SGA Meet & Greet with Delegate Marvin Holmes Jr.
Students got a chance to meet and talk to Marvin Holmes. They asked great questions, such as: "What bill have you helped passed". He was able to explain his Residential Owners in Common Ownership Communities - Bill of Rights in MD that forces landlords to put aside money for improvements for Condos/Townhomes so the structures will remain in tact to prevent injury and deaths of the tenants.
They were also given roses and donuts, courtesy of MD Delegate Office.
April's SGA Impact For Service Hour(s) Opportunity:
8th Grade SGA partnered with Ayuda to create Welcome Home Bags. Students were able to donate cleaning items for service hours.

In an effort to boost school & holiday spirit, JMMS SGA would like to present "JMMS Deck the Halls 2024".
From Dec 3, 2024 through December 20th, 2024 James Madison Middle School will be Decking the Halls!
During this time, our halls will be filled with holiday decorations and cheer. The school's theme is "Winter Wonderland".
The students in each grade level will come up with one theme for their grade level on Tuesday 11/26/2024. Each department gets to choose their own coinciding holiday theme.

JAMES MADISON STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION
JMMS SGA students assist in creating a positive and healthy school culture with events that include everyone. You will be a liaison between students, staff, and the community. You will get to practice representative democracy by representing the views of students in decision-making for Jame Madison Middle School.
General Purpose of the Student Government Association (SGA)
As the elected representative of the Student Body, Student Government Association shall:
Promote a greater degree of unity, respect, spirit, and cooperation among students, faculty, staff and administration.
Offer and oversee activities for furthering the academic, social, and spiritual growth of the student body.
Provide a democratic and representative forum through which students may address school related issues affecting the student body.
Represent to the faculty and administration the concerns of the student body regarding academic and disciplinary policies.
Consult with appropriate policy-making administrators regarding school policies and guidelines.
The specific delegated responsibilities of the SGA shall be to:
Serve as the official representative of the student body to the faculty and administration.
Act as consultants to the faculty and administration concerning all matters of student life.
Promote school spirit and unity by sponsoring a variety of social events.
Work in conjunction with the Assistant Principal of Student Affairs concerning all matters of club budgets, events, and the establishment of an activities calendar for each academic year.
The Class Officers shall:
Work closely with their class committee and moderator to organize and oversee class-specific activities and meetings.
Inform the Student Government Association of all class activities.
Present the opinions and ideas of their class to the SGA.
Inform their class of the decisions of the SGA.
Serve as chairperson of possible Class Committee Meetings.
JMMS SGA ELECTIONS
APPLICATION AND AGREEMENT FOR JMMS SGA OFFICE
The Student Government Association (SGA) will be holding elections for the 5 separate positions, the offices of
President: (School Wide Election)
Must be an 8th Grade Scholar at JMMS
No Suspensions of any kind
Minimum GPA 3.0
Must not be on the chronic absentee list
Completed Application/Agreement to run for Office
Vice President/Treasurer/Secretary/Historian: (School Wide Election)
Must be an 7th or 8th Grade Scholar at JMMS
No Suspensions of any kind
Minimum GPA 3.0

These are 4 separate positions.
Class Representatives (Homeroom Elections) (CHOSEN AS OF 11/1)
Can be an 6th,7th or 8th Grade Scholar at JMMS
No Suspensions of any kind
Minimum GPA 2.5

