AP Spanish 5

Description & Goal

AP Spanish 5 is a rigorous course that challenges students to not only expand their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in Spanish, but also challenge their understanding of Spanish-Speaking history, culture, society, and politics. The course objective is to increase Spanish oral and written proficiency (Intermediate high/advance low) and intercultural competence through an engaging, context-rich, and relevant curriculum.

Organization

The course is divided into thematic units which are further based on recommended contexts and guided by essential questions. Corresponding cultural elements are integrated into the study of the units, and activities are directed with those cultural connections in mind. Discussion of the topics completely in Spanish is a requirement for this course. It is assumed that students have previously been exposed to advanced language structures in the courses leading up to the AP Spanish Language and Culture course; however, review of the mechanics is done within the contextual framework of each unit as needed.

Through the development of receptive, productive and interactive skills, students should be able to respond and interact appropriately in a defined range of everyday situations.

The main focus of the course is on language acquisition and development of language skills. These language skills should be developed through the study and use of a range of written and spoken material. Such material will extend from everyday oral exchanges to literary texts, and should be related to the culture(s) concerned. The material should be chosen to enable students to develop mastery of language skills and intercultural understanding. It should not be intended solely for the study of specific subject matter or content.
