Finding Word Meanings from Context Clues

  Often you can learn the meaning of an unfamiliar word from the context in which it is used.
Sometimes we don't have to look up the meaning of the unknown words in a dictionary.
We can guess the meanings through CONTEXT CLUES. There are several types of CONTEXT CLUES.

Definition Type

  The definition of each of the unknown words is given in the expression that comes right after or before it

Restatement Type

   We can find the meaning of the unknown word from the idea repeated in the known word.

Cause-and-Effect Relationship Type

  The meanings of the unknown words are not directly given, but they are shown through the cause and effect relationship of the situation.

Contrast Type

In some sentences we will find two words with opposite meanings. If we know the meaning of one word, we will be able to guess the meaning of the other word