There will be held in-house (homeroom) elections for Class Representatives. All 30 homerooms will elect one representative and one alternate.
Roles and Responsibilities
President: The SGA president will lead all of the meetings; give assistance, guidance, and ppraiseraise. Furthermore, this scholar will serve as a facilitator during discussions. The president will meet and maintain frequent contact with staff and administration and attend meetings with the advisors to discuss SGA initiatives and programs. The president will also attend and participate in all SGA sponsored programs and events. The President will be elected by the student body and must be an 8th Grader.
Vice President: The SGA vice president will work closely with the president and assume duties of the president when necessary. The vice president will work with the president to prepare meeting agendas and will also meet with advisors to plan and discuss SGA meetings. The vice president is expected to attend all meetings and be an active participant in all SGA programs and initiatives. The Vice President will be elected by the student body, must be a Seventh Grader.
Treasurer: The treasurer prepares and maintains all documentation related to SGA’s budget and spending.
Secretary: The SGA secretary will keep an account of the minutes of every meeting. Moreover, they will be in charge of attendance and maintain student council files. The secretary will keep all financial expenses and provide financial advice to the SGA. The Secretary will be elected by the student body and open to both 7th and 8th grade.
Historian: The Historian collects information including—but not limited to—membership rosters, contact information, meeting agendas, meeting minutes, event information, and physical records of events
Grade Level Class Representatives: This position is open for anyone to run for. Each homeroom will be responsible for selecting their class representative. The major role of this position is for the Representatives for each class to get their class involved with the SGA and to have a voice. This person will help with programming such as promoting spirit days, and informing them of important events, etc. The class representative will represent their homeroom class in SGA, will serve on SGA committees, and be a member of their house SGA committee. Each homeroom will be responsible for selecting their representative.
Students wishing to run for office must abide by the following rules:
All deadlines must be met or the student will not be permitted to continue the pursuit of the office.
The student must be a positive role model for other students. A referral may result in a student not being permitted to continue the pursuit of the office.
The student must have an overall “B” average from the previous school year and maintain it this year (Except for Class Representatives).
The student must present a recorded campaign speech for the student body to be viewed in classes.
Before making your video speech, you must submit thethe speech in written form to Ms Edwards at yulonda.edwards@pgcps.org for approval. Once approved by Mrs. Edwards, you must create your video speech and upload it to a folder created by Mrs. Edwards (sent to chosen students). Written Speeches must be typed, double spaced, Times New Roman Font 14, and no longer than two minutes for all candidates regardless of office.
Only eighth graders may run for the offices of president and vice president.
Sixth, seventh and eighth graders may run for the offices of secretary and treasurer.
Officers will be required to stay after school one Tuesday of some months from 4:30-5:30pm. Students should not run for office unless they and their parents are prepared to make this commitment and parents can make arrangements for transportation home for their child at 5:30 p.m.
Students may not run as a team.
Students running for an office are limited to one campaign poster which must be approved by the SGA sponsor or admin. The sponsor will place all posters in a gallery walk where the other students will have the opportunity to view all posters.
Students running for office are not permitted to distribute any materials while campaigning. This includes items such as candy, flyers, t-shirts, pencils, etc.
Failure to comply with any of the above rules will be a reason for disqualification.
The Application for Office is available Monday, November 4th through Friday, November 8th and must be submitted to Mrs. Edwards no later than Monday, November 11th by 4 p.m.
Written Speeches and one poster are due no later than Monday, November 18th by 4p.m. Video Speeches must be uploaded to the One Drive folder by Wednesday, November 20th .
Failure to meet one or both of these deadlines disqualifies a student from running for office.
Campaign speeches will be available for students to view on November 25th
Primary elections will be conducted during homeroom on November 26th
Winners will be announced when we return from
Thanksgiving Break on Dec 2!

Campaign Materials
1. Etiquette and common courtesy are required in campaign material (printed and verbal promotions).
2. All promotional material must be printed at the expense of candidate, not by campus offices, clubs or organizations, regardless of organization or advisor approval. No organizational endorsements allowed.
3. The following may not be used or portrayed in promotional materials: Vulgar gestures and/or profanity and/or use of alcohol/drug and/or any other non -acceptable materials.
4. Posters/publicity must be approved by Admin & Ms Edwards before it is posted. Approval must be on all campaign publicity. This includes ALL publicity whether paper or electronic media. Failure to comply with this will result in removal from the ballot.
5. Publicity can only be posted in the following areas of campus: - Any approved campus gallery walk (1 per board) Check with Ms. Edwards for location.
6. Publicity may not be posted on doors, walls, or windows outside of classrooms.
7. Publicity must be no larger than a poster board/poster size.
8. Publicity should be removable and posted with either tacks, staples or masking tape rolled and placed on the back
9. If candidates are found tampering with publicity belonging to another candidate, he or she will be disqualified.
10. Materials must be taken down/removed immediately following the election. End of day Nov 26th.
