In keeping with our goals to ensure that every child is college and career ready, Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) high school juniors and seniors have the opportunity to earn college credit, while still in high school through the Dual Enrollment Program.

Dual Enrollment Program Background: The College Readiness and Completion Act of 2013, Senate Bill 740 establishes a number of requirements designed at increasing college readiness and degree completion in the State. The bill includes a number of specific higher education initiatives from across the nation into a streamlines legislative act. The Bill’s targeted initiatives include dual enrollment (providing eligible high school students the opportunity to take college courses). You may be eligible for participation.

PGCPS will pay tuition for all students dually enrolled in qualified courses at any Maryland public college or university. Fees and textbooks will be paid for students who receive free and reduced meals.

PGCPS currently has formal agreements, Memorandum of Understandings, with Prince George's Community College and Bowie State University. As part of the agreement, the list of courses that receive both high school and college credit have been identified. Additionally, the college shares student grades directly with PGCPS. If students are participating in Dual Enrollment at an institution where PGCPS does not have a formal agreement, grades must be submitted to the Department of College and Career Readiness and Innovative Programs, to be added to the high school transcript.

PGCPS students must meet the following criteria to participate in the Dual Enrollment Program:

• Be currently enrolled in a Prince George’s County Public Schools (Private and Homeschool students are not eligible for this particular program but may be eligible for Concurrent Enrollment Programs)
• Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
• Be enrolled in 11th or 12th grade (this includes the summer before a student’s junior year)
• Meet college requirements on college admissions tests – SAT, ACT, Accuplacer (Minimum admissions requirements may vary at each college)
• Provide own transportation to and from the college campus

Please note: Seniors are not able to earn dual credit for courses taken during the spring semester of their senior year.

About the Accuplacer:

High school juniors and seniors, with a 2.5 minimum GPA, have an opportunity to take the Accuplacer test, at their high school, free of charge during the school year. The Accuplacer is a college placement exam that is administered online. Students are only permitted to take the exam once a year during a testing window a year. Sample Accuplacer test questions and a study guide app are located at http://bit.ly/1St1PD7. Students who have previously taken the exam, and are satisfied with their scores, are not required to retake it.
