Dr. Melissa M. DeAngelo is currently the Director of English Language Education for the Pascagoula-Gautier School District. She also serves on the Mississippi Department of Education’s English Learner Advisory Council. She has served in roles as a principal, assistant director and lead teacher. She has taught at the middle school and collegiate levels. She also taught community classes for English as a Second Language. Her dissertation "Is there a correlation between differentiating instruction and English language learner achievement?" was selected as the top dissertation for the Department Educational Leadership and School Counseling at the University of Southern Mississippi. She has recently received recognition by Hispanic Outreach and Leadership Alliance (HOLA) for her work with English learners and their families.
This video shares a few strategies to assist with the language barriers that exists with parents and students. Strategies and educational tools to be used include Google translate to translate documents and assignments, websites, and conversations. We will also look at adding subtitle in the students native language in Youtube.
