from across the country to pray for our school, our country, and our world at the annual See You at the Pole event. National Honor Society provided doughnuts, coffee, and juice, and helped to lead in prayer. Although originally scheduled to meet around the flagpole in front of the school, a sprinkle of rain sent everyone hurrying for the dry safety of Mrs. Shaw's room. Refreshments were reset and everyone broke into groups to pray: 9th grade prayed for the ongoing recovery from Hurricane Ida, 10th grade prayed for the political situation in Afghanistan and in the U.S., 11th grade prayed for the continuing Covid pandemic, and 12th grade prayed for the needs and concerns of the Phil-Mont family. Everyone came back together for a final word of prayer, a final donut, and then headed off to class for the day.

What a privilege to be able to gather to pray as a community of students locally at Phil-Mont and with believing students around the country!

C.L.E.W

Posted 9/24/21

This week at Phil-Mont was Christian Life Emphasis Week (CLEW). Elementary, middle, and high school students participated in a variety of activities including watching a video series, engaging in interactive class discussions, and attending special Chapel presentations featuring skits and involvement from our faculty and staff. This year’s CLEW program addressed the topic of doubt. Students were challenged to examine instances of doubt in scripture as well as specific doubts they face as individuals. The faculty concluded the week by reminding students of the hope that can only be found in Christ.

Off to a Great Start!

Almost 400 students, parents, and siblings attended last week's Back to School Cookout. Attendees mingled over a hot dog dinner with all the fixings and a dessert table that was overflowing with sugary treats. The evening was capped off with a time of prayer led by Phil-Mont Board members where they asked for God's blessing over the year ahead. Thank you to all who joined us. We look forward to more opportunities to gather throughout the year.

Sixth Grade Feasts on Venison Stew

Posted 9/17/21

This week in Miss Olinger’s sixth grade English class students savored bowls of venison stew and learned to use a flint all while listening to a recording of authentic night woods. The experience led students to a better, first-hand understanding of the adventure classic, My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George.

Ron is pictured here helping to install a soot fence to keep mud off the tennis courts during heavy rains.

Ron Bierema is Back Serving on the Tennis Courts and in the Classroom!

posted 9/9/21

Ron Bierema, one of our beloved high school mathematics teachers and tennis coach, suffered severe complications from COVID-19 at the end of March 2021. He was in the hospital for more than 30 days with the doctors debating whether or not he might need a heart transplant. We finished last school year missing his presence in the classroom and on the courts.

We are thankful that over the summer the Lord restored Mr. Bierema's heart to good health! He has returned to teaching high school math part-time and is again serving the school by helping to coach the girls' tennis team. We praise God for His miraculous restoration of Ron and rejoice in Mr. Bierema's return to the Phil-Mont family!

Happy 78th Birthday to us!

posted 9/7/21

Phil-Mont's first day of class was 78 years ago, today (originally named Willow Grove Christian Day School). We are the same age as the disco-era singer, Gloria Gaynor, who is famous for singing "I Will Survive". Phil-Mont started with only 3 grades and 17 students, and with God's continual provision, we have done more than simply "survive". We have thrived for His kingdom. May He continue to bless us with years of faithfulness to our mission and His glory.
