About the
Northern Dance Invitational
The Northern Dance Invitational is a vibrant annual dance showcase, now celebrating its 3rd year. It was proudly founded by Dance Director and Faculty Bayardo Martinez (Mr. B) of The Jim Henson Academy of Visual and Performing Arts at Northwestern High School.
Mr. B's vision was inspired by the PGCPS County Dance Showcase, aiming to provide more performance opportunities for dance programs within the northern region of Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS). This invitational serves a crucial role in permitting schools to prepare for the rigorous county dance assessment held in March, which demands high professional dance experiences and expectations.
Beyond preparation, this platform offers a unique opportunity for students from numerous programs to observe and be observed, creating a crucial pathway for those seeking to apply for the prestigious middle and high schools specialty dance programs: Creative and Performing Arts (CPA) or Visual and Performing Arts (VPA). The performances provide valuable insight into the high professional standards and diverse techniques cultivated within these elite programs.
Tonight, we mark a significant milestone in our growth by welcoming pioneering guest schools from the southern region of PGCPS to the stage! Our ultimate hope is to extend this special invitational to all PGCPS schools next school year, fostering a county-wide celebration of student dance talent.
