T-Charts are two-column charts that can be adapted for a variety of purposes. Most often, T-Charts are used when students are examining two facets of a topic or idea like comparing differences. T-Charts are also useful for listing pros and cons, advantages/ disadvantages, separating facts and opinions, and separating key details and supporting ideas. Another use for T-Charts is when constructing double entry journals. The left column can be used for specific details and the right column can be used for related thinking and/or interpretations.
A Venn Diagram contains partially overlaying circles and is often used to organize similarities/differences and comparisons/contrasts. Most Venn Diagrams contain two circles, but variations can be made when more than two ideas or concepts are being compared.
A KWL chart includes 3-columns that organize what students Know, what they Want to know, and what they Learned. This organizer is often used before new learning to capture background knowledge as a means of activating thinking, and then again after learning to summarize what was learned. Other variations of KWL include KWHL and KNWS.
A sequence chain helps student organize ideas or concepts by time or event order.
