AEROSPACE SCIENCE I
A student entering Aerospace Science for the first time must start with this course. Cadets that complete a similar program at an Army, Naval, or Marine JROTC program may enroll in the next level of Aerospace Science. Subjects include three units: The Heritage of Flight, followed by the Development of Air Power, and ending with a unit titled Toward Military Aerospace. The Leadership Education portion of this course concentrates on learning basic and military drill with a strong emphasis on developing personal values.
AEROSPACE SCIENCE II
As a practical program in the application of aerospace science, this course begins with a study of aviation weather and then covers our solar system. The second quarter concentrates on the principles of aircraft flight, aviation physiology, and principles of flight. The course parallels a basic level aviation ground school program required by general aviation pilots to obtain a private pilot's license. The Leadership part of this course concentrates on transitioning from a study of followership to that of leadership.
CADET OFFICER TRAINING PROGRAM (COLP)
A seven day summer leadership program conducted during mid-June at the County's Outdoor Environmental Education Center (Camp Schmidt) offered to all returning AS-3 cadets. This program is designed to prepare new third-year cadets with the knowledge, experience, and ability to perform effectively as cadet officers. Completion of COLP is recommended for enrollment into AS-3 level. Also, completion is required if one desires to become a cadet officer within the MD-11 Cadet Wing.
AEROSPACE SCIENCE III
The first semester concentrates on the topic of career development with the second quarter spent on a study of space efforts and accomplishments. The second semester is occupied by a practical course on mastering the skills necessary for surviving in a natural environment. The final examination consists of three-day survival experience at an Army installation in Virginia. Leadership education concentrates on perfecting the leadership skills as a junior cadet officer. A school based COLP is offered during the first quarter a make-up. Selected cadets serve as Training Instructors at leadership camps/courses.
AEROSPACE SCIENCE IV
This course begins with cadets developing a comprehensive career plan and a complete resume. Leadership education emphasizes leading and managing the Cadet Wing as a senior line or staff officer. It is followed by two quarters of aviation science (Honors Ground School), which accumulates with cadets having the opportunity to participate in aerial flight. The final quarter develops a foundation of world geography. Selected cadets serve as Training Instructors at leadership camps/courses.
AEROSPACE SCIENCE V
The Aviation Honors Ground School Program is the federal aviation administration (FAA) approved ground school course for those students pursuing a Private Pilots License. The material covered is an advanced, more in depth study of previous aerospace topics. This course is the foundation for students interested in receiving a private pilot’s license. When the course is completed the students should be prepared to take and pass the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) written examination (70% minimum passing score).
AEROSPACE SCIENCE IV
This course is the AS-4 course with instrument navigation topics included. This is for cadets who have successfully completed AS-5.
