Middle and high school students were treated to a performance by Calvin University's vocal ensemble Calvin Capella. The group is currently on their East Coast Tour and made a stop at Phil-Mont's campus today to perform during chapel. Led by Dr. Mark Stover and accompanied by Kenneth Bos, the college vocalists performed a number of lively and complex songs and even encouraged students to stand up and join in singing with them on one number. They demonstrated real musicianship and stage presence. Hopefully today was an encouragement to our own vocal students to continue pursuing their passion for music!

Students in grades 5-8 were invited to participate in both elementary and middle school chess clubs. During club meetings, hosted by Mr. Bierema, students were taught the fundamentals of the game and honed their skills by competing in chess matches against each other. The clubs culminated in multi-hour tournaments this past weekend, where students went head-to-head. Congratulations to all the students for working hard this year to improve their game!

Phil-Mont's fourth graders shined this week at their Wax Museum! Each student selected and thoroughly researched a notable African American. Their hard work culminated in Thursday's Wax Museum where students dressed as their subject and presented their displays and research to visiting parents and fellow students. As guests pressed the booth's button, the student presenter came alive and spoke about their subject's life, accomplishments, and how they influenced society. Well done fourth graders!

On Friday, February 20, students in fifth and eighth grade got a taste of what life will look like next year at Phil-Mont. Fifth graders followed a middle school schedule for the entire day. They heard from each middle school teacher about what fun things they can expect in their classes. Teachers also provided a preview of the middle school clubs and sports that students can look forward to. Fifth graders experienced their first lunch in the cafeteria, and even got to purchase items from the vending machine - another middle school perk!
Eighth-grade students were paired with a current high schooler who they shadowed for the day. They attended classes and club meetings for a sneak peek into the benefits of being a high schooler. Instrumentalists even had the opportunity to play with the high school band, which was both exciting and challenging.
We look forward to ushering these fifth and eighth graders into their next chapter here at Phil-Mont.

Show 'n Share of students' 100 collections.
Dressing up like you are 100 years old.
Listening to the parable of the lost sheep.
Making necklaces with 100 fruit loops.
Building structures with 100 cups.
Some of our students in twelfth grade even joined in the fun and came to school as "senior" citizens.

Earlier this month, Phil-Mont hosted its annual Erdenheim Cup, and invited rival middle school soccer teams to compete in this end-of-season tradition. The Lady Falcons took on TCA in the championship game which ended in a 0-0 tie. With the trophy on the line, teams entered an intense penalty kick shootout to decide the victor. Hannah, Mackenzie, and Sierra knocked in their shots, and Susie sealed the deal in goal with a strong save. What an exciting way to finish out the year. Congrats to the team!

The winners of this year's Reformation Day Writing Contest were announced Wednesday in Chapel. Participating students submitted their essays celebrating the 500th anniversary of Tyndale's English New Testament. Students were given this prompt: William Tyndale promised that if God spared his life, someday soon a plowboy would know more of God's Word than a priest. Why was that such a radical idea in Tyndale's lifetime? How might the Bible still turn the world upside down today - or even challenge us personally?
Congratulations to the following students who were selected as the winning authors:
High School
1st place: Namia David
2nd place: Elianna Hsi
Honorable Mention: Vivien Trott
Middle School
1st place: Charis Porcella
2nd place: Genesis Hicks
Honorable Mention: Rhiannon Montgomery
High school students also learned about the 95 Theses, Martin Luther, Thomas Cranmer, and several other reformers in Bible class this week. They even got some hands-on practice with the lesson by posting a "95 Reese's" tribute on the Library entrance dedicated to all the reformers.

Phil-Mont hosted admissions representatives from 20 colleges and universities at the College Fair on Wednesday. After high school students finished the PSATs/SATs, they headed to the College Fair where they were able to visit the various booths and learn about the degree programs available and important financial aid offerings from schools.
Thank you to Dean Morris for organizing this valuable resource for students and families! It is exciting to consider where Falcons will choose to enroll after graduating from Phil-Mont.

In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, five firefighters from the Flourtown Fire Company visited our Pre-K classrooms for an exciting and educational morning. Students enjoyed playing a game of "Hot or Not" where the firefighters showed them pictures of common items found throughout the house and they had to shout out whether or not the item was dangerous.
Firefighters also spoke with students about the importance of smoke detectors, family escape routes, and safe meeting places in case of an emergency. Mrs. Montgomery even volunteered to wear all the firefighter gear, which admittedly was quite heavy! The morning culminated in a trip outside to explore the firetruck and get a close look at the crew's tools and equipment.
Thank you to the Flourtown Fire Company for taking the time to visit Phil-Mont and increase our youngest Falcons' fire safety awareness.

On Friday, September 26, Dean Morris hosted a Career Fair for our middle school and high school students. Tables were set up throughout the gym, each one featuring a Phil-Mont parent or other professional representative who shared the joys and challenges of their chosen career. A wide range of professions were represented. Students were encouraged to visit each table to learn more about the profession and ask questions.
Thank you to all our parents who came out to support the Career Fair! We know your time is valuable, and we appreciate you spending the afternoon with us.
Congratulations to these select middle school students for earning top marks on the Career Fair reflection assignment. Their thoughtful responses successfully summarized what they learned while also projecting how they may apply these lessons to their potential future careers. The following students each earned a coupon to Ms. Bacon's Candy Shop:
Grade 6 - Elliot Oursler and Aleezah Peeples
Grade 7 - Susie Oelschlegel and Mackenzie Badzura
Grade 8 - Ellie Evans Wilson, Makenzie Hardy, and Simeon Peeples
The MS homeroom with the highest percentage of participation - a whopping 94% - earning them each a Middle School Buck was 6B!

Last Friday, homeroom battled homeroom in Phil-Mont's 54th annual Middle School Kick-Off Kapers. Students participated in a variety of games and relays, seeking the coveted Kapers Cup trophy which will be displayed in the winning homeroom for the year.
It was a close-fought battle, but in the end Miss Olinger's 8B homeroom was crowned the winner. Congratulations to all the students! What an entertaining way to start the year together.
