VPA Vocal Music & Piano
What are we looking for?
Passion – A student must have a desire for singing and an eagerness to learn the technical aspects of the art form. Students must be willing to adapt to a scientific and holistic (healthy vocal technique) approach to singing. Students must have a willingness to learn to sing in multiple languages and various genres.
Vocal Potential – Students must have a clear ability to match pitch (good intonation and tonal memory), a good sense of rhythm, and a suitable vocal range.
Performance Potential – Students must have a willingness to explore all possibilities of the art form through expression, taking chances, and vulnerability.
A Cooperative Attitude – Students must be able to work well with others in and outside of class. Students must be a dedicated student who practices and strives for excellence.
Endurance – Students must have the stamina to successfully manage the longer school day, which is 9+ hrs in addition to daily homework, daily practice, and performances.
What to bring and how to prepare
Practice the audition repertoire below.
The repertoire must be memorized.
Students who opt for a face-to-face audition must bring 2 copies of their repertoire.
Students who opt for the virtual audition must upload a copy of their repertoire.
How to have a successful audition
Present yourself in the best manner possible by:
Dressing appropriately – look like a professional (business casual).
Stating your name and your school clearly and answer all questions thoroughly.
Preparing your repertoire well and sing/play with confidence.
Being ready to talk about yourself, your past musical experiences, and your goals for the future. Give these ideas some thought.

1. Students will prepare to sing "The Star Spangled Banner"
The alternative is the " And This Shall be for Music " This selection will be
unaccompanied.
2. Students will prepare to sing a song of their choice. The links below are choices that students may elect to sing.
3. Students will be required to sight-read a short rhythmic and melodic sample.

Piano Auditions
The links below will help students prepare for the audition.
1. Students will play a piano solo of their choosing.
2. Students will play the scale associated with the key of that selection.
3. Students will be asked to play additional scales up to 1 sharp and 1 flat.
4. Students will be required to sight-read a short composition.
