Highlights

• Nanoporous NiO nanosheets-based nanohybrid materials have been synthesized

• The developed nanohybrid materials were applied as CEs od DSCs. 

• The trend of catalytic activity was NiO-Pt > Pt sputtering > NiO-Cdot > NiO-PEDOT:PSS > NiO. 

• The highest efficiency of 9.66% was obtained for cell with NiO-Pt electrode.

• Bimetallic PtSe nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) are prepared by dry plasma reduction.

• The electrocatalytic activity as well as electric conductivity is significantly enhanced.

• The highest efficiency is recorded from DSC employed Pt0.5Se0.5/RGO CE.

• The strategy is for optimizing Pt utilization in PV-device using bimetallic nanoparticles.
